A Letter to the Congregation from the Session of WPC Dear Friends, In mid-March our denomination, the Presbyterian Church (USA), received media attention for the ratification of an amendment to our constitution regarding marriage. This letter aims to help you understand the denomination’s action, its effect on our congregation, and the response that we, the Session, are undertaking. The PC(USA) Action. Last summer, the national assembly of our church met and made two actions regarding same-sex marriage:

The first action was a ruling that applies to churches and teaching elders (pastors) only in states where same-sex marriage is legal. It allows sessions to permit or to prohibit same-sex marriage ceremonies in their church facilities, and it allows pastors to determine whether or not they will officiate same-sex marriage ceremonies.

The second action was an amendment to the marriage section of the Directory for Worship in our constitution. This amendment describes marriage as “…a unique commitment between two people, traditionally a man and a woman….” All amendments to the constitution must be ratified by a simple majority of presbyteries. This simple majority was reached in mid-March and caused the recent media attention to the subject.

A very helpful FAQ sheet, prepared by the Office of the General Assembly, is available in our church office or at http://oga.pcusa.org/site_media/media/uploads/oga/pdf/advisory_opinion_marriage_passage.

pdf. Its Effect on our Congregation. Because same-sex marriage is not legal in the state of Ohio, these actions currently have no effect in our congregation: however, we all know that Ohio law is soon to be reviewed by the Supreme Court. If same-sex marriage becomes legal in our state, then the Session will need to determine under what circumstances, if at all, same-sex marriage ceremonies could be performed at WPC. Completely independent of the Session’s decision, any pastor serving WPC would also need to determine under what circumstances, if at all, to officiate such ceremonies. This is a very rare situation for Presbyterian congregations, in which the General Assembly is saying, essentially, that a Session may faithfully discern God’s will in two directions. That may seem frustrating, yet it is actually showing respect for Presbyterians in the minority of this debate. Our constitution calls for a dedication to forbearance out of the belief that “there are truths and forms with respect to which men [and women] of good characters and principles may differ. And in all these we think it the duty both of private Christians and societies to exercise mutual forbearance toward each other” [PC(USA) Constitution, F-3.0105]. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Response of the Session. We opened the discussion on this topic at the March 2nd Session meeting and discussed it more thoroughly at our meeting on April 13th. We have made no decisions yet regarding church policy on same-sex marriage. We believe this is an important time for our congregation to become informed and—respectfully and prayerfully—to seek together God’s will for our church. This letter is a first step at providing information. The Adult Education Committee, chaired by Ruling Elder Kathy Cable, will be scheduling a 6-Session Study on Marriage, as an opportunity for us to open our hearts and minds to one another and to God’s leading. We believe this course will be a significant opportunity for us to practice a Christian way of addressing controversial issues, and to seek to show respect for one another, every one. Some of us—perhaps many of us—have clear and differing convictions on this issue, yet God asks us to remain together as a community of faith despite our differences. As it is written in the Letter to the Ephesians, make every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3). Please watch for further information on the upcoming Marriage Study and plan to take part. And please keep us in your prayers, that we may trust God’s leading to guide our faithfulness to Christ. Yours in Christ’s service,

The Session of Worthington Presbyterian Church

In addition to the support of our regular food and service volunteers, we received extra spaghetti, sauce and meatballs from the Senior High Youth. The members of the Evening Circle of Grace also contributed by donating many boxes of diapers, which are always needed at the Y Family Center. Our next dinner hosting is Tuesday, May 5. Please see the Mission pages of the WPC website for more information. Thanks to all the volunteers who purchased or served food and the staff members who support this program year-round.

WORTHINGTON PRESBYTERIAN PRESCHOOL

Since returning to school after Spring Break our students have been busy! We enjoyed the nice weather by taking a walking field trip to the Worthington Fire Department. Thank you to all of the parents that went with us. The Goldfish Swim School visited each class and presented a fun and educational program to reinforce water safety with the children. May brings more field trips to Graeter’s ice cream, Evening Street Elementary School for a tour of a kindergarten class, and one of our favorites – Kidsapalooza at Thomas Worthington High School. A great big “Thank You” to Richard Pereksta, Scout Troop 365 and their parents. They spent an evening during their Spring Break raking, leveling and fluffing our playground mulch.

On Thursday, May 7, Mary Martha and Christian Life Circle will have a fellowship brunch, 10:30 a.m. at First Watch in Worthington Square Shopping Mall. OPERATION BUCKEYE

On Wednesday, May 27, Presbyterian Women United will be presenting a program by Jim Caronis, President of Operation Buckeye. Mr. Caronis will talk about the history of the organization and how they go about putting these packages together. Our church will be collecting various items to donate to this program. The meeting will be held in the Fellowship Hall at 1:00 p.m. beginning with a light dessert. Everyone is invited to attend. Please sign up outside the Fellowship Hall or in the office.

GREATER COLUMBUS HANDBELL RINGS

The Celebration Ringers will be participating in the annual Greater Columbus Handbell Ring at New Albany High School on Sunday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. This concert will feature a massed ring of eleven handbell choirs from this area. MOTHER’S DAY HONORARIA & MEMORIAL

On Mother’s Day, May 10, we will continue the tradition of honoring or memorializing our mothers through a good will offering. We will include a print out of all those who are being honored or remembered in the Sunday bulletin. The Ministry of Mission will earmark these donations to support one of our family oriented missions, COMPASS. Funds will be matched through Broad Street Presbyterian, where COMPASS is housed. COMPASS is committed to preventing homelessness of offering emergency assistance and working directly with individuals to increase their self-sufficiency through the Hand Up Program. If you would like to honor or memorialize a loved one, please make a contribution, complete the attached form, and mail or drop off your request to the church office before Monday, May 4.
