    EDUCATION POLICY

    Improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderstudents is very high on the l is t of current national educationpriorities, says DAVID McCRAE.

    The programs operating under the tideof the Indigenous Education StrategicInitiatives Program (IESIP) are well-established and, in particular,ATAS, the tutoringscheme for secondary students, seems to behaving a significant impact . The generaltrends in performance are up, especially inthe VET sector. The MCEETYA Taskforce onIndigenous Education has done usefulwork, if at a fairly elevated level, in mappingou t future directions, and several one-offefforts have helped build a platform forfurther action,

    Between late 2000 and mid 2001, nearly1,200 Australian school principals - morethan ten per cent of the total of principals attended the APAPDC's Commonwealthfunded 'Dare to Lead' forums. Theseproduced a startlingly powerful responsefrom participants. One of the things theyheard about was what has become known asthe What Works? projects, eighty-threeStrategic Results Projects (SRPs) workingwith more than 3,800Aboriginal and TorresStrait Islander students, aged from three toover sixty in widely varied locations.
