Director’s Message Dear Residents, Happy Summer, and what a beautiful one it is so far ! We have been very busy here in the last month. The Men’s Club is flourishing; Elder Wisdom is thriving; the Lower Level is newly painted; the brick stabili-zation is moving at record speed; the Ruth Carr Chorus performances were wonderful; and, the Health Fair was the best we have ever seen. WOW ! I can tell you that there will be more of the same in July. Add to the calendar of events this month will be the kick off of the “Make a Difference Contest”. Watch your mailboxes for details. Please also watch your mail for the “Resident Satisfaction Survey”. This sur-vey should arrive sometime in the beginning of July. Please, Please, Please complete this survey. Last year Asbury Tower was ranked very low in comparison to the other PHS communities. You and I both know that this is not true. We are alive and thriving with the best staff, programs and vision of all the other communities. And let’s not forget about our location. Asbury Tower has the best location of all the communities in the entire State of New Jersey. At the bottom of the survey there is also an area where you can write your comments. I encourage each of you to put into words how you feel about PHS, Asbury Tower, and any individual you feel should be recognized. It is most important to Asbury Tower that we get 100% response to this sur-vey. Last year, only about 20% of the Residents responded. Therefore, if you should need assistance or should have any questions, please feel free to ask any Manager and, as you know, my door is always open. Finally, I would like to remind you all that if you are outside to wear sun-screen and a hat. If you are inside, you are always welcome to come down to the lounges and enjoy the new air conditioning. Whether inside or out make sure you continue to drink lots of water as during the summer you can become dehydrated very quickly. Susan

The President’s Corner

Hi Folks! July is here!! And the fireworks, parades and razzle-dazzle that goes with the official “Fourth of July” start of summer at the Jersey Shore. This year you certainly are enjoying the boardwalk and beach. It should be exciting for all of us as the temperature rises and sunshine brings us out to delight in the warmest season on the coast. The June Birthday Party was a big success with Ted O’Connell at the piano playing all our favorite old time songs and ending the festivities with patriotic music as is his style. The Ruth Carr Chorus finished for the Spring Season with its last tunes at Frances Asbury Manor. The choristers were de-lighted to have Susan Bruncati and Daphney Simpson in the audience. Elder Wisdom Forum Leads July 4th Parade — Dispelling the Myths About Age

Deputy Mayor Jimmy Bruno’s 2007 4th of July Parade was the best yet. But a picture is definitely worth a thousand words. Henry Vaccaro his son, Henry Jr., and right-hand man Preston couldn’t have been more helpful in donating the flatbed with cab and a driver and all the labor of attaching A.T.’s patio tables and chairs! Everyone rode safe and sound thanks to those angels. Riders included other seniors in the community and staffers from Asbury Park’s Housing Authority, Annette Barksdale, Toisan Holmes and social services di-rector Sheila Rollin, who gave so much of their time and budget to help make our float — the very first float in the parade! — a huge success! You’ll notice we all wore our new Elder Wisdom Forum t-shirts from John at Ad-Pro, which are available for sale. Please call Maureen at 732-988-9292. If you’re not a t-shirt wearer, they make excellent gifts. All ages need to hear our message: “Old age is a privilege not a sentence!” Elder Wisdom meets this month on July 20th, at 1 pm, in the lounge. Our special guest is novelist Harry L. Bernstein (The Invisible Wall-Random House, 2007), who’ll tell us how it feels to publish your first novel at 94! Bragging Rites— Our very own Daphney Simpson’s son, Nathaniel, will have his photogra-phy presented in a gala reception at the Pollack Theater Gallery of Mon-mouth University, Thursday, July 12th, from 7—9 PM. Nathaniel’s work is part of the highly acclaimed Photo Literacy Project at Bradley Elementary School, the invention of Project Director, John Meyerhofer. The show con-tinues through July 31st. In the small English village where Harry Bernstein grew up, Jews lived on one side of the lane and Christians on the other, staring each other down every day. In addition to crushing poverty Harry and his neighbors fought the cruel jokes and slurs that accompany religious hatred; a hatred even two world wars couldn’t eradicate. Then Harry grew up and fought another kind of battle, the one every-one who ever aspired to write professionally has had to win—the battle to get into print. This year at the age of 96, Harry finally saw a novel of his published—The Invisible Wall [Random House, 2007]. Harry’s second novel comes out in Spring 2008; and he’s working on another. He’s been asked to speak at the prestigious 92nd St. Y, in NYC, August 13th. But first, he’d like us to hear what he’s going to say. Meet Harry here in the lounge, Friday, July 20th at 1 PM.

Staffers from Jersey Shore Medical Center/Meridian Health Services provided screenings for bone density, cholesterol, and body fat!! Dr. Sonia Rijh-Singhani, also with JSMC, introduced the breakfast audience to the benefits of having a geriatrician for people over 60. Test results must be in-terpreted differently for a 65 year-old than for a 75 year-old; a bad blood pres-sure for a 40 year-old may be normal for an 80 year-old; prescriptions have to take into account differences in patients from one decade to the next. Her advice: Do some exercise every day. Disabilities? Move whatever you can. Dr. Sonia’s of-fice number is 732-851-5546.

The Night I Stumped Merv Griffin’s Band By Mary Pennell Several years ago, Bob and I were sent free tickets to see a musical show at the Resorts Casino Theater in Atlantic City. Every seat was filled, including the orchestra pit; and the show was wonderful! After the performance, Merv Griffin came out—dressed to the nine’s in a white suit and pink shirt — to thank the au-dience for coming and to introduce his lady friend, Ava Gabor and her mother, who were draped in shimmering white satin gowns with pink accents. Merv was then the owner of the Resorts Casino. He played the piano for awhile; and after he asked if anyone in the audience could stump the band by requesting a song they won’t know. No one in the audience raised a hand, but I finally did. A man came rushing down the aisle with a microphone and asked me to name the song. I said, “Marezy Doats ’n Doesy Doats”... What? they asked. They tried, but they just never heard of it. So I sang it: “Marezy doats and dosey doats and little lambs eat ivy; a kid’ll eat ivy, too, wouldn’t you? If the words sound queer and funny to your ear; a little bit jumpy and jivey; it’s just marezy doats and doesey doats and little lambs eat ivy.” The band didn’t know it. I won!!! I got wonderful applause and two t-shirts! What a night! I was a soloist in a packed theater house in a casino in Atlantic City!! Now, top that!! Ed. Fugitive Livens River Boat Outing We were told to look for a laughing fugitive with gray hair

As you can see here, she wasn’t too happy to be found out!!

But soon she was plotting with fellow conspirators. They say the fugitive has several mansions and a few yachts for getting away fast!! And she’s been a powerful influence on others of her ilk!!

Update on Canada Trip The resort hotel that we’ve been negotiating with for a trip to Montreal and Quebec has had a fire. The renovations are scheduled to be completed by December. The hotel is already taking reservations for the new year. The bus fee has been reduced to $5,000 from $5,500. And, we’ve been talking to the Housing Authority about combining sen-iors from their communities to fill the bus. When we get con-firmations, we’ll refigure the trip cost and post it.
