Luxury Aurion given steroidsPolice are trying to
tactfully remind mo-torcyclists to ride to
their skill level this summer as more baby boomers take to the roads on two wheels.
The Coromandel and Hau-raki Districts have spectacu-lar views and vistas and one of the best ways to see the sights is by motorcycle, but this terrain can be very un-forgiving if you fi nd yourself involved in a crash.
Police Eastern Waikato Area Commander, Inspec-tor Glenn Dunbier said over the past three years 50% of New Zealand’s ACC injury claims involving motorcycles originated from the Thames- Coromandel and Hauraki District Council areas.
“Over this period motor-cycle injuries cost the country approximately $3.2 million dollars, and of that, about $2.2 million dollars originat-ed from claims in our area.”
Analysis of the crashes show that while some lo-cal residents were involved, by and large the majority of injury claimants came from Auckland, the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.
“Across the country peo-ple are returning to riding motorcycles both as a more economical form of transport and as a lifestyle change,” said Mr Dunbier.
“Anecdotally we know most of the crashes have involved day trippers and people on bike runs visiting
the Thames- Coromandel and Hauraki Districts.”
One of the problems iden-tifi ed by crash investigators is that the cognitive skill level of new or returning rider ’s does not match the size and power of today’s motorcycles.
“In other words, new bikes are too large and powerful for their skill levels to ride safely, particularly around the Coromandel’s roads.
“Our environment is very unforgiving. Falling off a bike on a country road a rider may slide onto the grass verge and be relatively unscathed. But on Coromandel roads we have trees, bridges, dirt banks and seawalls which means our crashes usually result in seri-ous injury or death,” said Mr Dunbier.
To that end Eastern Waikato Police are working with partner agencies such as local governments, road-ing engineers and road safety educators to highlight the is-sue.
“And of course there’ll be an enforcement element as we increase our presence placing emphasis on speed, alcohol and compliance of both vehi-cles and riders’ licences.
“For a Police offi cer fatal crashes are one of the worst jobs to go to. Not only is there the trauma of the scene, but shocked witnesses to in-terview and grieving family to inform. This campaign is all about avoiding that and re-ducing our road trauma.”
Take it easyBy Dean Taylor
Imust admit that I was a little surprised when Waikato Toyota’s Les
Murrell offered me a test drive - in his parent’s car.
I had driven the Toyota Aurion back in February last year, so what had changed? Well in this model, quite a lot.
Last year I said the Aus-sie built Toyota was defi -nitely worth a look in the over $40,000 ‘big’ car category.
Back then the 204kW, six speed Toyota was a great option.
Now they have the Spor-tivo ZR6 - a sort of luxury sports model that is the fl ag-ship Toyota sedan.
So in the model Les sold his parents, it features keyless entry and keyless push button start, satellite navigation, premier sound system, reversing camera, 17” wheels and beefed up suspension front and rear to give it a more sporty stance
and handling characteristics. But inside it is about
luxury and refi nement, with leather and clean lines.
It is easy to for-get just how good the 3.5litre V6 is. 204kW and 346Nm
of torque is still very impres-sive.
In a six speed automatic,
with manual option, it means the ZR6 can turn from gen-tle around-town sedan to
mean-machine in an instant.
As I mentioned in 2007, the V6 sounds like it means busi-
ness, yet most of the time driver and passengers are cocooned in their own en-vironment - little noise from the outside enters the cabin, climate is fully under control and the Aurion whisks you to your next destination.

