Interview with the Head Organizers

Everyone knows about your experience in EYP but we want to know why did you decide to head organize this forum? P-“My favourite position in EYP has always been an organiser. Since the first session I par-ticipated I noticed that the most exciting posi-tion was an organiser. I have been an organiser several times; I even had to cook for all the peo-ple in one session. My goal always was to or-ganise an international forum. I guess it came true. Its hard work, that’s for sure but I love it!”

Sh-“Organising is one of the most challeng-ing in the EYP structure; therefore you can put yourself before challenges as an indi-vidual, head organiser and teammate. I have been an organiser for 2 times (two NSC in Albania) and I wanted to put myself up in higher risks; to manage to put together all

the pieces for an EYP event.” Up till know, what do you think of the forum? I mean are your things going according to the plans? P-“Nothing in life goes accord-ing to plans. I tend to keep this in mind every day. I admit organ-ising a forum in papers seems a piece a cake but practically it means freaking hard work. No sleep, no rest and a lot of ciga-rettes. On general things are go-ing according plans but we had many deviations. I am trying to get the best out of this session!”

Sh-“If I say yeah I would be lying because nothing goes the you want it to. I will have to bear in mind that nothing is impossible; we have to have back-up plans and avoid failures. I’ve had sleepless nights, I’ve been stressed and I‘ve done my best for this forum. To sum up, everything is going almost smoothly and we might have had a couple of problems. Every-thing else is confidential.” Today is the second day of committee work. GA is coming, what are your expectations?

P-“From the organizational point of view, Shpendi, all the other organisers I and have provided the necessary conditions for the del-egates to compile their resolutions. From the delegate’s point of view, I think they are ready”

Sh-“That everything works up smooth-ly and without any technical problems. I just want to make sure that participants get what they need, when they need it”

All this hard work must mean something. What do you gain from organizing this forum?

P-“That’s simple. What I gain is the enthusiasm from the delegates and the ability to test my limits. ”

Sh-“I get to recall the moments as a delegate and prepare the future EYPers for what’s ahead of them. ”

So guys it’s time for the next interview. This time I am interviewing our crazy little Head Organisers: Shpendi and Pamela. These guys are the ones who made this forum possible. I consider them really

close friends of mine and I know that they have worked their butts off since June. I congratulate them for their terrific work. One of the many reasons I decided to apply to this forum as a journalist is because I knew that these guys would organize something different, something pleasant. Anyways, let’s start!

Many of you may have noticed me with my practically ‘Man in White’ suit hanging around, however, yet almost none of you no-

ticed my belt, which you may think that I bought from Hermes. Now, I will tell you the tragicomic story of the brand ‘Hamdi Belts’.

One day, I was looking for a belt, which can go with my trousers but any of the belts that I have has with my pants. Than all of a sudden the idea of requesting a design from a brand popped up in my mind. Nonethe-less this would be so banal for me so I brainstormed with myself and decided to create a brand that consists my name to keep my grand grand father’s memory alive so I wanted to do this as soon as possible. Frankly, this idea wasn’t occurred just because of the need for a belt. The person, who I was being named from, my supreme grand grand father Hamdi had a dream of setting up a company. As I was his heir, I have undertaken this job.

When I first started this company, my aim was to place a gigantic shining H letter as the belt buckle. Mention-ing this always makes me sorrowful and gives me goose bumps. Once, my grand grand father selected his fa-vorite belt buckle from his collection; the one figured with ‘H’ and than he tried to put it on his belt. If only he didn’t… He get so stressed that he got a nervous break-down and died! This made us totally sad. I hope that this brand that carries my grand grand fathers names first letter, may become popular with its durability, price and quality. No body will get into the situation of my grand grand father (tiny teardrops)… I won’t let it.

The willingness that I had inside me of this job got big-ger every time the face of my grand grand father comes

to my mind. Because of him the way I look at the belt buckles changed. The first thing that I did after his death was to damage all the belt buckles in his collec-tion. Things happened spontaneously fast and I got to high communities.

Finally the time have had come. I was finally succeeded and set up the company. Actually I was really confused that I came to where I am by the help of belt buckles which reminds me of him so I wasn’t sure whether to thank him or get angry. Apart from that I knew some-thing very well that I will create a belt having two sides and a buckle with ‘H’ on it. That way I thought that I would pay back to my grand grand father.

