H i Members! This year has been very busy with our main focus on our membership drive which has
produced outstanding results with 272 new members to date. On behalf of our Committee we welcome all our new members into our Association. We are programming new Tournaments and Social days to cater for all new and old members, so please check the website for details and come along and catch up with old friends as well as making new friendships. All players are graded to suit their ability, so it doesn't matter what standard you are, there will be an event to suit you. If any current members have friends that they play with, then encourage them to join as they are automatically covered immediately by TNSW Insurance. Don't forget every time you sign up a new member your name goes into a draw to win a Wilson racquet and bag which will be drawn at our Annual General Meeting. Our State Championships are held on the long week end in October and hopefully all our Representative players will have returned from overseas triumphant and in time to participate. We still require sponsors for our State Titles, so if anyone is interested please get in touch with us. The Teams’ Carnival is in Hobart next January and is creating a lot of interest, so please forward your intention of participating to Robyn our Secretary. All players who have not already formed a team and wish to play will be placed in a team to suit their age and ability. Make the most of the opportunity to play in Hobart as it is only held there every 7 years. All new members please consider this as we would welcome your participation. I would like to wish our Super Seniors the best of luck while overseas, and may they all have a safe and enjoyable trip. Mick Bruton

Cessnock once again hosted a successful winter tournament, and were blessed with three fine days after many weekends of cold wet weather. 128 satisfied players enjoyed the running of the events. There were 23 men in Singles events, which have become very popular, with some very close matches. Only 8 ladies contested 2 events. There were quite a few new players and it was good to see the “regulars” who return each year to enjoy the competition. There were unfortunate withdrawals due to winter “bugs” – but both players and visitors who made it vowed to return next year to enjoy the tennis and the hospitality of the Cessnock Club. Cessnock has earned a good reputation under the leadership of Irene Crowley with her faithful band of volunteers.

T he Tri-State challenge
has been an annual
event in Mildura,
between the three
states, NSW, VIC and SA,
played immediately after the
knockout tournament which
goes from Sunday to Tuesday in
Melbourne Cup Week.
Over the years there have been
more than enough players to fill
the teams, many of whom were
from the Coach, but there has
been a decline, and it is no
longer possible to have 16 men
and 16 women willing to play.
Sadly, we see this as a sign of
the times!
We are hoping, that with many
new members enlisted, it can
be resurrected in 2014.

J im Willet’s reflections…. From one Life member to another: “goodbye dear mate, a better friend, no man could ask for.” Jim met Len’s wife Pat, known as Patricia, when she was about 11 years old. He remembers that she used to visit a school friend just a few doors up from his place in Lakemba. That was 75 years ago. During that
time, they became firm friends, as Pat married Len, and was a lifelong friend of a workmate, Jim’s late wife Norma. Jim met Len in his early twenties and their friendship lasted 66 years. In that time they never had a cross word, although in jest they would try to outdo each other in an exchange of “quips” – a battle which Jim admitted, he inevitably lost. Len was known to assess Jim’s ability in Singles, comparing him to Mark Philippoussis. In the same breath he would add, “when you are on your game, no one can beat you – it’s a pity it doesn’t happen too often.” Len was a remarkably good organiser. He was Tournament Director for the National Veterans’ Championships when they were held in Sydney. A mammoth task, considering the number and spread of tennis courts throughout the metropolitan area of Sydney. The National President Major General Bob Hay asserted that this feat of Len’s would never be matched. Len worked alongside Don Rocavert to create the Vets as we know it today – for players who love the game and are over 35. (Back then it was over 40!) The Pearson family operated a business with eventually 7 tennis courts, which started out as 3, plus squash courts and a gym. Much of the foundation work in building the first 3 courts was done by Len, with a “little bit of help” from his friends. Jim tried to teach Len how to handle bricks without cutting your hands to shreds, but he wouldn’t learn and would end up playing tennis with band aids all over his hands! Len Pearson was much loved by Pat, his 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. His loving nature and his dry wit will be sadly missed by them all.

TOURNAMENTS etc FOR 2014
Attention: Club Secretaries
T ennis Seniors NSW is sending out the Application Form for 2014 tournaments
in the next few days. The applications are due to be sent back to the Secretary
by Friday October 11.
These can be either sent by return email or posted to Tennis Seniors NSW, PO
Box 4803, North Rocks, 2151
Those who have been happy with their annual dates, will most likely be approved, while
if there are any clubs out there who would like to secure a weekend, need to select a
“free” weekend by referring to the 2013 Calendar which is on our website.
We may be able to cater for one or two more tournaments for Teams’ competition - either
for one day or two. It seems to be a popular format, and we encourage Clubs to consider
holding such an event.
Social days are being offered as well, either on Thursdays, Fridays or Sundays! It’s a
great way to introduce new members to Seniors.

