Tracking & Progression Tool

Introduction

These user instructions will help you get the most from your Language Angels

Tracking & Progression Tool.

Your Language Angels Tracking & Progression Tool will enable you, your colleagues

and your school to record, analyse and interpret data for the foreign language

teaching you provide.

With this tool you can do all of the following:

View and plot the position on the Learning and Progression Timeline of a class

or individual pupil. This visually demonstrates the progress your classes are

making against the 12 teaching targets stipulated in the DfE Key Stage 2

Languages Programme of Study.

View and analyse overall class performance against each of the four key

language learning skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing)

View and analyse individual pupil performance against each of the four key

language learning skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing)

All results are given as a total score, a percentage score and a standard

achieved described by 5 performance bands (Below Expectation, Towards

Expectation, Meeting Expectation, Exceeding Expectation and Mastery.

The step-by-step instructions in this document will explain how you can produce all

of the information in the above list.

The Language Angels Tracking & Progression Tool is designed to work by recording

the progress of each of your pupils as measured by the Language Angels End Of Unit

Skills Assessments provided in Lesson 6 of each teaching unit.

As suggested by the DfE Key Stage 2 Languages Programme of Study, each pupil’s

learning and progression is assessed and measured against each of the four key

language learning skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing).

Each of these four skills is assessed by asking the pupils in your class to answer 5

questions in each of the skills - giving a possible maximum score of 20 for any unit

skills assessment. The questions are unit specific and are based on the language your

pupils have been taught in that particular unit.

Five performance bands (or level descriptors) can then be used to best describe the

performance and progression of each pupil at any given time in their language

learning journey. The performance bands also have a percentage mark equivalent

(for schools that prefer to use percentages rather than bands). The performance

bands / level descriptors we use in the Tracking & Progression Tool are:

Below Expectation (0% - 25%)

Towards Expectation (26% - 45%)

Meeting Expectation (46% - 65%)

Exceeding Expectation (66% - 85%)

Mastery (86% - 100%)

Each pupil should complete the revision lesson and then complete their End Of Unit

Skills Assessment questions (all provided in lesson 6 of each Language Angels unit).

Their scores can then be entered into the Language Angels Tracking & Progression

tool by the teacher.

The Tracking & Progression tool will then enable teachers to generate reports

showing class progression against the 12 teaching targets stipulated in the DfE Key

Stage 2 Languages Programme of Study as well as individual pupil performance in

each language learning skill. They will also be able to describe performance using the

performance bands detailed above.

Enter the score obtained for each skill tested for each pupil in the boxes. Score values must

be between 0 and 5 as there are 5 questions per skill on the assessment question sheet. You

can also enter half-marks by entering 0.5 to a pupil’s score. Examples of where we would

recommend giving half a mark would be for spelling/pronunciation that is close but not

quite correct or if an accent is missed from a word. You have the freedom to choose.

If you leave a box blank the system will assume that the pupil was not tested in that

particular skill. If a pupil did not do the test click the “absent” option.

The total and percentage scores for each pupil will be automatically calculated.

Click submit when finished.

Class Report – Learning & Progression Timeline

The Learning & Progression Timeline demonstrates the learning and progression made by

individual pupils and whole classes by recording and plotting which of each of the 12 foreign

language teaching requirements (as set out in the DfE Key Stage 2 Foreign Languages

Programme of Study) have been met.

The timeline is organised so that it lists each Language Angels unit in terms of teaching level

(Early Language, Intermediate and Progressive) to demonstrate the 'language learning

journey' your pupils take whilst in your school.

Having confirmed on the Record Completed Units & / or Pupil Assessment Scores page (see

page 12) when each Language Angels unit has been completed, you will slowly move your

respective classes from left to right along the Learning and Progression Timeline. The

timeline also indicates which of the 12 key teaching targets have been met and achieved by

teaching that particular unit. This gives you a very useful visual representation of the actual

All of this data is automatically

prepopulated by the system.