Lastly I got the fruits of all the labor. However somehow I managed to leave the job after I started the production of the belt. It maybe caused of the fact that my grand grand father was also lazy so it may somehow pass to me. I acted, as my only purpose was to make a belt. All the efforts that I faced for him has lost like words on the sand. Wonder how? My company was to someone, who later than changed the name to Hermes. Since I was so ashamed I couldn’t even get into community for some time.

All in all everything turned back to normal but I was holding a belt that I can wear until the end of my life, which has two sides and a buckle with my grand grand fathers memory on it. For this reason I neither had no regrets nor the problem of belt anymore…

So guys this is my made-up story which I hope you to like it since it has literally no connection with original belts of Hermes.

Generally speaking, depression is a path-ological psychological situation that is characterized by abnormal gloomy be-

havior and reluctance to see the positive side of things. Depression is most often caused by stimuli that are formed after actions take place. More specifically, actions or people can prove strong emotional states that affect heavily one’s psychological state.

As a matter of fact, even if this is your first time you’ve set sail in the waters of EYP, you prob-ably have felt how intense an EYP Session can be. Meeting so many people who come from different backgrounds, countries and sharing a lot of viewpoints and unique experiences to-gether is something that affects you as a per-sonality. Spending your whole schedule by be-ing engaged in all kinds of EYP activities with fellow EYPers has an impact on how you are. So, it’s straightforward that as long as the ses-sion goes on your everyday life takes an inter-estingly different turn, resulting in a feeling of joy, friendship, social interaction. What hap-pens though when the session is official de-clared closed during Closing Ceremony, the

program shows ‘’Departures’’ for the day you are in, farewell party meets its title and you finally see your hotel rooms getting vacant be-cause the people you’ve been spending your time with started taking planes/buses/trains/ships to get back home?-‘’Is it serious, doctor?’’

Well, first of all welcome to the condition of PED, the term which is widely known in the EYP world as Post EYP Depression. Knock-ing on your door unexpectedly after the ses-sion, PED draws an analogy to typical depres-sion syndromes, making your hype go hit the bottom line. Symptoms vary, but generally include unwillingness to get back to school/university/work routine, moody behavior when with friends, feeling of melancholy that is partially reassured by browsing/liking/com-menting Facebook photos and posts. It is this feeling of emptiness as well which makes PED-stricken EYPers feel powerless to readjust to the rhythm of their normal lives. Other than that, one should have in mind this prototype: The more the days and the people one gets to know the more probable it will be for him/her

to suffer from PED symptoms.

Luckily though, you don’t need to take medi-cine so as to kick PED away. In fact, the Board of EYP Mental and Psychological Health, the EYP Institution on Welfare and Good Times and most probably anyone you can ask in an EYP Session have found a solution to the PED issue; It’s application filling. This seemingly daunting activity is the way one can make to get a step closer to a next EYP session some-where in the continent. From the point of the submission of the application, happy feelings should start appearing once more. Especially if the application goes through and the applicant gets a position, it is then when PED disappears. Concluding and answering the last question, the answer is: you’ll live. However, once you start having PED, it is most sure you will have those feelings each time a session ends. Stay positive though! Next sessions are never far.

Revolving around the session’s theme, the committee topics cover different aspects conveying the notions of sus-

tainability and advancement in various fields. Development is a crucial factor to any kind of human activity though, making things go fur-ther. Who said however that development and growth refers only to earthly matters?

As a matter of fact, EU has plans to discover the space outside our earthly residence. Namely, there exist the European Space Agency (ESA), a body related to space research and the Gali-leo project which could probably make a seri-ous competent to the US-based GPS system. Thus, the potential of the Union to progress on space innovation is also depicted.

ESA was established in 1975 and is an inter-governmental organisation, currently with 19

member states that have established relevant to space exploration and of even expenditures preparations, having their share in ESA’s ex-penditures. The headquarters are in Paris, with s a staff more than 2,000 with an annual budget of about €4.02 billion.

According to the official statement, ESA’s pur-pose ‘’shall be to provide for, and to promote, for exclusively peaceful purposes, cooperation among European States in space research and technology and their space applications, with a view to their being used for scientific purposes and for operational space applications systems: By elaborating and implementing a long-term European space policy, by recommending space objectives to the Member States, and by concerting the policies of the Member States with respect to other national and internation-al organisations and institutions;

By elaborating and implementing activities and programs in the space field;By coordinating the European space program and national programs, and by integrating the latter progressively and as completely as pos-sible into the European space program, in par-ticular as regards the development of applica-tions satellites;By elaborating and implementing the indus-trial policy appropriate to its program and by recommending a coherent industrial policy to the Member States.’’