To help motorists reduce their impact on the environment and save them fuel this summer, the
Automobile Association is distributing free Make Cars Green booklets with tips on greener driving.
AA Motoring Affairs General Manager, Mike Noon, says there is no better time to be using fuel effi cient driving techniques, while at the same time reducing the impact cars have on the environment.
“We have experienced a turbulent year with regard to petrol prices. Add in the current economic climate and upcoming festive spending, now is a good time to put these techniques into action to save money and drive fuel ef-fi ciently.”
The Make Cars Green booklet is part of an ongoing international envi-ronmental campaign supported by the FIA, of which the AA is a member, and Bridgestone. The global launch of the campaign took place in New Zea-land earlier this year on World Environ-ment Day.
Mr Noon says “driving fuel effi cient-ly not only saves money and reduces
emissions, it is also safer.” Make Cars Green booklets are avail-
able at AA Centres and AA Vehicle Testing Stations nationwide now.
● Buy Green - Check environmental performance (emission standards/fuel economy) before you buy a new car, fuel and components.
● Plan your journey - Planning your route can avoid delay and diversion. Ten minutes of unnecessary driving in a one hour trip results in a 14% decrease in fuel effi ciency.
● Check tyre pressures frequently - Driving on tyres with air pressure 50kPA lower than it should be de-creases fuel effi ciency by between 2% and 4%.
● Reduce loads and avoid the need for roof racks - Driving with 100kg of unnecessary onboard weight leads to a 3% decrease in fuel effi ciency and lug-gage on the roof will add to aerody-namic drag.
● Don’t warm up your engine be-fore starting off - Today’s passenger cars don’t require warming up, except in cold climates and after long periods of non-use. Slow running is enough to
warm up the engine. ● Use air conditioning only when
necessary - Avoid setting the AC too low. AC when the outdoor temperature is 25 degrees decreases fuel effi ciency by 12%.
● Accelerate gently and keep your speed constant - Start off gently (20km/h in 5 seconds, for an 11% increase in fuel economy) and avoid abrupt, heavy accelerations while driving. Avoid tail-gating causing unnecessary acceleration/deceleration which costs 2% and 6% less fuel effi ciency respectively in urban and suburban areas.
● Use engine braking - Releasing the accelerator when recognising the need to slow down stops the fuel supply leading to a 2% increase in fuel effi ciency.
● Don’t idle your engine - Ten min-utes of engine idling (in neutral, with the AC off) wastes 130cc of fuel. Turn your engine off instead of letting it idle.
● Offset your CO2 emissions - if you are driving economically and can’t reduce your car use then consider buy-ing carbon offsets equivalent to your annual mileage.
Environment Waikato is remind-ing motorcyclists and drivers of four-wheel drive vehicles to
keep out of sand dunes on the region’s West Coast beaches for human safety and environmental reasons.
The appeal comes ahead of a tra-ditionally busy summer holiday season period for the beaches.
Last year EW publicly appealed for caution after a series of incidents and near misses involving motorcycles, four-wheel drives and beach users in dunes at Port Waikato, Raglan and Ruapuke.
EW community education facilita-tor Sam Stephens says given our envi-ronmental protection role, we’re also concerned that the vehicles can damage the sensitive ecosystems on the dunes, threatening the stability of beaches, and can hurt birdlife.
New Zealand’s dunes have had their native vegetation reduced to only 11% of its original cover. Volunteers put hun-dreds of hours each year into restoring these degraded dunes, and all this hard work can be undone in a single after-noon by vehicles being driven through
these fragile areas, Mr Stephens said.He said people were able to make
complaints to police about anyone using bikes or four-wheel drives in a danger-ous manner, and could also approach their local councils if they were con-cerned about environmental damage.
“Environment Waikato has set up a complaints register that is recording details of every complaint we receive about vehicles on to provide a better picture of where the hotspot areas are in the Waikato region and who is in-volved.”
10 ways to be greener
Keep off the sand dunes
By Dean Taylor
DriveBy readers are looking at one of the most unique
motorcycles in the world - the one-off CALSCO Ethan-Nova 985 built on-and-off over seven years in Grant Pye’s shed.
To say Mr Pye is fanatical about bikes is a bit of an un-derstatement.
He has enjoyed riding bikes on the road and track for about 40 years.
It was about the time his father died that he became inspired to build something unique in his Te Awamutu shed.
Originally the bike was for competing in the Paeroa Street race, but when it was fi nished Mr Pye thought it was too good for racing.
He says he has exceeded even his own expectations, and judging from the stares and admiration the bike gets, he has done something right.
He started with the idea of a great road bike using an air cooled engine from the late 70s or early 80s.
A donor Suzuki GSXR1100 was used for front forks, wheels, brakes and rear suspension - then the perfect Honda 900cc engine turned up.
Mr Pye did his own cal-culations for ride height and clearances and mocked up the stance in a home-made jig.
Once it looked right he fabricated a lightweight 1.5mm steel tube frame then added a front guard and rear cowling from a Ducati 916.
With the basic structure in place he used styrofoam to mould a tank that gave the bike the right look.
Hours of trial and er-ror went into achieving the perfect proportions, then he wisely made a plug so anoth-er identical tank can be made if necessary.
Meanwhile Engine Prepa-rations in Otorohanga were working on getting some more power out of the Honda.
Mr Pye says originally it was 95hp. He believes the 985cc Honda now makes about 130hp.
The best parts he could afford were used to up the compression and make extra power, and the clutch and gearbox were given an up-grade as well to handle the power.
The CALSCO runs four 33mm Mukuni smooth bore carburettors, then expels the burnt gas through a custom four-into-two exhaust.
Grant McFie made sure
all the electrics worked so the bike would perform at its best and painter Glen Mc-Kenzie put on the awesome colour.
Originally destined to be green and white, the red and silver - with hand painted fl ame job - goes beauti-fully with the black and silver HPC fi nish on the working parts.
Mr Pye has already had
enquiries about building another bike to sell, but he hasn’t committed himself.
He says he wants time to enjoy his unique bike fi rst - plus there’s those other ideas that have been in his head for a while.
And no doubt you been wondering about the name - Mr Pye has three sons to satisfy - Callum, Scott and Brad Ethan Pye.

