Introduction
Who can benefit?
“In other parts of the world, most women begin their recovery from the 5th day after
childbirth. In the U.S., women don’t even begin to think about recovery until after their six
week post-delivery check-up. There is a huge ’healing window of opportunity’ being
missed by American women, which results in a weak and prolonged recovery period of a
year or more. Women do not have to and should not wait this long.”
Valerie Lynn, Author of The Mommy Plan
Course This intensive 1-day workshop presents traditional after-birth practices and guidelines
like never before – using nutritional science, anatomy and medical science. Why have
they been around for so long and how do they work? You’ll find out about recovery
options and alternatives that you never knew existed.
Traditional holistic healing practices are making a strong comeback. Why? Because the
proof is in the effectiveness of the healing. Learn how managing post-maternity diet,
activities and personal care before the six-week medical exam can support and accelerate
the body’s healing process.

Post-Pregnancy Wellness This body of knowledge regarding how the rest of the world views post-pregnancy
wellness may be new to women in the United States. However, three billion people on
the planet follow a well-structured set of post-pregnancy recovery guidelines in stark
contrast to those that are typical in America.
The “Healing Window of Opportunity” The #1 complication from childbirth is Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders; which are
statistically grouped together under postpartum depression or PPD. The rate of
postpartum depression is 25% in the U.S. which means that with an average of 4 million
births per year roughly, 1 million NEW cases are diagnosed annually. Much of the
prevalence of PPD is due to the fact that most American women begin their recovery after
the six week doctor’s post-delivery exam. However, there exists a six to eight week
“healing window of opportunity” that women must take advantage of as the body
transitions back to a non-pregnant state.
The first 6–8 weeks sets the foundation for the next 3–4 months of healing.

The Malaysian Example Ms. Lynn has conducted original research on holistic post-pregnancy recovery practices
that are traditional in other parts of the world. Much of the research is from Malaysia,
where she spent four years gathering information, as nothing was written down or in
English. In that country, the government has incorporated postnatal body therapy and
treatments into its national policy on maternal health care. Each mother is afforded the
opportunity of six two-hour treatments within six weeks of delivery. These, in
combination with diet, activity, and personal care guidelines, all contribute to a very
strong post-pregnancy recovery, much more so than American women experience. As a
result of her research and experience, in Malaysia, Ms. Lynn is a zealous advocate for
preventive measures which women can take to reduce the chances of suffering from
postpartum depression, beyond the “baby blues”, which is a relatively normal and
transient condition.

What We Don’t Know
What many women don’t realize is that the body begins its healing process within 1-2
hours after the placenta is birthed. Women in other cultures of the world seem to
understand this, and they begin managing their recovery from day 5 after delivery.
American women begin on about day 42, following their six-week checkup. American
moms have generally not known of any other alternatives.

The Mommy Plan
Restoring Your Post-Pregnancy Body,
Naturally Using Women’s Traditional Wisdom
Foreword by Ibu Robin Lim, CNN Hero of the Year, 2011-2012
“It is time to care for ALL new mothers, and The Mommy Plan is an important
key to having the knowledge “toolbox” ready to help.”
Ibu Robin Lim, Global Birth Advocate, CNN Hero of the Year 2012
WENDY DAVID, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, POSTPARTUM SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL (PSI)
“The Mommy Plan by Valerie Lynn is a wonderfully nurturing and informative resource for
women and their caregivers. Creating a bridge between the worlds of traditional wisdom
and modern research, Valerie Lynn writes in a way that is expert, loving, and familiar.
From start to finish, this lovely collection of expert guidance and time-tested wisdom is
warm and practical. I felt informed and comforted by this treasure from the start – even
as I opened the book and read that it is sealed with a non-toxic layer so that new parents
who are fortunate enough to pick it up are free from chemical exposure.

The Mommy Plan is a completely manageable sized book, and yet it seems to cover just
what we need to know of both the traditional methods and modern examples of a truly
healthy and holistic care plan for pregnant, postpartum, and post pregnancy-loss women.
With this holistic and traditional approach, the book covers both emotional and physical
wellbeing. It has become all too rare to find resources for childbearing families that cover
both emotional and physical health. After reading The Mommy Plan, I realized that is the
very message and gift of this book: there should be no separation of emotional and
physical wellness, and new parents suffer from a modern world in which we have
forgotten how to take care of the whole person, the whole mama. Thank you, Valerie, for
illustrating this in such an inviting and informed way in The Mommy Plan.”
Flow of course
The course will be based on information contained in The Mommy Plan plus the Malay
traditional methods of after-birth body care, which is a holistic sequence of post-baby
treatment, including body and hot stone abdominal massage, Yoni sauna (vagina steams),
modern tummy wraps, body scrubs and herbal mixtures.
