HEADER

The lean bar at the front of the header must be positioned low enough to set up the crop for a butt-first travel through the machine. An adjustable guard angle allows for a 0° flat angle, a 4° angle, or an 8° steep guard angle. Adjustable skid shoes help match the header to crop conditions. Flotation springs make positioning the header easier and give the header floating control of the cutting area. After the crop has been conveyed through the header, it is shaped and fluffed into windrows by the forming shields.

SICKLE DRIVE SYSTEM

The sickle drive is driven by a power band belt which originates off the gearbox on the main drive shaft.

DESCRIPTION

The belt runs on a flywheel sheave having a connected pitman stick which converts the rotary motion into the oscillating action which drives the sickle. The pitman stick is attached to a bellcrank assembly by a U-joint, and the purpose of the bell crank is to make a right angle turn with the oscillating motion, driving the sickle horizontally. A sickle stroke of 3-1 /l6-inch is attained at a speed of 1600 strokes per minute.

Hesston guards have a hardened ledger area and heel that insures true alignment of the sickle section with the ledger surface. The sections and ledgers are selfsharpening. Tie guards are used s.ince their bending or breakage is reduced by Hesston's addition of tie plates.

8. Place largest bearing cone in place and press in new grease seal with lip pointing towards bearing.

9. Clean axle and install hub.

10. Install smaller bearing cone and axle nut. Tighten nut with a wrench while rotating hub until there is a drag. This assures all bearing surfaces are in contact and not floating in grease. Back off axle nut to its nearest slot and install cotter pin.

11. Fill hub cap half full of wheel bearing grease and install in hub.

12. Install wheel, tighten wheel bolts to 85 footpounds torque and remove jack.

WINDROW FORMING SHIELDS

A high, loose, fluffy, well-ventilated windrow is most important for fast drying. Windrow width is controlled by the position of the left and right forming shields. Use the rear deflector as a stop to help control width of windrow. For most conditions, set the forming shields at mid position and rear

deflector down approximately 80°. Use a wider forming shield opening in heavy crops to avoid bunching and compressing.

LEAN BAR

Purpose of the lean bar is to push the crop forward and down so it will feed through the conditioner butt first, after being cut off by the sickle.

The lean bar should strike the crop at approximately one-third of crop height, or low enough that it holds crop down until reel tines enter. If the lean bar is set too high, the crop will stand up after the lean bar passes, permitting the reel to pull the crop across the cutterbar top first. When the crop goes through the conditioner top first, leaves are torn from the main stalk.
