A Message From Mayor Michael Alvarez Dear Neighbors, This summer, like so much of 2020, has been different for all of us. I hope, despite all the challenges we are facing, that you and your loved ones have been able to find some moments of fun and relaxation. North Carolina is still under Phase 2 of the reopening plan and will be for several more weeks. In addition to keeping some businesses closed, the order also limits outdoor gatherings, meaning the Town is still unable to hold events. While this is very disappointing, the goal is to keep everyone safe and to get a handle on this virus so we can get back to the events we love. Although we may be unable to hold events right now, there are still plenty of things to do at our parks. The trails and sidewalks at all three parks are open, as well as the tennis courts at Chestnut Square Park. At Crooked Creek Park, you can enjoy the dog park, fitness equipment and the disc golf course. If you do visit one of our parks, stay safe in the heat. Drink plenty of water and find shade when you need it. If you venture out to local businesses or restaurants, please be respectful to the business owners and their employees. A little bit of kindness goes a long way. The requirements they have in place are designed to protect everyone’s health as much as possible. Also, please be patient with our educators as the school year begins. This is uncharted territory. It is impossible to please everyone, but they are doing their best to plan for a situation that is ever-changing. I encourage everyone to do their part to slow the spread of COVID-19. I know how much we all want to get back to normal. • Wash your hands regularly or use hand sanitizer when you don’t have access to soap and water. • Wear a face covering in public, especially places where social distancing is difficult. • Maintain social distancing. • Stay home if you are feeling ill. I truly believe we can beat this if we all work together. In closing, I would like to thank everyone who has reached out to me with concerns for my health. Words cannot describe how grateful I am to all of you. I am doing well and gaining my strength back. I am cautiously optimistic and continue to focus on the future. God bless you all. Respectfully, Mayor Michael Alvarez

A Message From Mayor Michael AlvarezDear Neighbors,

This summer, like so much of 2020, has been different for all of us.

Solid Waste CollectionHelp keep solid waste and recycling pick-up safe and efficient! When setting out your cans for pick-up, make sure:

1. The lid is closed

2. The lid opening faces the street

3. There is no other trash on top of or around the can

4. There is at least 3’ between the cans and any other obstructions

5. All trash is bagged

6. Recycling is NOT bagged The solid waste provider will not pick-up any additional trash outside of the containers. If you are regularly exceeding the amount of trash that will fit in one can, you may contract directly with God Bless the USA at 704.708.5872 for a monthly rental of a second trash can for Indian Trail residents for a reasonable price.

Solid Waste and Recycling: News and Reminders

Indian Trail Division of UCSO Welcomes New Lieutenant The Town would like to welcome Lieutenant Brian Huncke to the Indian Trail Division of the Union County Sheriff’s Office. He officially began his duties on Aug. 1.

Lt. Huncke, a graduate of Sun Valley High School and South Piedmont Community College, is a Union County resident who has lived in Indian Trail for the last 14 years. He started with the Union County Sheriff’s Office in 1997. Stormwater Update

COVID-19: Help Slow the Spread

Stormwater FeesFunding for stormwater management within the Town limits comes from the stormwater utility fee included on your yearly tax statement. This stormwater fee is billed and collected by the Town.

How Are Stormwater Fees Determined? The stormwater fee is based on the amount of impervious (hard) surface area on a property

and the cost of providing stormwater services.

Residential FeesSingle-family households pay on a two-tier system. If your property has less than 2,060 square feet of impervious area, you are charged $53.10 per year. If your property has more than 2,060 square feet, then you are charged $63.60 per year.

Commercial (Business-type) FeesFor a commercial development, the stormwater fee is based on the amount of impervious (hard) surface area on a property and the cost of providing stormwater services.

ERU (Equivalent Residential Unit) is the median of impervious area on single-family developed land in Town. ERU = 2,060 sq. ft.

If you have questions about your stormwater utility bill, please call the Indian Trail Engineering Department at 704.821.5401.

Top 10 Ways You Can Protect the Town’s Waterways

1. Never throw items in a storm drain, drainage ditch, or creek.

2. Clean up after your pets.

3. Practice good lawn care. (Don’t over fertilize.)

4. Don’t dump lawn clippings into streets, storm drains, and drainage ditches. Try to keep clippings on the lawn as a natural fertilizer.

5. Put proper waste in the trash.

6. Wash your car in grass or at a commercial car wash.

7. Recycle used auto fluids at an auto store.

8. Dispose of chemicals, like paint and pesticides, at approved Hazardous Dump Locations.

9. Check your vehicle for leaks and repair them.

10. Get the WORD OUT to your neighbors!

On Wednesday, Aug. 5, Governor Roy Cooper announced North Carolina will remain in Phase 2, under the Safer at Home Order, until Sept. 11 at 5 p.m.

In order to move into Phase 3, North Carolina residents must work together to slow the spread of COVID-19 so we can reduce the number of cases and hospitalizations across the state. When you are out in public, please continue to practice the 3Ws:

• Wear a cloth covering over your nose and mouth. • Wait six feet apart and avoid close contact with those outside of your household. • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are unavailable, use hand sanitizer.

Symptoms and TestingAccording to the CDC, COVID-19 can cause a wide-range of symptoms, including:

• Fever or chills• Cough• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing• Fatigue• Muscle or body aches• Headache• New loss of taste or smell• Sore throat• Congestion or runny nose• Nausea or vomiting• Diarrhea

If you think you have COVID-19, find a testing location near you by visiting https://covid19.ncd-hhs.gov/about-covid-19/testing/find-my-testing-place.

Parks & RecreationVeterans Day CeremonyOn Wednesday, Nov. 11, the Town of Indian Trail, in partnership with the James B. Crump VFW Post 2423 and American Legion Post 458, will be hosting a Veterans Day Ceremony. Due to COVID-19, this year’s ceremony will be held virtually. Additional details to come. Please mark your calendars and help Indian Trail honor those who have served our country.

Town EventsAfter careful consideration and continued monitoring of the COVID-19 situation, the Town of Indian Trail has made the difficult decision to cancel all Town-related events through Dec. 1. At this time, the Town still plans to hold the Christmas Parade scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 6. With the increase in case numbers and the Governor’s limit on mass gatherings, we felt this was the best way to proceed.

As a Town, there is nothing we enjoy more than bringing our residents together, whether it’s for a small concert in the park, a community-wide festival, or something in between. It saddens us to make this call, but the well-being of our residents and their families takes priority.

While we know this is disappointing, we appreciate your support and understanding. We hope that 2021 will be filled with community events, and we can’t wait to see you then!
