• Senior Embassy officials provided a briefing on the bilateral trade relationship between Australia and Japan and prospects for Queensland agriculture in beef, horticulture, aquaculture and value-added food and beverages.

• Minister Furner acknowledged Japan's prominence as a significant trading partner for Queensland and a source of foreign direct investment. In 2017-18, two-way trade between Queensland and Japan totalled almost $16.5 billion.

• This site visit provided an opportunity to meet with Mr Knappick, exporter of a new Queensland/New South Wales macadamia product, Harvest Macadamias, and his Japanese importer, IOT Co Limited.

• Increasingly busy lifestyles in Japan have led to demand for high quality, healthy snack products such as macadamia nuts. In 2016-17, Queensland's macadamia nut exports to Japan totalled approximately $10.4 million.

• Japanese imports of FNC's Harvest Macadamias began in June 2018, following a business matching exercise of IOT Co Limited and FNC Plantations, by TIQ Japan. The product is positioned at the premium end of the market and retails for approximately AUD$1 per nut. It has been well received by consumers and is currently sold in more than 200 stores across Japan.

• Minister Furner hosted the Iron Chef Queensland Beef Lunch on behalf of the Palaszczuk Government, in partnership with Meat and Livestock Australia. The lunch was held at Iron Chef, Hiroyuki Sakai's restaurant, La Rochelle.

• The event celebrated the strong trade and investment partnerships in the beef industry between Queensland and Japan, the State's most important beef customer by volume and value. It was attended by 35 guests, many of whom have existing relationships with Queensland beef businesses including JBS, Teys Australia, Australian Country Choice and Stockyard.

• Chef Sakai's expertly prepared meal profiled premium Queensland eye fillet, broccoli, watermelon-radish, beetroot, honey, vanilla and macadamia nuts. Chef Sakai is an honorary TAFE Queensland Culinary Ambassador to Japan.

• Minister Furner delivered a 10 minute address in which he spoke of the Palaszczuk Government's commitment to assist Queensland beef producers, processors, feedlotters and their supply chain partners capitalise on opportunities to expand beef exports to Japan and increase innovation and investment across beef supply chains.

• The event also provided an opportunity to promote and distribute the new Investor's Guide to the Beef Supply Chain developed by the Palaszczuk Government. The guide is printed in Japanese and was well received by lunch guests.

• Wismettac is one of the largest importers of fruit and vegetables in Japan. Key lines imported by Wismettac include broccoli, lettuce, kaboocha squash and asparagus.

• Minister Furner communicated the high value that Queensland places on its trading relationship with Japan and highlighted Queensland's ability to meet growing demand in Japan for safe, premium quality, fresh foods.

• Queensland's counter-seasonality and clean and green image is highly regarded in Japan. The elimination of most vegetable tariffs under the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA) has also resulted in significant benefits for Queensland exporters.

• The meeting involved a productive discussion about the MoC and an update on the collaborative horticulture research trial being undertaken at DAF's Ayr Facility. The Vice-Minister expressed strong interest in working with DAF to trial additional crops.

• Minister Furner presented a copy of the Queensland agriculture snapshot 2018 and reinforced the competitive advantages offered by Queensland as an investment destination. The Vice-Minister was interested to receive an update on the Queensland drought and its likely impact on wheat exports to Japan.

• An invitation was extended to the Vice-Minister to visit North Queensland in 2019 to attend the launch of a Retractable Roofing System (RRG). The system is central to the MAFF-DAF collaborative horticulture research project at the Ayr Research Facility.

• The Vice-Minister informed Minister Furner about an October 2018 wagyu beef promotion to be held in Brisbane by the Japanese Consul-General.

• The visit provided an opportunity to acknowledge the strong and productive ties that Union is developing with Queensland vegetable growers.

• The variety of Queensland vegetable exports to Japan continues to grow each year, as a direct result of business matching between Queensland growers and Union, by Trade and Investment Queensland Japan. In 2017-18 (preliminary), Queensland vegetable exports to Japan were valued at almost AUD$2.3 million.

• Minister Furner provided an update on white spot prawn disease in South East Queensland and reassured Nissui that the virus has not been detected in North Queensland, where Seafarms operates.

