Peter North, Senior Manager - Programme Delivery (Sustainable

Energy) Development & Environment Greater London Authority

Peter North holds a BSc in Engineering and an MSc in Building Services Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a Chartered Engineer.

His professional career has been in the energy sector in design, development and implementation of both the private and public sector energy projects. His technology experience ranges from nuclear and fossil fuels, to combined heat and power, district heating and renewables including waste. Peter’s work has involved the commercial development of energy projects combining engineering with commercial structuring and financing.

Peter is currently a Senior Manager – Programme Delivery (Sustainable Energy), with the Greater London Authority. His main role is supporting both the public and private sector to develop and deliver larger-scale urban heat network projects. Peter is becoming increasingly involved in the research, policy development and planning of large-scale heat networks and supporting the innovative application of decentralised energy technology to heat networks.

Syed Ahmed, Independent Energy and Climate Policy

Advisor

Syed has close to 20 years working in the sustainable energy industry, in

a wide variety of roles and organisations ranging from Friends of the

Earth, the Combined Heat and Power Association, the Greater

London Authority, Arup, and DECC. Syed established Energy for

London (www.energyforlondon.org), an independent think tank

supporting London's progress to becoming a low-carbon city.

Lucy has been the manager of Islington Energy Services since 2000. Responsible for implementing complex and challenging carbon-saving delivery projects, such as decentralised energy schemes, she initiated and has overseen the development of the council’s district heating network programme, including the construction of the Bunhill Heat and Power network. A widely-respected engineer, she is frequently asked to present at industry events.

Prior to working at Islington, Lucy studied for a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering at Manchester University. She worked as an engineer at United Glass before gaining an MSc in European Environmental Policy and Regulation. In 1994 she joined the Energy Team in Islington, becoming manager in 2000. In 2005 she was seconded to the Greater London Assembly as their Principal Energy Policy Officer for two years, before returning to Islington.

Vimal is a chartered mechanical engineer who’s background in utilities extends over 15 years beginning in South African utility-scale coal-fired power generation. Since moving to the UK, Vimal has worked within the decentralised energy sector for installer & operators, design consultancies and DBFO organisations. In his current role as Head of Utilities at Barratt London, Vimal is responsible for providing due diligence, contractual negotiation, design & delivery reviews and escalation/trouble shooting for all utilities and services to Barratt London sites through all phases of development from land acquisition, planning, design through to delivery and occupation.

Toby has had a wide ranging career from land mine clearance to finance at the Bank of New York Mellon. At the Carbon Census he was head of operations. He then left to lead Pinnacle Power.

Toby has extensive experience in delivering district energy networks and has worked on projects from 100kW to 87 MW of generation plant. He focuses on working with everyone from councils to developers to power generation assets to deliver the most innovative solution possible both financially and practically.

Ian Manders is organiser of the seminar. Ian is the UK Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy Advisor at the Danish Embassy in London. Previously, he was responsible for the administration of the UK Green Deal Oversight Body and the Microgeneration Certification Scheme.

As deputy director of CHPA, Ian negotiated the industry “Big Offer” to DECC, which provided for the creation of an independent domestic heat customer protection scheme (now the Heat Trust) and standards for the industry (now the CIBSE-ADE code of practice). In return the Government would support local authority sponsorship of district heating schemes (this became the Heat Networks Development Unit, or HNDU).

Ian has also served as a front-bench local authority councillor for 14 years in a London Borough.
