Transcript of Townie 2013, #1
Alissa Shore is lots of things - a beauty, a brain, a traveler, acaring friend - but she’s also a died-in-the-wool Townie. Here are5 things she missed about Thomasville on her recent trip abroad:
1 I really missed SGD’s pimento cheese!
2 And does Quincy count? My dog does dig Thomasville!
3 Our lovely mossy oak trees...Morocco has very few trees!
4 A southern genteel accent and cruising downtownwith the wind in my hair!
5 Oh and ladies lunch at Liam’s!!
WHISPERS hit the reset button
• Earthlover is moving to South Broad, across fromRelish…a great new space!
• The Chamber is on the hunt for a new director, as Mr.Sims is retiring…
• More talk about a possible pub downtown…
• Shotgun Supper Club will be having a fabulous secondevent in the near future...
• Interested in fine woodworking, dove tails and joinery?A new club is [email protected]
• Dining Around the World at St. Augustine CatholicChurch, January 26… 224-5637...
• A Townie told me we are getting...a yogurt place!!!
YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!This is the time of year to reflect on the year previous and think about what you mightlike to do differently. While New Year’s resolutions may be good for some, I don’t findthem particularly effective or motivating. I’m better with goals and deadlines, and mybest strategy is to name three goals and follow up. A visual reminder - like a check-offchart - is big for me. My chart this year includes finishing my novel, maintaining fitnessgoals and growing the Townie. I make weekly goals and color in the blocks and can seeat a glance what I need to crack the whip on.A new year is a perfect time to press the reset button - on habits, goals and evenrelationships. And always follow the adage: Don’t complain, make change. Did youslide into lazy eating habits last year? Reset with a new cookbook or a new ingredient.Haven’t been walking the dogs as you should? Find a friend to join you or just find afavorite Thomasville vista that you visit each day. {One of mine is a hidden section ofwooded creek off Myrtle.} Are you having conflict with a friend? Resolve to be thebigger person and figure out how to press Reset - no blame, just solutions.Be sure to take at least thirty minutes to look at where you’ve been and thinkstrategically about where you’d like to be - in six months, a year, and five years. Thesegoals can and should change, but it’s very hard to arrive at a chosen spot without a map.Don’t blindly stumble along - reset and revive!
DENTAL CHECKUPDental Health is more important than you realize. A visit to thedentist can help you detect early mouth problems like cavities, cancer and gum disease. AND, nobody likes a yuck mouth!
{MAKE YOUR RESOLUTION INCLUDE BETTER HEALTH HABITS}
Did you know that Metta Day Spa is offering yoga classes? Some of the benefits of yoga are:• Calms and strengthens the nervous system, increasing blood flow to organs and oxygen to your cells.
• Clears mental clutter and allows you to think more clearly.
• Cultivates the spiritual muscles in a way that can make you less anxious, more at peace, and ultimately happier!
Metta offers all levels of yoga, including a class just for beginners. Starting Saturday, January
26, 9-10AM, this class is a donation-only class andwill introduce you towhatmight be the best
new thing for a new year and a new you. —Namaste—

A strong, positive self-image is the best possible preparation for success.—Dr. Joyce Brothers
I think Dr. Brothers offers great advice. We all love feeling strong and successful, beautiful and young. It is human nature…“do your best!” If only it were as easyas instant grits!Do you wake up in the morning and look in the mirror and say, “I look prettygood for 40 something!”, or do you try to not even glance in the mirror? Are youhard on yourself, discrediting your worth based on that new little laugh line?“Waste of time and energy!” as my mother would say.We all have a secret self-image of ourselves. Mine is of a young, slender, athleticwoman. The truth is, I am not so young anymore, not exactly trim and somewhatathletic. How can I possibly have such a good self image when it is not the truth? It is because I keep striving for happiness. I tell myself everything is going to be“just fine.” Scarlett would approve. So what if I am not the slim Jackie Kennedy look-alike? I can darn sure ridehorses and fox hunt like she could. I can put an outfit together that looks classicand elegant, like she could, but for thousands less. I can whip up a mess of sweetpotato biscuits, and I can rock some glitter shadow. I don’t think Jackie cooked, and she probably thought glitter looked cheap. So, what is the secret to having a good self-image? I believe it is keeping yourselfbusy and doing things that make you feel good inside. What does that mean tomost people? Going shopping, or going for a walk? Going shopping will drainyour pocketbook, but a walk through the country will fill up your soul. Choosethe things that enrich your life...like making a sad friend a cake or volunteeringat the pet shelter. Avoid the things that make you feel empty, like competitivefriendships, crabby family members or cleaning the silver.Be grateful! I am grateful for my family, who is FIRMLY planted in the LoneStar state. Those boots aren’t made for walkin’. I love them for their character, tenacity and spirit. I have a photo of my pioneer great-grandfather hanging inmy living room to remind me of his hard work and his strong will, which Isuspect was passed directly down to me.I am also so grateful for this Thomasville life. Grateful for my incredible friends, young and old, who offer a smile at the grocery or a laugh at Sweet Grass on aThursday night. I treasure my relationships, and I work at them. Have youforgotten an old friend this past year? Pick up the phone. Send some flowers, even if they are blue carnations. I am grateful for my health...I can walk, I havemy eyesight and I can still swing a leg up on my big red horse...with the help ofa step stool, of course. Put on your shoes and stroll down your street, dust off yourbike and feel the wind on your face. I am grateful for my home and the menagerieof animals that resides here. My cozy cottage is located a tiny block away from mybest friend of 20 years, and a short stroll away from a catfish dinner. I call myneighbors “friends,” and they call me over for Prosecco.