U nder perfect conditions the Hallidays Point Retirement Village Forster Seniors Tennis Tournament went off without a hitch with both players and volunteers happy with their weekend. Tournament director Bob Gorman was satisfied with his swan
song and he was even able to enjoy some time on court himself, to replace an injured Doug Kessell, playing with the “young” Terry McNaughton, (his runner), and they had a win! Many pools in some age groups allowed very even tennis in the Doubles, after one or two players had easy wins in their Singles groups caused by some rearranging. Close to 300 players enjoyed perfect winter sunshine, and cloudless skies. Excellent viewing from the veranda was noted during the Men’s 35 doubles – “are we at Forster, or is this the Aussie Open?” Not to mention how wonderful it was to see the women out there too, blasting
balls back and forth over the net. One of the Ladies pairs was indeed a “blast from the past” as they were partners when they were Under-14! Robyn R and Helen H, friends since age 12, played in the 60+ and just like old times - they WON! The Forster Tennis Club will be ready with new administrators and volunteers next year and looks forward to seeing many familiar and new faces come to play. SNIPPETS: Who was it that withdrew from the Mixed, and went shopping instead? It would have been cheaper for him to have played tennis! (He spent heaps on new clothes and shouted the ladies lunch.) One lady (Thelma) lost her footing in the second set of her doubles with a new member (Louise) and went sprawling on court 5, tearing a hamstring. Louise didn’t mind almost being “out of the tournament” on her first day. She luckily teamed up with another lady the next day, who had lost her partner in a similar manner, and they took out the winner’s prize. Acknowledgement to June Southwell for the “bones” of this report! RC

The teams’ event on the June long weekend was very successful this year,
with a total of 14 teams competing. The weather tried to hold us back on the
first day, but after a slight delay all matches were underway and for the
remainder of the weekend we had perfect tennis conditions. The standard of
tennis was terrific and it was fabulous to see people being both competitive
and friendly in their matches.
It was wonderful to see many familiar faces back at Newcastle enjoying their
tennis. We also had some new members and a couple of interstate players,
playing for the first time.
Over the weekend there were a few injuries. We wish all those players a
speedy recovery and hope to see you back on the court soon. Noel Flanagan
wishes to thank the female players who came to his aid on the court when he
injured his ankle. Their quick thinking and helpful assistance was greatly
appreciated. That was Donna and two other wonderful young women who
came to his aid with ice and glad wrap.
The results were very close in all divisions, with as little as 1 point separating
some teams. Congratulations to the winning teams:
Unmatched: Craig Edwards, Brad Middleton, Richard Nicholls, Leanne
Swaysland, Narelle Follington, Stephanie Asprey, Jo Walter
New Englanders: Barry Wilson, Rob Haling, Don Edmonds, Margaret Wayte,
Judy Cousins
Limp Sticks: Neale McDonald, Gary Robertson, Greg Farrell, Maureen
Bartels, Karen Warburton, Kim Bullock
Thanks to Robyn and Arthur for the preliminary work and organisation of the
event before going on their holiday (next year I hope you plan your holidays a
little better!) Also thanks to Craig and Maureen for making sure that the
weekend ran smoothly.
We hope to see you all again next year...and maybe you could
recruit a few more new players!

