2002 SEC Championship

39

Three seasons ago, the Tigers accomplished some-

thing previously not done since 1981. They captured a

SEC Championship, the first under the helm of Coach

Mike Griffin. Prior to that Championship year, Griffin led

the Tigers to 13 top-five finishes and six conference run-

ner-ups.

"This was my first SEC title since I arrived at Auburn

so that makes it even more special," Griffin said.

No. 12 Auburn took an 11-shot lead into the final

round of play at Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course in

St. Simons Island, Ga. Fourth-ranked Florida cut the lead

to four strokes, but Auburn held on and eventually won

by a commanding seven-shot margin. Three Tigers fin-

ished in the top 10 with junior Jay Mundy finishing third

at 70-67-75--212.

The Billy

Hitchcock Inter-

collegiate golf

tournament has

become as much

of a part of Au-

burn tradition as going to Tiger Walk or sipping on some

Toomers lemonade. Over the past 17 years, Auburn has

played host to one of the premier tournaments on the

collegiate level.

Known for its excitement and friendly atmosphere,

the top teams in the nation come down every April to

enjoy Southern hospitality and a few rounds of golf.

However, we think some just come to eat the barbecue

dinner which is served after the first round. Whatever

the reason is, the competition gets tougher with each

passing year. The tournament is a three-day, 54-hole

event, which culminates in an award ceremony held after

the final round.

One of the main reasons why the Hitchcock is so

important is that it gives SEC teams one last chance to

prepare for the SEC Championship. For NCAA District

III teams, it is an opportunity to snag one of the eight

spots at the NCAA East Regional Championship.

Griffin’s dream of developing and hosting a tourna-

ment came true, when on April 29, 1988, the first tee-shot

was hit in the inaugural Hitchcock Intercollegiate.

“It was important for us to have a home tournament

for the home crowd because, unlike other teams, colle-

giate golf teams do not have the opportunity to play half

of their events at home,” Griffin said. “Since we only

have one opportunity, we wanted to make that one op-

portunity a good one through hospitality. The Hitchcock

committee, our golf hostesses and our sponsors have

given us the needed support to conduct a truly first-

class event.”

When it came time to pick a name for the tourna-

ment, there could be no better namesake than Billy

Hitchcock. Hitchcock attended Auburn from 1935-1938

and excelled in both football and baseball.

As a halfback for the football team, Hitchcock scored

Auburn’s first-ever bowl points, when he ran for a 40-

yard touchdown against Villanova in the Bacardi Bowl

in Havana, Cuba, the only bowl game in history to be

played out of the country.

It would be through baseball that Hitchcock would

claim his way to fame. After graduating in 1938, he was

drafted by the New York Yankees. In 1942, Hitchcock

fulfilled his obligation to his country, and enlisted in the

U.S. Armed Forces in WWII. Following the war, Hitchcock

played baseball until 1953. However, his association with

baseball would not end for another 27 years.

Hitchcock entered the sport on the teaching side

after his playing days. His level of coaching would esca-

late all the way to becoming manager for the Baltimore

Orioles and the Atlanta Braves.

In 1971, Hitchcock moved from the dugout to the

front office, serving as president of the Southern League

until his retirement in 1980.

Since play began in 1988, the Tigers have captured

nine overall titles (8 of the last 10) and four individual

titles. Individual winners were Jim Curran ('88), Jay

Hobby ('96), Jason Dufner ('97) and Kevin Haefner ('02).

Aloha Auburn

Almost every year the Auburn

men’s golf team takes a trip to Hawaii.

While they go to play golf, they also

go to enjoy some fun in the sun on the

beach. The Tigers have traveled to

Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, 12 times

over the years. They participate in the

John A. Burns Intercollegiate Golf Clas-

sic at the beautiful Leilehua Golf

Course. The tournament usually fea-

tures 18 or more teams from around the

country. The Tigers have won the tour-

nament once, in 1996, and have placed

second three times.
