TRACK & FIELD 2017 TEAM SEASON 3

Welcome

I would like to warmly welcome students, staff, parents and friends to the 2017 Track and Field season! The Waverley College Track and Field Team is the largest team in the school and is involved in one of the most exciting events in the calendar, the CAS Track and Field Championships. The commitment and dedication of the students in the Track and Field Team is unrivalled throughout the school. Our athletes are here because they are passionate, they enjoy the challenge and they have the drive to win.

As many of you know, this is my second year as Convenor of Track and Field and this year I will be working closely with Miss Stephanie Floyd in her role as Assistant Convenor. This year, we also have a very strong staff team supporting us who are keen to see the boys achieve their best results yet.

The success of Waverley College Track and Field is not only due to the efforts of the students but also the involvement of parents. I would like to encourage and welcome any parents and friends who may be interested in assisting the Supporter Group through the 2017 season.

This booklet contains information on the 2017 Track and Field season including season dates, training expectations, team events and contact information. Please ensure this booklet is kept in a prominent place at home.

I look forward to working with you throughout the season to see every competitor reach their full potential.

Waves To Win!

4 TRACK & FIELD 2017 TEAM SEASON

Student Expectations

The following students are expected to be a part of the Waverley College Track and Field Team:

• Members of the 2016 Waverley College Track and Field Squad

• Students identified (placing in the top 5) at the Waverley College House Athletics Carnival

• Students identified by Waverley College PDHPE Staff

The season is very short and only lasts five weeks, with five lead-up Invitational Carnivals to the Championships. While summer sports teams will be beginning pre-season training sessions during the athletics season, the Track and Field Team takes priority. Students in the Track and Field Team will not be disadvantaged in any way on gaining selection into summer sport teams.

Training involves 2 to 4 sessions a week, depending on how many events you enter. Training commences at 3:40pm each afternoon with the team warm up. Do not be late. Training will not be cancelled. If it does rain, listen to announcements at school regarding wet weather arrangements. Bring running spikes and sandshoes.

You are expected to go to every Saturday carnival for the duration of ALL your events. This includes all students involved in sprints to remain for the relays.

If you do not turn up to training without seeing Miss Downey or Miss Floyd PRIOR to that session with a note you will be put on a detention. If you do not turn up to a Saturday meet or leave early without written permission from the Head of College or Head of Sport you will be put on a Saturday detention at the end of the season.

TRACK & FIELD 2017 TEAM SEASON 5

It is compulsory for students to attend all training sessions and to attend all meets.

Students are expected to wear the full Waverley College sports uniform to training. I encourage members from last year’s squad to wear the 2016 team shirt.

Each Saturday and at the CAS Championships, students are expected to wear the Waverley College athletics singlet, shorts and tracksuit. These items are available at from the uniform shop. Students who do not wear the correct uniform will be asked to remove foreign clothing items.

Students are expected to be on their best behaviour during training sessions. This includes displaying respect to external coaches and Waverley College staff and following any instructions that are given. I would like to highlight the importance of following instructions in the disciplines of Javelin, Shot Put and Discus, where safety is the priority. Any dangerous behaviour will not be tolerated.

Students participating in competition are expected to show respect and courtesy to the opposition during competition, as well as towards staff responsible for judging events. Remember the golden rule: “Magnanimous in victory, gracious in defeat.”

If any of these expectations are unclear, please contact Miss Downey or Mr O’Donnell.

6 TRACK & FIELD 2017 TEAM SEASON

“Parents aren’t the people you come from. They are the people you want to be when you grow up.”

Welcome all Parents and Friends to the 2017 Track and Field season! Over the years, Waverley College has had a number of success stories. The boys have won competitions, broken records and have enjoyed being involved in some tight battles with competing schools. This all comes back to the great opportunity and support provided by our parents. Waverley College has been blessed with some fantastic support from parents over the years and I would like to invite any interested parent to continue this support in the 2017 season.

The Supporter Group is looking at a number of initiatives to boost the profile of Track and Field at Waverley College, and would definitely appreciate any help from parents who have time to participate.
