Besides background in industrial and footwear design, my main expertise is on ins-tructional illustrations, but I am also able to create expressive or artistic images (mixed media). My objective for the next years is to join my craft skills as illustrator (handrawn mainly) with my scientific knowledge on how to design effective graphic and cinematographic instructions.

Fifteen years experience as university lecturer including a short experience as teacher assistant at the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication (The University of Reading, UK). I have made presentations about the graphic representation of dyna-mic events in USA (Philadelphia and Atlanta) and UK (Wrexham, Cambridge, Greenwi-ch and Reading), where my audience included technical communicators, information designers and illustrators.

Bezerra da Silva, Rio’s Sambandit

DescriptionBezerra da Silva is a popular Brazilian musician famous by his sambas and lyrics about Rio de Janeiro’s shanty towns cha-racters and their marginal life.

According to AllMusic website, Bezerra da Silva has composed and performed sambas full of the Carioca malice (ma-landragem) of the hills, with which he chronicles the hardships of the shanty town dwellers (and the violence/drugs scenario, even before gangsta rap). Homage to Amy Winehouse

DescriptionMy homage to Amy Winehouse. This was based on Bryan Adam´s photo for Harper´s Bazaar Magazine.

The illustration is based on Bryan Adams’ photo for Harper’s Bazaar Magazine. The te-chnique is charcoal and gouache on tracing paper (A3 size). The illustra-tion was photogra-phed with Canon Power Shot digital camera.

Pictorial cards for alternativecommunication

DescriptionThese illustrations were developed for the project “Communis” sponsored by SENAI (Brazilian organisation that deals with industrial training). Communis is a graphic system formed by printed cards with images and text. It is targeted to industrial managers who has to deal with employees that have speech difficulties (e.g. brain damages, intellectual defi-ciency, autism). In graphic terms, there is an obvious influence from Otto Neurath and Gerd Arntz work for the Isotype. Ho-wever, later on these drawings had to be changed in order to fit to the in-house designer’s style.

Collection and “show and tell” about illustrated manuals

DescriptionThis is a small sample of my collection of more than 300 illustrated manuals. The start point was my PhD research, which has a chapter on “graphic repre-sentations of motion for instructional purposes”. Besides working as a source of ideas, the collection became a topic of “show and tell” presentations at the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication (The University of Rea-ding, United Kingdom) and Department of Design (Federal University of Paraná, Curitiba, Brazil).


Product design

“Hero” is targeted to the safety footwear marketing, which at that time did not offer footwear that could be considered technologi-cally advanced as performance footwear.

Footwear design

DescriptionDrawings developed during my Indus-trial Master Degree and job as designer consultant in Brazil.

These are design projects that I have developed during my MA (1992, Birmin-gham City University, UK) and for Brazi-lian north east companies (1992-1998). Initially, I was strongly influenced by technological and fashion trends related to sports shoes design (Nike, Reebok and Adidas products). The prototypes of the “Hero Collection” of safety footwear were sponsored by C&J Clark International the biggest British footwear company.

Constructive drawings used to guide the production of sandals prototypes.

Later on, I had the opportunity to work as designer for Bra-zilian small compa-nies and artisans´s community. “Bra-zilian North east Sandals” collection was designed to be in tune with local needs and aesthetic expressions, tight budget and very li-mited technological resources.
