201Q2 District Governors Bullen Page 1 January 2020 Official bullen of District 201Q2 District Governor Gary Young Townsville Castle Hill Lions Club Issue 7 : January 2020 Well here we are at the start of a new year so I do hope you all had a relaxing and refreshing me as we do have a lot of work to do before the end of the Lions year. The month of December 2019 saw our district drop 13 members as well as Lion Tom Green from the Townsville Castle Hill Club. Lion Tom passed away on the 28 th December and will be sadly missed by all his friends. My goal for the 2019/2020 Lions year has not changed—that is to get our great District out of transion by the end of June 2020 so we all have a lot of work to do, needing some 100+ new members and keeping the people we have. So maybe in order to obtain our numbers do you all think each of our clubs should revisit what we do, with relevance to our own parcular local areas, as well as re- invenng ourselves in order to gain new members as well as family members? Like we did many years ago when our clubs incorporated projects where families were involved. Revisit when and where clubs would have their meengs so as to bring their families along and make a family day— aſter all we are a big family of Lions. I think something else we can do is invest in the Seasons greetings and welcome back after the holiday break Cerfied Guiding Lions course where we can appoint Lions to clubs needing help. These Lions will not tell clubs what to do, but mainly help and advise. Our clubs also need to be happy clubs, so how do we do this? There a number of ways just ask either your Zone Chairperson and / or your appointed Guiding Lion and/or your District Leadership Team ( DG, 1VDG, 2VDG, District Leadership/Membership Chairpersons). I need your help in making our DISTRICT GREAT again. As you may or may not know, the second week in January will see the Council of Governors meeng convene in Sydney, where the topic of the future of our Lioness Clubs will be discussed. I do not know at this me what the outcome will be, so I ask you all to fully understand that I will do everything I can in support of our some 271 Lionesses. Official bulletin of District 201Q2

District Governor Gary Young Townsville Castle Hill Lions Club

Issue 7 : January 2020

Well here we are at the start of a new year so I do hope you all had a relaxing and refreshing time as we do have a lot of work to do before the end of the Lions year.

The month of December 2019 saw our district drop 13 members as well as Lion Tom Green from the Townsville Castle Hill Club. Lion Tom passed away on the 28th December and will be sadly missed by all his friends.

My goal for the 2019/2020 Lions year has not changed—that is to get our great District out of transition by the end of June 2020 so we all have a lot of work to do, needing some 100+ new members and keeping the people we have.

So maybe in order to obtain our numbers do you all think each of our clubs should revisit what we do, with relevance to our own particular local areas, as well as re-inventing ourselves in order to gain new members as well as family members? Like we did many years ago when our clubs incorporated projects where families were involved. Revisit when and where clubs would have their meetings so as to bring their families along and make a family day— after all we are a big family of Lions.

I think something else we can do is invest in the

Season’s greetings and welcome back after the holiday break

Certified Guiding Lions course where we can appoint Lions to clubs needing help.

As you may or may not know, the second week in January will see the Council of Governors meeting convene in Sydney, where the topic of the future of our Lioness Clubs will be discussed. I do not know at this time what the outcome will be, so I ask you all to fully understand that I will do everything I can in support of our some 271 Lionesses.

Yours in Lionism

Report from Cabinet Secretary Norm

McMullen

Happy New Year to all Lions, Lionesses and Leos

Well…we made it and unless you have 2020 vision…this year will bring plenty of surprises.

John Lennon said it all with his words “And what have you done, another year over, and a new one just begun”. Time for resolutions to be made and we trust followed through, I do hope one of your resolutions focuses on your members, club and community and from there we can continue to grow and build this great organisation.

Our membership during December dropped by 17 as clubs look to sort out members that will remain with us during this next year and those who will not. This is a big impact on our overall membership and the gains we made during the first half of the year, but the good news is we are still 40 up on last year.

Atherton Lions kick back to celebrate the

Christmas break

I am sure November and December were busy months for all clubs with Christmas Raffles and Cake sales, along with meetings, community activities and general Lions activities…and through all this we still found time to spend with our loved ones that have supported our activities all year. Please remember the fire-affected areas that need our help as you consolidate your fundraising efforts.

