    TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC)

In 1937, Kiichiro Toyoda founded Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. (Toyota Motor Corporation

today) as a venture business, over the opposition of people around him. It was a spin -off

from Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, which was then one of the world's l eading

manufacturers of weaving machinery. Automobile manufacturing covers many industrial

areas, and later such operations as "materials," "machine tools" and "parts" were spun off

as independent operations. The Toyota Group today is made up of such busin ess

operations, reflecting the history of Toyota's corporate venture drive.

At present, Toyota is active in a number of areas in addition to its core business of

automobile manufacturing-Areas including housing, financial services, communications,

GAZOO, marine vehicles, biotechnology and afforestation, to name a few. Moreover, Toyota

has established a venture fund with the purpose of fostering an in -house ambience that

promotes creativity and an enterprising spirit, and is seeking seeds of e nterprise outside the

company as well. The Toyota Group is thus active in promoting ventures into new frontiers

    of human activity.

In the future, we plan to further advance the products and systems we have put into

practical use thus far, and to systematically combine automobiles with social infrastructures

in a ubiquitous-network society. In these ways, Toyota will continue to strive to build the

new IT-based society of the 21st century.

Vehicles have enriched people lives, added convenience, and have become an essential part

of modern life and today's economic activities. However, vehicles have also led to increases

in traffic accidents, congestion and environmental problems caused by exhaust emissions.

In order to solve these problems, international organizations and governmental authorities

have implemented policies and measures, while auto manufacturers have been putting

considerable effort into improving their vehicles. In addition, working together with

governmental agencies and academia, the automotive industry has advanced Intelligent

    Transport Systems(ITS

    *

), applying remarkable innovations in electronics, and informationand communication technologies to vehicles.

Recently, ITS has gained redognition as being more than just a method to solve

transportation problems. ITS also has been drawing attention as an influential means to

realize a transportation sysytem that offers saftey, peace of mind and comfort by increasing

the convenice of vehicles and the mobility society as a whole, while serving as an influential

means to contribute to the realization of an enriched low carbon society, which is a key

    global environmental issue.

When the private-sector organization VERTIS(Vehicle, Road and Traffic Intelligence Society, presently ITS Japan)was estabished in 1994 in Japan to promote the comercialization of ITS,

the blueprint presented by ITS was still conceptual. T oday, ITS has advanced to a stage

where various systems such as navigation systems and ETC have already been

    commercialized.

Moreover, within the Japanese government's New IT Reform Strategy, which aims to realize

a ubiquitous and universal network society where everyone can enjoy the benefits of IT in

FY2010, ITS is positioned as a focal area for the future. Various efforts have been

implemented by performing large-scale verification tests on public roads.

Toyota is aiming to lead in the development of a truly enriched mobility society in the 21st

century. Therefore, we have been actively supporting the commercialization of ITS in order

to bring technological harmony and balance to our mobility society and to ensure that it can

grow in a sustainable manner. In the future, Toyota plans to further develop the products

and systems we have put into practial use thus far, and to systematically combine vehicles

with social infrastructures in a ubiquitous-network society, as we continue to strive to build

the new ITS-driven mobility society of the 21st century.

*ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems): Advanced transport systems that are constructed to

integrate people, vehicles, and the traffic environment, using state -of-the-art information

and communication technologies to build a safe, comfortable and smooth transport

    infrastructure.

GAZOO started in April 1998, by providing a visual vehicle information network via the

Internet. By December 1999, GAZOO advanced into e -commerce activities with the

establishment of the GAZOO "Shopping Mall". Soon after, GAZOO enhanced its contents so

members could enjoy services such as buying CDs and books, and making reservations at

hotels. Now, members can also take advantage of new finance related services. GAZOO is

determined to deliver superior contents and services to help members enhance lifestyles.

To facilitate access, GAZOO developed a multi-media kiosk, called the "E-Tower", to realize

the idea, "Enjoy GAZOO anywhere, anytime." Currently, GAZOO is setting up E -Towers not

only in nationwide Toyota dealerships and Toyota related facilities, but also in nationwide

    convenience stores.

GAZOO promises to work on creating a new relationship between automobiles and people

by making the best use of the technology, information, know-how, and infrastructure.

From land to sea, Toyota is expanding into the marine business with pleasure crafts and marine engi

    engineering, design, andenvironmental considerations.

Toyota is making contributions to the world of the 21st century by developing new

    businesses.

At one point in time, automobile manufacturing was just another new business offshoot of

Toyoda Automatic Loom Works. The visionary founder of the company, Kiichiro Toyoda,

strongly believed in the coming age of the automobile, and it is no exaggeration to say that

his resolute pursuit of that dream helped build the Toyota we know today.