The Paleo Diet. Real Food. Real Good. The Paleo Diet, also popularly referred to as the caveman diet, is based upon eating whole-some, contemporary foods from the food groups our hunter-gatherer ancestors would havethrived on during the Paleolithic era. Centered on commonly available modern foods, the“contemporary” Paleolithic diet consists mainly of fish, grass-fed pasture raised meats, vegetables, fruit, fungi, roots, and nuts, and EXCLUDES grains, legumes, dairy products, potatoes, refined salt, refined sugar, and processed oils.
Thomasville resident Olivia Adams started her adventures with the Paleo Diet about two monthsago, and it has been a great experience and learning opportunity for her. Her business is smartlynamed LivPaleo. Since she was a child, Olivia has always enjoyed cooking, and when her olderbrother started doing CrossFit he introduced her to the world of the Paleo. Her goal is “to helppeople eat real food and have a healthy and happier life.” Hermenus change weekly, some of herfavorite creations include BBQ pork fried rice, paprika chicken with roasted broccoli and carrots, turkey quiche, spaghetti andmeatballs, scotch eggs, fresh fish with roasted Brussels sprouts andmuch more.
The Townie is always up for trying new things, and so we decided to try out LivPaleo meals forourselves this week. We signed up for five dinners. On Monday, Olivia notified me via e-mail thatour meals were ready for pick-up at the UPS Store, and I went right over to pick them up. Themeals were packaged in simple reusable containers with clear lids, and looked very appetizing. Each one was clearly marked with the name of the entreé, and which day it was to be eaten.Monday was Moroccan Meatballs with a cauliflower rice and sauteéd spinach. The portions weregenerous and tasted delicious. Tuesday was Grilled Balsamic Rosemary Chicken with roastedasparagus, and it had lots of flavor andwas filling. Wednesday was Baked Tilapia with tomato andcucumber relish. The fish was wonderful, flaky and perfectly cooked. Thursday we will have PadThai, and Friday is a Sweet Potato Cottage Pie with venison. We will keep you posted, but I alreadysuspect they are going to be fabulous!
Olivia specializes in the Paleo Diet meals, but she can also create healthful non-Paleo meals byrequest. The weekly Paleo meal program consists of 9 meals, 4 lunches and 5 dinners. Cost is$110 and $100 for cross fit members. TO ORDER YOUR PALEO MEALS: [email protected]

WHERE DID ALL THESEFRIENDS COME FROM?
I’ll be fine and dandy...Lord it’s like a hard candy christmas...I'm barely getting through tomorrow,
But still I wont let sorrow bring me way down...—Dolly Parton
Last year, just days before Christmas, I had a fall from myhorse. Not a “dust-yourself-off-and-get-back-on” fall...moreof a splat. Apparently a splat that was heard ‘round the world.By the time I was driven to the hospital by my special partner-in-crime April, people were showing up.When you have a broken limb, it can be a real downer. Talkof surgery and missed ski trips were swirling around me inmy morphine haze. All I could really think about was myriding boots and how they were going to make it home. As ifout of a bizarre dream, in walks one of my more colorful andenthusiastic friends, Paul. How in the heck did he alreadyhear about this? He was Johnny On The Spot! It sure wasnice to see the smiling face and hear the laugh of anotherfriend. And they just kept coming!I stayed in the hospital for four days. The first day I was there, fifteen friends came to see me. It felt like a cocktail party.Well, at least for me it did...I was on the morphine drip. Theybrought well-wishes, flowers, pajamas and favorite foods. They smiled, laughed, and made me happy. When I left the hospital, the friends followed. With food, smiles, special coffees, and love. It sounds cliché, but yourealize just how important forming and nurturing yourfriendships are when you face bad times. So in good times, don’t take your friends for granted. Be therefor them, even if you “don’t have time.” Send a card whenthey “don’t want to talk about it.” At least they will know thatyou will be there, in good times and in bad.
