developed for the latest MAN B&W and Sulzer 2-stroke engines with high scavenging air pressure and turbocharger efficiency requirements.

TPL Lubrication The TPL turbochargers are designed for operation with engine lubricating oil with required filtration 50 µm filter mesh size. Thus ABB doesn't recommend an independent lubricating oil system, but leaves it as an option to the engine builder, shipyard and shipowner. The axial floating disc rotates at about half of the rotor RPM between the rotating and static thrust bearing components. This design reduces the relative velocities, enables better oil film formation and declination tolerance and prolongs the bearing life time. The design bearing lifetime is 35'000 hours for the above mentioned oil filtration.

TPL Bearings and Lubrication In case of disturbance in lubricating oil supply, the integrated oil tank on the turbocharger secures a safe rotor run down. If the oil supply is disturbed because of e.g. a black out, there is more that sufficient amount of oil in the tank to secure bearing lubrication after engine shut down.

Materials • casings:

• compressor wheel aluminium alloy • turbine: turbine disc ST13t, turbine blades Nimonic alloy • bearings: bronze metal for CS/TS radial bearings and patented ADLC coated

(amorphous diamond like carbon) floating disc as axial bearing part

Installation • No water connections for cooling, integrated washing nozzle for turbine washing. • Only one oil inlet and outlet at the turbocharger bottom. • The typical TPL..B accessories are filter silencer and compressor washing vessel.

The turbine water washing nozzle is integrated in the gas inlet casing and like turbocharger RPM pickup standard scope of delivery. Air, exhaust gas and oil temperatures before and after turbocharger are typically measured.

• Both the VTR and TPL types are of modular design. For example, the compressor wheel, diffuser, nozzle ring and turbine blades will be specified in order to match the turbocharger for a specific engine application based on the information received from the engine builder.

Lifetime of Most Important Components • Bearings: The TPL turbochargers are designed for operation with engine

lubricating oil with required filtration 50 µm filter mesh size. The design bearing lifetime is 35'000 hours for the above mentioned oil filtration.

• Compressor: Lifetime according to ABB Safety Concept 100'000 hours at continuous full load operation for present 2-stroke applications.

• Turbine (bladed shaft): Lifetime according to ABB Safety Concept 100'000 hours at continuous full load operation for present 2-stroke applications.