In that way, EU gets into then space race, seek-ing a sustainable between fund management and optimal handling and saving of a compe-tent position worldwide, as is the case for all EU development and growth, efficiency-tar-geting programs and plans.

The year is 2012 and we finally seem to have everything we ever dreamed of: mobile phones, iPod’s, digital cam-

era’s… But even though we have all this tech-nology, there are lots of people that refuse to use it. I have friends that only by vinyl, that stick to their 10-year-old phone… I’ll be honest, I’m Matteo and I don’t posses a digi-tal camera. How I make pictures? Analogue style!

My god is called Lomography and they make cheap camera’s that will only take film, just like in the old days. You’ll probably know Lomography unconsciously from the fish-

eye cameras, but what is Lomography really? Lomography is a company, a movement and a community and it all started in 1991 when this Austrian guy experimented with an old Rus-sian camera that was called the Lomo LC-A. The pictures the camera’s made failed miser-ably, but nevertheless they were what we would call now “awesome”. The idea of this movement is to spread the love for analogue photography.

Yes, working analogue has a lot of disadvan-tages: you never know if your picture will be the way you intended it, you need to buy films, developing is expensive… But there’s one big advantage: whatever you do, every picture you

make is really cool. This can also be found in what they call the “ten golden rules of Lomog-raphy”. My favourites are “Don’t think” (6), “You don’t have to know what you captured on film” (8) and the last one “Don’t worry about any rules” (10)

My friends always make fun of me when I walk around with what they call my “hipster camera” but they are also always begging me to make a picture of them. I would love to show you some pictures I’ve made of this session, but as you could have already guessed, they aren’t developed yet. Anyway, every picture you see here is 100% EYP!

After having spent some days in the Fo-rum, all people, including first time EYPers, have now acquired some ex-

perience about how things work in a session. What will be more interesting to find out though will maybe be to find out about dif-ferent session types that are organised in the European Youth Parliament.

We are all participating in an International Fo-rum. International Forums, having similarities with Regional Sessions, are events organised all over the continent. Their duration may vary from session to session, but they all gather to-gether participants from more than just one country. In order to participate in such events, one should fill application forms equivalent to the position desired. Other than that, both International Forums and Regional Sessions include more than the basic EYP session ele-ments (i.e. Teambuilding, Committee Work and General Assembly), having in-session events such as the Eurovillage and the Euro-concert.

Other types of EYP Sessions are the National Selection Conferences (NSCs) that are car-ried out by national committees all over EYP countries. Those conferences last less than International Forums or Regional Sessions, approximately around 3-4 days. During that time, the basic EYP session elements are taking place. As the National Selection Conference, a special group of experienced EYPers, the ju-rors, are responsible for ultimately selecting delegates to take part in International Sessions or generally other EYP events abroad. In some countries, high schools are sending students as delegates in NSCs but in others it is up to the interested individual to apply for the position. Either way, all interested to participate in their next National Committee’s National Selection Conference should come in contact with the organising team first for questions and clarifi-cations on the topic of application.

Finally, there are the International Sessions, which are full EYP scale, 10 day long EYP events taking part 3 times a year. So as for

someone to participate as a delegate in an IS, he/she has to be selected through a National Selection Conference. An IS comprises once more all fundamental EYP activities alongside with Eurovillage and Euroconcert and brings together about 250 people from all EYP coun-tries. International Sessions are organised by the International Committee in cooperation with a national committee.

Getting involved in sessions is the first and foremost step into being a part of the European Youth Parliament and its spirit. So, next time you see a session coming up and you feel like joining it, do not hesitate, take a step forward and click the submit button of your applica-tion!

Guiding through the different species of EYP Sessions

This article is basically about my first thoughts when I heard about this topic. When you give a quick look at this top-

ic, you think it’s a pretty easy topic. It is when you really start thinking and brainstorming this topic, you realize this topic is deeper than it seems. There may be many interpretations on this topic but pertaining to the EYP mission and objectives the interpretation it’s really clear.  This topic concerns the social and economi-cal growth Albania is experiencing. Still re-covering from the communist regime the Albanians went through, we have progressed a lot. People are starting to be more alert to the world around us and their culture. For example they have started to become more open-minded about things like religion, eth-nicity, sexuality and fashion. This growth is exemplary but there is still a long road ahead. Albania should keep going on this pace but still there are some supplementary but yet very important things that should be done. Imple-menting the European mentality is the very

essence of social progression and the decisive step so that Albania can become a part of the EU. My generation and younger ones are get-ting more and more familiar to this mentality. Still we should reinforce this via education and different activities for example the EU Infor-mation Centre located in Tirana. I was there once with my school and I found the place re-ally informing and educational. This facility could be used for further education of children and teenagers about EU. Schools and universi-ties all around Albania should organize trips or conferences in this centre. This should also be done for older ages. Implementing this kind of understanding on workspaces would bring a greater productivity and efficiency. Organizing EYP Albania sessions and forum is a crucial step to achiev-ing this kind of social development. To conclude Albania is doing really good so-cially but there is a lot to be done and imple-menting EU mentality is one of them.