Local motor home manufacturers Prestige Motor Homes use
Ford’s Transit cab and chas-sis as the vehicle of choice for their custom made, luxury home-away-from-homes.
Managing director Lance Sisson says the Transit is their vehicle of choice for its European chassis design, rear wheel drive and dual rear wheel confi guration and tre-mendous power plant.
He says a long wheel base cab and chassis allows them to build a motor home up to 7.4 metres long and from two to four berth with a range of other features.
The common rail diesel
and six speed box has prov-en highly reliable and motor home enthusiasts marvel at the Transit’s pulling power and road handling.
Mr Sisson says the fi n-ished product comes in with a weight of about 3600kg, but that doesn’t faze the Transit.
In fact one client also tows a small car and can still climb hills in fourth gear.
The cab is comfortable, highly specifi ed and has great access for people of varying mobility.
Mr Sisson says it is surpris-ing how well the Ford Transit motor home handles consid-ering they basically attach a

Transit popular with club
When it comes to travelling in style, Waipa Workingmens Club members are spoilt ac-
cording to courtesy van driver/barman Mike Meagher.
He says the new Ford Transit 12 seat mini bus from Fairview Motors probably drives better than his own car and pa-
trons certainly appreciate its room, com-fort and features.
The Transit has had one seat removed to make access a bit easier for ‘older or less mobile’ travellers - but even so the van is roomy and comfortable. It has an automatic step which slides out when the side door is opened and features air con-
ditioning which is much appreciated.Mr Meagher says the engine has plen-
ty of pulling power and drives well no matter what the load.
Waipa Workingmens Club operate their courtesy service for members six days per week and the van is also avail-able for club outings.

box to the vehicle, but it is great for their business.
He says the base vehicle doesn’t require any modifi cations to brakes or suspension to handle the extra load. In fact with ABS
and hill start assist, they are easier to drive than some standard road vehicles.
Prestige Motor Homes match the colour of their motor home to the standard vehicle colour to
make sure the whole package is of the highest quality.
Mr Sisson says they have had no reliability issues with the Ford Transit which is great for the image of their product.
Ford Transit for every occasionFord’s Transit Van comes in fi ve models: Short
or Long Wheelbase Van, Jumbo Van, Chassis Cab and Bus.
All feature the 2.4 Duratorq TDCi diesel engine which delivers 74kW of power and 285Nm of torque in the SWB model and 103kW of power and 375Nm of torque in all other models. The SWB Van has a fi ve speed manual while all other models have a six speed.
The engine meets latest emission standards and delivers a claimed economy across the range of 10.4l/100km. This gives it a tremendous range
from it’s 80 litre tank.Because Ford knows these are primarily work ve-
hicles all models are equipped with twin batteries. This allows the second battery to power whatever accessory is needed when the engine is switched off, leaving the primary battery in a high state of charge for dependable start and run operation.
The dual rear wheel confi guration is standard on the Chassis Cab and an option on the Jumbo Van.
Ford has added extra reinforced body structure to the new Vans, offering all-round passive protec-
tion. They come standard with a range of sophisti-cated active safety features, such as standard four-wheel disc brakes with ABS (anti-lock brakes) and electronic brake-force distribution to help prevent the rear wheels from locking-up, particu-larly when driving unladen. In addition, every new Ford Transit Van benefi ts from numerous practical safety features, including a driver ’s airbag. Three-point seat belts are fi tted to all seating positions to ensure safety at all times.
Towing capacity ranges from 750kg unbraked up to 3000kg braked for the largest models.

Auto-sparkies together again When Deane Mark started
his auto electrical appren-ticeship with John Framp
Auto Electrical his main teacher was Grant McFie.
Seventeen years on and the pair are again in the same workshop.
When John Framp Auto Electri-cal closed recently, Mr Mark didn’t hesitate to offer Mr McFie a job in his business.
He says Grant is well known and respected in the industry and by the public and his knowledge, skills and contacts are an asset to his business.
Mr McFie was destined to work in the automotive industry and joined Te Awamutu’s then largest auto electrical workshop as soon as he left school.
He left Framps in 1987 to trav-el overseas, and upon his return to New Zealand was offered his old job back.
He left again in 1990 to work as a sales rep for Lucas, but didn’t like the politics of the big company and was soon back in the workshop.
Mr McFie says over the years he has been involved in mechanical and exhaust work, as well as the electrical side of the industry - but it is the lat-ter which he still fi nds challenging and interesting.
He says cars have become more sophisticated which generally means that fi nding and fi xing a problem is more time consuming.
Mr McFie recalls that all cars were
basically similar and usual half-hour jobs would be to remove, overhaul and refi t an alternator.
“Now it takes half-an-hour to fi nd the alternator and specialised parts have to be ordered,” he says - tongue-in-cheek.
But he has enjoyed keeping up with new developments and working on his own solutions to fi xing import-ed Japanese models and the increas-
ing number of European cars on our roads.
He says the job now involves much more use of diagnostic technology and a methodical approach - which he enjoys.
And, by comparison, Deane Mark Auto Electrical offers a modern, light and effi cient workshop environment and a great team which Mr McFie is enjoying being part of.
TOGETHER AGAIN: Deane Mark (left) and Grant McFie.

Annual Cambridge Swapmeet Each November the
annual Cambridge Swapmeet at Cam-

And with a vintage and classic car display - plus the odd hot rod and street ma-chine - it makes for a great day out for the enthusiast.
