    WTO is driven by its member states, itcould not function without its Secretariat

    to coordinate the activities. The

    Secretariat employs over 600 staff, andits experts lawyers, economists,

    statisticians and communications experts

    assist WTO members on a daily basis

    European Union

    The European Union (EU) is an economicand political union of 28 member states thatare located primarily in Europe. The EUoperates through a system of supranationalindependent institutions

    and intergovernmental negotiated decisionsby the member states. Institutions of the EUinclude the European Commission,the Council of the European Union,the European Council, the Court of Justice ofthe European Union, the European CentralBank, the Court of Auditors, andthe European Parliament.     The Federation of Indian ExportOrganisations represents the Indianentrepreneurs spirit of enterprise in theglobal market. Known popularly as

    "FIEO", this apex body of Indian exportpromotion organizations was set upjointly by the Ministry of Commerce,Government of India and private tradeand industry in the year 1965. FIEO isthus a partner of the Government ofIndia in promoting India's exports

    COMMERCE The basic role of the Department is to

    facilitate the creation of an enablingenvironment and infrastructure foraccelerated growth of international trade. The

    Department formulates, implements andmonitors the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP)which provides the basic framework of policyand strategy to be followed for promotingexports and trade. The Trade Policy isperiodically reviewed to incorporate changesnecessary to take care of emerging economicscenarios both in the domestic andinternational economy.

    DGFT

    The Directorate General of foreign Trade(DGFT) is the agency of the Ministry ofCommerce and Industry of the Governmentof India, responsible for execution of theimport and export Policies of India. It was

    earlier known as Chief Controller of Imports &Exports (CCI&E) till 1991. DGFT plays a veryimportant role in the development of tradingrelations with various other nations and thushelp in improving not only the economicgrowth but also provides a certain impetusneeded in the trade industry. For promotingexports and imports DGFT establish itsregional offices across the country.

    The chequered history of evolution,developments, transformations and coming ofage of the DIRECTORATE GENERAL OFCOMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE ANDSTATISTICS has been a mammoth exercise

    spread over a span of one hundred and fortyyears and carried out under the stewardshipof capable and pragmatic visionaries. TheOrganization traces its origin to a statisticalbranch established in the FinanceDepartment of the Government of India wayback in 1862. Sir William W. Hunter was thefirst DG of the DGCI & S or the DirectorGeneral of Statistics as he was designated,back in 1871.

    EXPORT PROMOTION

    COUNCILS The basic objective of Export Promotion Councils

    is to promote and develop the exports of thecountry. Each Council is responsible for thepromotion of a particular group of products,projects and services. he main role of the EPCs

    is to project India's image abroad as a reliablesupplier of high quality goods and services. Inparticular, the EPCs shall encourage and monitorthe observance of international standards andspecifications by exporters. The EPCs shall keep

    abreast of the trends and opportunities ininternational markets for goods and services andassist their members in taking advantage of suchopportunities in order to expand and diversifyexports.