Lions Youth of the Year will be in full swing as the school holidays draw to a close and the club and zone finals are completed, this is a great Lions initiative that builds on these young adults confidence and skills. I wish all students well as they compete and progress through the different levels, and I look forward to the District Final in April.

Thank you for caring and making a difference and I wish all members well in the coming year.

Atherton Lions and their partners kicked back and enjoyed a good dinner out at the Atherton Golf Club before taking a well-earned break for the festive season.

Malanda Lions Community Bursary

Catherine English, a Year Eleven student from Malanda High School has won the Malanda Lions Community Bursary for 2019. The bursary is awarded each year to a community minded student to further their education after completing Year 12 at Malanda. Lions President Cade Blakesley was pleased to present the bursary at the school’s awards night.

In a community as small as Malanda one can’t help but notice these young men and women helping out in the community, be it raising money for cancer, or a BBQ for the local team or just working at the local shop to get a few dollars together for their next venture.

Three years ago Malanda Lions Club decided to encourage this community spirit by offering a bursary to a Year 11 student for study after Year 12, based on their community activities both within the school and the general community. Being from the bush not all graduates go onto university, with some students doing a trade or going onto TAFE. The club has left the bursary open to these students for any worthwhile occupation.

The bursary this year was worth $1,200 and will increase by $100 each year, to be collected at the end of Year 12 and used towards their chosen field of study. Students are required to complete a written application

setting out their community activities (similar to job application) before fronting the three judges for an interview.

Our head judge, Lion Margaret Kelly said that the standard of all applicants was very high and it was difficult to pick a winner. All students communicated extremely well with a lot of effort going into their applications.

As with most Lions projects there was a lot of effort that went into this project but then the Club and the Malanda community receives a lot back.

Mareeba Lions send school books to PNG

Mareeba Lions responded to a call from the local High School and took delivery of used books, some which were brand new, for transport to Papua New Guinea.

Lions Tom and Lindsay provided the muscle and Lion Rico provided three half-ton pumpkin boxes and arranged transport through Lindsay Transport to their depot in Acacia Ridge.

Northern Suburbs Lions make life a little easier for women and children in crisis

Mothers and children who need to access the Townsville Women's Shelter over the Christmas period will know that someone cares about their welfare, thanks to the Townsville Northern Suburbs Lions Club.

The club has regularly provided toiletry packs for the Centre, but this Christmas, Lion Jan Sullivan suggested we provide some gifts to make their Christmas a little brighter. The gifts include toys for the children and pamper products for the mums.

The Club also donated some Christmas cakes for the staff and clients to share over a cuppa. We hope they enjoy these Christmas treats!

Lions Club of Atherton Mega Christmas Raffle was again a huge success under the leadership of Project Coordinator Supreme Lion Neil Clarke.

Pictured (clockwise from right): Member for Hill Shane Knuth officially kicked off the raffle campaign with Lion Neil Clarke; Lion Neil Clarke with third prize winner David McAuliffe of Tinaroo; with second prize winner J. Carmelo from Peeramon; and with first prize winner Kerry Nichols of Wondecla.

The Australian Chapter of the Lions Stamp Club are still looking for stamps, philatelic products and unwanted collections to include in their project. Every stamp received is sold and every cent coming from the sales is passed on to the Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation. At the Geelong Convention last May the donation was a record $48,000.

New address for Lions Stamp Club

The Stamp Club secretary, Lion Ross Paine (Q4) said that they have noticed a drop off in donations this year and he is urging clubs to keep pushing the project in their areas so they can hopefully match last years total.

Ross has recently changed his address and the new address for clubs in the Q Districts to send their stamps is:

Things to think about ...

What if my dog only brings back the ball because he thinks I like throwing it?

If poison is past its expiry date, is it more poisonous or is it no longer poisonous?

Which letter is silent in the work ‘scent’ - the S or the C?

Do twins ever realise that one of them was unplanned?

Why is the letter W in English called double U? Shouldn’t it be called double V?

Every time you clean something, you just make something else dirty!

The word ‘swims’ upside-down is still ‘swims’.

Intentionally losing a game of rock, paper, scissors is just as hard as trying to win!

Many animals probably need glasses, but nobody knows it.

More signage craziness ...
