Master Students of Planning, Architecture, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Transportation, Tourism Planning, Development Studies and Civil and Environmental Engineering are invited to collaborate in the 5th Joint Studio of Towards a Resilient City held in Bandung, 19-28 March 2020.

The studio aims at better understanding of the dynamics of self-organized urban planning and design developed in cities of developing countries and its implications on a wider urban system in the city.

1. INTRODUCTION

The City and Regional Planning Program, School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development(SAPPD), ITB, in collaboration with Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning (SSADP), theUniversity of Sydney invites Master Students of Planning, Architecture, Urban Design, LandscapeArchitecture, Transportation, Tourism Planning, Development Studies and Civil and EnvironmentalEngineering to collaborate in 5th Joint Studio of Towards a Resilient City held in Bandung, 19-28 March2020.The Joint Studio aims at better understanding of the dynamics of self-organized urban planning anddesign developed in cities of developing countries and its implications on a wider urban system in thecity. Furthermore, the Joint Studio is developed to provide broader and deeper understanding ofprocesses of informal urbanism evolving in developing countries by exploring different actors andcommunities developing urban resilience at different levels. It is designed to support students whointend to work at an international level and to enhance the internationalization of Indonesian planningand design approaches. This year, the Joint Studio will be held at SAPPD, Institut Teknologi Bandung,on 19-28 March 2020, with a case study of Bandung, Indonesia.The objectives of the studio is to better understand:a. Key literature and related formal policies and strategies regarding social justice, right to city, and

urban resilience.b. Methods applied in analyzing key determinants of urban resilience in terms of physical, social and

economic development, disaster mitigation and prevention in the informal city.c. Development implications in improving quality of life in the informal city.d. Multi-disciplinary plans and designs to enhance and strengthen urban resilience in the informal

city.

The Joint Studio has been globally recognized as among 150 World Urban Solutions by the UN Habitat in 2016.

2. STUDIO STRUCTUREThe studio comprises five main parts including:a. Two tutorials allocated prior the studio and during the preparation of public exhibition.b. Lectures by speakers with national and international backgrounds.c. Fieldwork, located in Bandung, Indonesia.d. Group presentation at School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development, Institut Teknologi

Bandung.e. Public Exhibition at Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning, the University of Sydney

and visit to the Greater Sydney Commission.

3. BENEFITSParticipants will get the opportunity to work together with Master Students of SSADP, the University ofSydney during the studio, exhibit their work at the Joint Studio-Exhibition at the University of Sydney,visiting the Greater Sydney Commission and publish their studio work. Importantly, students interestedto obtain 4 credit points by participating in the studio, may apply for PL5205 Planning Studio at SAPPD,ITB or other subjects as appointed by participating programs.

All participants will receive a certificate of participation after completing the studio. The results of theJoint Studio will be published in a book including student work from involved universities as well aspapers by key academics and will be prepared after public exhibition at the University of Sydney.
