Meanwhile, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said its diplomats wereinvestigating claims that militants abducted 60 foreignconstruction workers, including some 15 Turks, near the city ofKirkuk.

X-rays reveal the mysteries of fire-ant rafts
By Amina Knan
Published: June 16, 2014
Fire ants may be famous for their vicious sting, but theyre also
remarkable builders, able to quickly assemble a working raft
out of their own bodies and sail through dangerous flash flood
waters. But their secrets of living masonry have remained
shrouded from view. Now, scientists have peered into the heart of such fire-ant rafts
and discovered how the individual insects link together to
create these remarkably strong yet lightweight structures. Such
insight, described in a paper in the Journal of Experimental
Biology, may one day help engineers build self-healing
buildings and bridges.

capaces de hacer edificion y balsas con sus propios cuerpos,
por lo que los cientificos las estudian para mejorar las tecnicas

Fans want three changes: Javi Martnez, Koke and Pedro
By TYLER KEPNERPublished: June 18, 2014
In a survey ran by AS.com, with more than 80,000 votes, readers
want three changes to Del Bosque's Spain XI for the game
against Chile: Javi Martnez for Piqu, Koke for Xavi and Pedro
for Busquets
The votes also showed that Spain fans want the side to line up in
a 4-1-4-1 formation. They would sacrifice Busquets, leaving Xabi
Alonso as the only central midfielder, with Silva, Koke Iniesta and
Pedro forming an attacking line in front of him. It is the system
that saw the side win Euro 2008 with Marcos Senna in the
Alonso role. Up top, Diego Costa received 10,000 votes more
than Villa and five times as many votes as Torres, who came off
the bench to produce one of the misses of the tournamentagainst Holland.
Piqu pays the price for the disastrous showing first time out,
with Martnez the more popular option. The Barcelona man
does remain ahead of Ral Albiol, however. Azpilicueta and
Juanfran is a close call, whilst Casillas would be the man to start
between the sticks.

friends in the Paris fashion industry who were furious about a

Microgrid sales rise alongside qualms about the power grid
By TIMOTHY EGANJune 18, 2014 2013, 9:00 pm
The periodic blackouts in Cassina Tarsia's Oceanside
neighborhood meant the 71-year-old couldn't charge her
cellphone or electric wheelchair.
But outages aren't a problem anymore.
Since February, Tarsia's garage has housed a suitcase-sized
battery that stores power from her rooftop solar panels and
the main electrical grid. In a blackout, the battery can power
her home for days or even weeks.
"I think about what will happen in a big earthquake and what
happened in Japan with the tsunami," said Tarsia, who paid
$5,000 to get the battery installed. "I wanted to be prepared."In the garage of her Oceanside home, Cassina Tarsia sits in her
Tesla and looks at the large battery on the wall that stores
electricity to be used in case of a blackout. (Don Bartletti, Los
Angeles Times)

India's incomplete democracy
By STEPHANIE STROM
Published: june 16, 2014
In April and May, the world's largest democracy elected its latest
prime minister, Narendra Modi. Modi has promised to shake up
long-standing government corruption and bring prosperity to all
of India, as he did to the state of Gujarat as its chief minister.

But it wasn't just a desire for economic reform that helped seal
Modi's victory: He is the leader of the zealous Bharatiya Janata
Party, and he was ushered into office by a surge of Hindu
nationalism and religious fervor. Moreover, his effectiveness as a
uniting figure for India is called into question by his inaction inGujarat in 2002, when he did nothing to stop thousands of
Muslims from being massacred or made homeless by mobs.
With the ascension of Modi and the BJP come inevitable concerns
about India's willingness to treat all of its citizens equally. And it is
not just a problem between the nation's Hindu majority and
Muslims, who make up nearly 15% of the population.