Page 17: Tracking & Progression Tool Instructions

learning and progression 'steps' your class is taking in their primary foreign language

learning journey.

From the Reports & Data page, once you select your class and language taught, you will be

redirected to the Learning & Progression Timeline for your selected class.

The Learning & Progression Timeline is a visual representation of the following:

The units your selected class has completed,

Which of the 12 DfE Key Stage 2 Languages Programme of Study teaching

requirements have been met by your class so far. These are identified by different

coloured ticks placed against each requirement in the list underneath the timeline

and calculated for all of the accumulated units you have confirmed as completed.

A visual demonstration (with the green highlighting of the completed units) how far

along their foreign language journey your class is. Our Language Angels units are

organised by learning level from our easiest Early Language units on the left to our

hardest Progressive units on the right. The more green highlighted boxes there are

moving from left to right the more progress your class is making in its foreign

language journey.

Each of the 12 DfE Key Stage 2 Languages Programme of Study attainment targets listed at

the bottom of your Learning & Progression Timeline screen will have either no tick or one of

3 coloured ticks (red, orange and green) beside it.

The different coloured ticks represent the different levels of challenge each DfE attainment

target has been met at. To be able to demonstrate progression, each pupil / class should

meet each of the 12 DfE attainment targets at 3 different levels of challenge. This will enable

you to properly and thoroughly demonstrate both learning and substantial progression

against each attainment target.

The FIRST time a unit is taught that meets one of the 12 Programme of Study attainment

targets a RED tick will appear against that attainment target at the bottom of the

timeline screen.

Page 18: Tracking & Progression Tool Instructions

Language Angels Tracking & Progression Tool Instructions     www.languageangels.com/schools

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected] or call 020 8446 5171   Page 18 of 24

The SECOND time a unit is taught that meets the same Programme of Study attainment

target that is currently a RED tick, the tick will change colour from RED to ORANGE as

long as the unit that has been completed comes from a DIFFERENT TEACHING TYPE

(different level of challenge).

Example: You complete an Early Language Teaching unit that meets Programme of Study

attainment target number 5. The tick for attainment target number five appears as a RED

tick. If you complete another Early Language Teaching unit that meets Programme of Study

attainment target number 5, the tick stays RED. As soon as you complete a unit from a

different teaching type (Eg: Intermediate Unit, Progressive Unit or Cross-Curricular Unit) that

meets Programme of Study attainment target number 5 then the tick will change colour

from RED to ORANGE.

The THIRD time a unit is taught that meets the same Programme of Study attainment target

that is currently an ORANGE tick, the tick will change colour from ORANGE to GREEN

as long as the unit that has been completed comes from a DIFFERENT TEACHING TYPE

(different level of challenge) to the types that have already been recorded.

After a Programme of Study attainment target has been met by completing 3 units from 3

different teaching types it remains GREEN. There will be no more colour changes.

Programme of Study attainment targets that have not been met at all yet will remain blank

(no tick).

You can view the Learning & Progression timeline in full screen mode by clicking the FULL

SCREEN button. When in full screen mode you can print the timeline by clicking the PRINT

button.

Any unit highlighted in green on the timeline has been confirmed as completed by that class.

Any unit that is not highlighted in green has not been completed yet.

You will notice that some of the completed green highlighted units will have a “Y” in the

Assessment Completed box and others may have an “N”.

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected] or call 020 8446 5171   Page 19 of 24

Those with a “Y” in the Assessment Completed box indicate units where individual pupil

assessment scores have been input (either fully or in part) for that unit.

Those with an “N” in the Assessment Completed box indicate units that have been confirmed

as completed by the class but where individual pupil assessment scores have not been input

for that unit.

If you wish to input pupil scores at a later date for a unit that was completed previously you

can click on the “N” and you will be redirected to the Individual Pupil Assessment Scores

Input Screen where you can enter the score obtained (see page 14).

If you click any “Y” in the Assessment Completed boxes you will be redirected to the Class

Skills Assessment Report screen (see page 20).