What is your real nationality?

In our post-modern society, people are very eager to discover themselves. Every now and then, we all ask ourselves who we are? Where do we belong? People have found a lot of different ways to answer these questions like religion, yoga, swimming with dolphins; but non of these

can guarantee you that you will find the answers. We, the members of the media team, have care-fully analysed ‘stuff ’ in order to find a method that guarantee’s a correct answer. Our very own president Tiago has even tested the following test and we were honoured when he gave us his “Tiago premium quality label”. Now it’s up to you! Answer every question as honest as you can and also don’t forget to keep track of how many A’s, B’s and C’s you have.

Mostly ACongratulations, you’re Italian! You like eating pasta and the most important person in your life is ‘la mamma’. The fact that the country where you live/should live is boot shaped makes that you are a by nature an expert for when it comes to fashion. As Italy is a Mediterranean country makes you a born seducer. This is probably also a reason why democracy works so good in your country…

Mostly BGuess what, you’re Albanian! As this country has been isolated for a while, you’re still often dancing in circles. Albanian guys like to go the fitness and show this to world through quite transparent T-shirts and Albanian girls are known to be quite pretty. Because of the influence of your counties close to you, you drink ouzo like the Greek, kebab like the Turks and fight communism like the Bulgarians.

Mostly CNot bad, you are Dutch! Your country is named for a lot of things that are unfortunately not appropriate to men-tion here. You like to wear pink shirts and you tend to put gel in your blond hair. You didn’t only steel beer from the Belgians, you also stole their waffles and put “stroop” between them to avoid a conflict like Apple and Samsung had. Aside from this, you’re still very nice people that can dance and make music like nobody else’s ever could.

Sigrun lives in Stockholm, Sweden, and the thing she loves the most about her country is that the people are so open-minded and social there. Just like everyone in Sweden, she’s a huge fan of ABBA and her favourite song is Euphoria by Loreen.

Panaghiotis is from Thessaloniki, Greece, and he is most proud for the language and the positive predictableness of his country. If he could live anywhere in Europe, he would want to live in Vienna He says that the city is very structured and structure is also one of the things he likes the most.

Magda is from Krakow, Poland, and she says it is the most beautiful city of the country. She doesn’t like Poland for the narrow-mind-ed attitude of the people and because of the politicians. With her terrible singing voice she loves to sing the Polish national anthem.

Even though Chris has a very English accent and he hates the taste of vodka, he comes from Poland. He loves the fact that his country has the biggest statue of Jesus in the world; even bigger than the one in Rio de Janeiro. Chris has a very strange preference when it comes to pizza, as his favourite top-ping is kebab and Gorgonzola.

Izaura is Albanian, but she lives in Greece. This is probably because of the fact that she doesn’t like Albanian busses as they often have holes. Her favourite drink is called “dhallë” and it’s a mix of yoghurt with water. If she could move to another country, she would move to Finland as she finds the dark-ness very inspiring.

Tiago loves his country Portugal for its capi-tal Lisbon where he also lives. One reason why he might move to his favourite city in the world London is because he doesn’t like the feeling of determinism which is very present with the Portuguese.

Ilir is the only true Albanian chair at this session. He loves it here so much because he finds the country is a real mess. Just like with people, you need to look for the inner beauty. His favourite football team is the Italian team Juventus. Once, he even went to Italy for one day just to visit the stadium. If he could compose an ice cream with three flavours, he would choose chocolate, snickers and straciatella.

Achilleas is Greek and he has a passion for ice cream and lila-pause ice cream to be precise. He came to this conclusion after comparing a lot of different flavours. Next in line are menthe and chocolate chip cookies ice cream. He finds Greece special for the fact that it’s a westernised eastern country, but he doesn’t like the fact that the people that actually do the good work, don’t get the recognition they deserve.