• OneHarvest is based in Queensland and produces a variety of salad bags, kits and bowls, value-added vegetables and deli salads. Love Beets are vacuum packed and 100 per cent all natural, Australian grown beetroot.

• Minister Furner introduced Queensland companies, Bundaberg Brewed Drinks and MorCo Fresh to Costco officials, and promoted Queensland's capacity to supply Korean consumers with high-end food and beverages, convenience foods and fresh fruit and vegetables.

• The meeting provided a valuable opportunity for Bundaberg Brewed Drinks and MorCo Fresh to discuss their product offerings with Costco representatives and understand emerging opportunities in the Korean market.

• Costco Japan also stocks Grove Juice, one of the largest Australian owned fresh fruit processors in the juice sector. The company's head office is located in Brisbane.

• Costco was founded in 1983 and is headquartered in the United States of America. It operates 26 warehouses in Japan, with plans to expand the number of outlets to fifty by 2022.

• Officials from the Australian Embassy and Austrade in Seoul provided a briefing on current market intelligence and prospects for Queensland agriculture in Korea, Queensland's third largest trading partner.

• The meeting included discussion on trade policy issues in beef, horticulture and value-added foods and opportunities arising from the Korea-Australia Free Trade Agreement, which entered into force in December 2014.

• Beef is Queensland's most significant export to Korea, valued at $831.5 million in 2017-18. Australian beef holds a fifty per cent share of the Korean market and is highly regarded, based on its 'clean and green' image. Korea is also a major customer of Queensland malt, cereal grains and sugar and there is growing demand for Queensland fruit, vegetables and premium beverages.

• Austrade officials expressed an interest in pursuing agritech opportunities with Queensland, and informed the official party of a planned 2019 Austrade-led trade mission to Korea.

• Mr Ha provided an overview of Song-young-shin Smart Farm, which was established in 2011. The dairy farm is known for its automated milking system and feeder control, among other smart farm aspects.

• Minister Furner acknowledged Stethee Vet's innovative design and use of smart technology to aid in the prompt diagnosis of animal health and well-being. The product will be launched in Korea shortly.

• The purpose of this meeting was to acknowledge Queensland's 21-year sister-state partnership with Gyeonggi Province and strengthen ties with senior government executives from the province.

• The visit follows a meeting between the Honourable Jackie Trad MP, Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships with the Vice Governor of Gyeonggi Provincial Government. The meeting occurred during the Deputy Premier's May 2016 trade mission to South Korea.

• Officials from the Agricultural and Maritime Administration Bureau provided an informative overview of their Agricultural Research and Extension Services project and expressed a strong interest in greater cooperation between Queensland and Gyeonggi Province.

• Minister Furner welcomed the opportunity for collaboration and promoted Queensland's expertise in agriculture and food research, development and extension, including the work of the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI).

• The Queensland-Gyeonggi Sisterhood Agreement was signed in 1997 to promote economic and cultural cooperation and exchange. The Agreement has been renewed a number of times, most recently in September 2017. The latest renewal resulted in agreement on a three-year action plan to encourage collaboration in new areas including food technology, functional foods, biotechnology, health, autonomous vehicles and vocational education and training.

• Minister Furner welcomed ongoing engagement with Gyeonggi Province and invited them to consider a visit to Queensland.

• Minister Furner noted that the Queensland beef industry is able to meet the specific needs of a diverse range of customers, and highlighted Queensland as a safe and clean source of agricultural produce.

• Queensland's commitment to strengthening the relationship with Lotte International and developing new areas for business cooperation was also reinforced.

Meeting Summary:

• The purpose of the meeting was to witness the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between SNU-CALS and QAAFI and a MOU between SNU-CALS and Bio and Gene.

• The MOUs provide a framework for collaboration in the development of biomaterial from animals and active ingredients from Australian native plants to produce high value-added products for the biomedical, pharmaceutical and functional food industries.

• CALS is a leading Korean institution specialising in agricultural education and research. The College is part of the Seoul National University. It aims to be at the forefront of global agricultural research and has participated in international exchanges with 43 foreign renowned universities and institutions.

• Minister Furner took the opportunity to promote QAAFI, which is the flagship alliance between the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) and the University of Queensland.
