ARCHITECT’S Q&A

ANSWERHardwood timber products are highly sustainable if you ensure your supplier is using timber from carefully managed forests. Counter Terror Man a Hit at Counter Terror Expo

We were present at the Counter Terro Expo at London Olympia earlier this year and our stand certainly got people talking. We were asked for our advice on securing a number of different types of public buildings and our MD, Jonathan Goss, delivered a seminar on vehicle incursion protection.

We’ll be back again next year when we’ll have further product developments to announce.

NEWS AND VIEWS FROM THE HOME OF STREET FURNITURE

The UK’s highest profile new visitor attraction, Titanic Belfast, has been safeguarded from hostile vehicle incursion with Counter Terror (CT) Blocks from Townscape Products.

We supplied 47 CT Blocks, which are manufactured in our factory in Nottinghamshire and meet the PAS 68 Standard for vehicle immobilisation. The Blocks were positioned strategically in areas vulnerable to vehicle-based attack and were highly efficient for contractor, Harcourt Construction, to install, each needing only 100mm foundations.

Jonathan Goss, MD of Townscape, said: “Not only have we supplied

a tried and tested security product to protect such a high profile attraction, we also worked to a detailed aesthetic brief, manufacturing the Blocks in a charcoal aggregate, sympathetic to the fabric of the building.

“We also devised integrated timber seating, designed in the style of ice shards, giving the product a practical use for visitors on top of enhanced security.”

BIN

We’re proud to be the first port of call for many architects, contractors and facilities managers looking for street furniture in the UK, but now it seems our reputation is spreading.

We were recently approached to supply 120 Nova bins to Floriade, the world architectural horticulture expo staged in the Netherlands.

The event, in the North-Limburg region of Holland, takes place every ten years and the organisers wanted a range of colourful, secure and self-

contained bins, which could also be used to collect recyclable material.

Sustainability and Environment are two of Floriade’s five key themes this year so we were delighted to be asked to add a touch of Townscape to the work of some of the world’s most famous landscape architects.

Once this year’s expo finishes in October, the Nova bins will be redistributed and put to use in streets and parks across Holland.

LOOKWHEREWE’VE

LovelyStaying on a horticultural theme, we were delighted to help a small Suffolk village leave a lasting legacy from the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Wrentham Parish Council commissioned us to produce commemorative planters bearing Diamond Jubilee gold lettering. The planters, designed to allow both natural and automatic watering were flower-filled and installed in time for the Jubilee celebrations and the passing of the Olympic torch.

We love it when landscape architects want street furniture to really make a statement and create a talking point for local people for many years to come.

As I write this the London Olympic Games has just finished, what a wonderful and successful event and Team GB did us proud with 29 gold medals.

I was particularly interested in following the security fiasco in the lead up to the Games, having recently been asked to give a presentation on public building security at the Counter Terror Expo at London Olympia.

The feedback I got from security professionals at the expo is that there are a vast number of high profile public buildings and stadiums across the UK which fall short of basic anti-terrorist protection. All public building owners have a duty of care to their customers and visitors and I believe street furniture principles can be developed to offer solutions in this area.

We’re working on a range of products to supplement our popular Counter Terror (CT) Blocks which we’ll announce soon. In the meantime, please feel free to give me a call if you need to discuss building perimeter security or street furniture in general.

In the last edition of Townscape Times we featured four of our best-selling ranges of seating. Now we’re focusing on our top four walkways, which are proving popular with public and private sector customers and have been recently installed in a number of schools, colleges, offices and even a prison.

And remember, we don’t just supply these stylish and functional shelters, we’ll also project manage the installation, too.

FOUR OF THE BEST

Here’s a great example of a large retailer taking care of its customers before and after they’ve visited the store. A continuous walkway, with accompanying trolley bays, was manufactured to the customer’s own design. Strong, robust and supplied in corporate colours, the curved arc roof provided softer lines and a relaxing experience for shoppers. Every little helps, as they say.

You don’t always want to walk in a straight line. The Townscape Featherstone walkway was specially commissioned to offer a clean and aesthetic curving form whilst allowing visibility beneath the shelter. The smaller number of support legs at the top of the walkway are designed to offer an improved view, with floating curved purlins that run the length of the structure.

Wet, slippery steps are a thing of the past with the stairway canopy. The stairway canopy can be incorporated into a small retaining wall and the steel galvanised finish is contemporary in style whilst robust to the elements. A favoured choice for schools and colleges to protect students walking between classes and also very popular for transport stations.

The Farleigh design is perfect for linking an existing building to a secondary adjacent building of a different height, tying together different architectural styles. The raised roof profiles are designed to stop debris collecting and the central support posts act as downpipes for the rain water collected by the roofs. It shelters even the smallest distances to give continuous, overhead cover between buildings.
