I recently filmed the Century Batteries Beach and Boat fishingcompetition based at Marsden Cove, south of Whangarei.

The greater percentage of anglers were at Marsden Cove forfun and the possibility of stumbling over a big prize winningfish but several teams had a different focus, they were thereto win!

Our first responsibility was to go out and catch a snappersuitable for tagging. Once released and if caught during thecompetition the fish would return to the successful angler$100,000.

I must say that I felt a bit of pressure. A few hours representedall of the time available to us and success was not exactlyguaranteed.

The trick when the pressure is on is to throw in a variety ofangling options and in our case two rods loaded with flasherrigs and two anglers utilising soft baits.

We consistently get our biggest fish on soft baits so with theassistance of a drogue or sea anchor we set off on a lengthydrift and in reasonable time had a three kilo snapper taggedand safely returned to the water.

The consensus was to catch enoughfor a feed and this was done with thesoft baits out fishing conventionalpilchards and squid two to one.Although we experimented witha variety of colours, the nuclearchicken five inch jerk shad did thedamage.

Some of the serious competitionanglers were using burley days inadvance in the hope of enticing abig snapper to their patch whileothers with good local knowledge

relied on live or fresh dead baits. Others told me they nowuse nothing but soft baits but the biggest snapper this yearwas caught on conventional bait.

When it comes to targeting huge snapper my preferredapproach is burley and live baits usually yellow tail.Sometimes I will take a fresh live bait and butterfly it. Inthis case you take most of the fillet on both sides off thebackbone but leave the head attached. In other words youwind up with the head attached to two big fleshy flaps andusing a double hook rig insert one hook through the bottomjaw and out the top and the second hook back where thebelly would be, fresh, succulent and irresistible.

If I have one of these in the water at change of light, earlymorning and late afternoon, plus a live bait and nothinghappens when the sun hits the horizon then I will throw ina soft bait sometimes with devastating effect, even though Iam at anchor and burleying up.

Whether you are fishing for the big tournament winning fishor just out to land a good feed early morning and late eveningare clearly great times to hunt.