1. Didn’t know until last week that Zaghreb was the capital of Croatia.2. At a session, this persons snoring made his roommate sleep in the bad tub3. Once was paid 30 euros by a random guy in a bar to teach him pick-up lines.4. This person once fell asleep on the toilet at a session. He hadn’t slept for more than two hours the previous nights and he had just done an all-nighter. After having slept two hours on the toilet, he woke up with his ass and legs totally numb which leaded to him having to drag himself to the shower. 5. Once missed a flight because she was get-ting a cheeseburger.6. This person has not one single song on her computer, as she only wants to listen to music on the radio.7. The total amount of words of almost every written message of this person must be divis-ible by three.8. He likes to crack his toes.

A day different than the other ones so far, a day when an excursion could only be the best option to

take away the tension of the previous full activity-packed activity times.

After getting on the bus, we settled off to the coastal city of Durres. We were sup-posed to visit a museum but it was not available due to renovation works, so the group moved to the Amphitheater in the city. After making the EYP forma-tion, teambuilding games took place in the center of the place that looked like a small arena; Street fighters among other games found hence a good background.

Pictures of the day get the feeling of the day better forward! Hope everyone had a relaxing time in almost burning hot sunny Durres and by now is ready and satisfied with the resolutions for which the chairpersons have been working on. GA mode is on!

When I was I delegate, I always used to think that I had the most boring position at the session. It always

looked like all the officials where having a way better time then I had, but to be honest this is not always true. In the end, every EYP’er looks back with a lot of nostalgia to his or her time as a delegate.

The expiration date for an official is a lot longer than for a delegate. Some people have been of-ficials for ten years where you can only be a delegate for a much shorter time. This is also why they always gave me the advice, which I would now like to hand over to you, to enjoy your time as delegate at the fullest and to not end it as soon as possible. Remember that you are the people where all this is happening for, you are the kings and queens of a session. The officials are all there to make sure that every-thing goes as fluently as possible so you have a great time. When you guys are out partying, we are the ones that are writing articles or that are busy with chairs meetings. Officials are the most altruistic people on earth.

But when you are ready to make the big step to the world of officials, the best advice I can give you is to first make yourself an account on the EYP alumni network (http://alumni.eypej.org). On this website, you can find all the up-coming session and often with information on how to apply as an official. Apart from this, I would also advise you to follow the activities of your own national committee’s like alumni ac-tivities and trainings. Last of all, the most im-portant thing is to apply, apply and apply. Don’t give up if you don’t get selected straight away, it happens to everyone! Just keep trying; with every application you write, you get better at it.

One day, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to work together with someone you met here. Maybe it will be a fellow delegate and maybe it will be someone of the official’s team. Either way, you’ll get to be nostalgic about this session, be-cause I think we have all had some memorable moments here.

It was the summer of 2011. I was in the US to work as counselor and as a lifeguard in a children’s camp. This was my first time

working with kids and going into a camp. The camp was called Camp Tommy and it was lo-cated in uptown New York. It was part of the Fresh Air Fund along with 4 other camps. Af-ter acquiring the necessary skills to lifeguard like first aid and rescue techniques I started to lifeguard full time at the lake. It was a great ex-perience I have to admit but very tiring. I had so much fun, so I decided again to go to camp again. This year I was promoted as a lifeguard and as a camp administrator. If Tiago, Pamela or Shpendi think it’s hard work to organize a forum, they should try to administer this camp. They have to administer 300 boys and girls, age 12-15 and with their hormones blast-ing off the roof! And there’s the New Yorker attitude. “N*gga” this and “n*gga that”. Really annoying! Nonetheless in order to make them sleep we tell bedtime stories, mostly scary sto-ries. It said that every camp, all around the world, has its own paranormal stories. We told several ones to our kids like Butt-naked Billy that escaped from the mental institution and Blue Boy. Many years ago in my camp a life-

guard failed to do his job and a kid drowned in the lake. His body was found after several months on the bottom of the lake. Rumor had it that there was a ghost in camp: a little boy with a blue apparition-like body. They say that it’s the ghost of the kid that drowned staying in this mortal plane only to torture the lives of the lifeguards. Of course I didn’t believe this at first, I just thought it’s just a piece of crap. The other day I and all of the other lifeguards decided to do the Ouija board. I think you know all the details about that. If you don’t know what an Ouija board along with this article there will be a picture. Basically it’s used to summon spirits. After we were done with the board, it was the middle of the night, the forest was pitch-black, I was returning to my cabin. While walking by the softball field I see a translucent blue figure. I blink my eyes and look again. His eyes cap-tured mine. Cold and terror ran through my veins as his huge spooky eyes stared at mine. I turned my head and kept walking straight. I walked to my cabin and never thought about it. TRUE STORY!!!