AT Carillon City Tennis Club
Remember Doug Vickery - from the Eastern Suburbs? I rang him
what seems like a short time ago to wish him a Happy 90th
Birthday. On speaking with his grand daughter Lorraine Lee, I
discovered that he is now 97! He is alive and well at a Nursing
Home on the Central Coast, close to his daughter. Well done Doug -
we hope to see you at your 100th!
Allan Kendall is unfortunately in poor health, and has arranged for
himself to be cared for in a Nursing Home. We wish him well.
Beth Lown is also in care at Carlingford. Peg Hoysted and I visited
Beth in May, and she is quite well, although her short-term memory
is failing somewhat. We had a lovely visit with her, and Beth was
very interested in the list of representative players, along with some
of the pictures from our National Championships in Perth. She
actually remembered the times she represented Australia in
overseas teams herself!
Don Ginns, a very loyal, active member for many years has sold his
house and moved into a lovely new establishment in Sylvania. He
told me the other day when I rang that it is very nice, but having
one room is a huge difference to living in his home in Gymea with
water views.
Charles Price has joined the “new knee club.” He is recuperating in
a Rehab hospital in Strathfield, and progressing well.
Best wishes to Margaret Trusty who has had several operations
recently for breast cancer, and is waiting to discover whether she
has to undertake radiation therapy.
Welcome to Ken Taylor who is back in the winners’ circle after a
win in the 75 Singles in Forster. Ken has overcome many setbacks
including his latest treatment on his eyes.
Muswellbrook’s Tournament Director, Val Angel has also had
treatment for problems with her vision. “Which ball do I hit?” We
wish you well, Val, and hope you will be able to pick the right ball
when you come to Hobart!
Several of our Super Seniors are having various body parts repaired
or replaced and we wish them well. Col Armstrong will be out for
many months as a result of a back operation, and John O’Brien had
to forego his overseas representation while he recovers from having
a hip replacement.
John Whittaker has had a couple of trips to hospital, which have
curtailed his Cherrybrook Tennis Club social tennis for a number of
weeks.
A friendly cheerio to Anne and John Shepherd. John has been
admitted into care at Beecroft, due to advancing Motor Neurone
disease. We want John to know that his friends in Tennis Seniors
are missing him, and wishing him well.
Julie Pratt is secretly getting back into form, with her Physical
trainer at Castle Hill – she runs around the Golf course ahead of
Don most mornings. He hasn’t caught her yet! Plus, she’s hitting
lots of tennis balls in her spare time.
Popular member and Vice President of TSA Enid Besant-Ryan is
joining the 230,000-odd Australians who are having a hip
replacement. Enid’s operation is on Wed 28th, in Canberra. She’ll be
back! ...R Castle
F rom Greg Scott..All of the
great events from last year
are on again, but we have
changed the age groupings
slightly for variation.
At the request of some lovers of
singles play, we have included for the
first time, a singles event for men and
for women on the Sunday afternoon of
the tournament (for those who can't
get away from work to play on Friday).
The events will be grouped into A
Grade, B Grade and C Grade and will be
round robin format with 5 players in
each group. Age will not be taken into
account, only standard of play. So if you
are just getting into the swing of
singles, this is your chance to play
against people of your own standard.
For those attending our Saturday night
dinner dance, we are happy to advise
that our popular DJ Steve will be
returning to play all of your favourite
songs and some great dance music.
Bookings are essential as we are limited
to 80 guests - so pay with your entry!
Accommodation is at a premium, so

off, but the time will fly,
and it seems we are going
to have a huge
representation. Older
members are returning,
and we have several new
member teams as well.
Names must be in please,
by October 7, as we have
to communicate with the
other states, before
selections are complete!
Our big “push” is to ensure
that our Super Senior
Men’s teams have
opposition from other
states.
We are trialling some
competitive events in the
Sydney area, and hope that
players will support them,
with on-line entry. Another
idea being mooted is to
have one or more country
tournaments as “Team”
events, starting with
Bathurst on November 16 &
17. Social tennis days on
Thursdays, Fridays and
weekends are also being
arranged to enable our
many new members to meet
and find out how Tennis
Seniors tick!
Cheers, Robyn
Norfolk Island - 2014
Players “meet in the middle” for Norfolk Island Vets’ Tennis games
Summary Norfolk Island Cheryl Tennis Club and Norfolk Island Travel Centre invite Australian and New Zealanders to meet in the middle on their South Pacific island turf for the 2014 Governors Lodge Norfolk Island Veterans Tennis games. A four day tournament - all players are welcome, synthetic grass court conditions are great and local club hospitality second to none. The player mix is unique; a Trans-Tasman gang out to enjoy the tournament combined with a holiday on stunning Norfolk Island and the opportunity to meet the locals both on and off the court. The tournament draws repeat visitors back every year possibly to defend their personal or their nation’s title. The Thursday night team challenge includes themed courts dressed with national flags and balloons and players under the spotlight as New Zealand, Australia and Norfolk battle it out. The Norfolk Island Travel Centre has special packages for travel from Sydney 21-28 April 2014 and from Brisbane 19-26 April 2014 to Norfolk Island. Prices start from ex Brisbane $849 twin share per person and ex Sydney from $899 twin share per person for a seven night stay. The prices include return economy class airfare to Norfolk Island (seat + bag), airline taxes, meet and greet at Norfolk Island airport, 7 nights twin share accommodation, 7 days car hire (car hire surcharge $18 per day plus petrol is extra), complimentary round of mini golf and ‘A Walk in the Wild’ and bonus discount Shopping Card. T ennis Seniors NSW is pleased to announce that
it has negotiated with venues throughout the Sydney Metro area for the conduct of age
tournaments on a monthly basis between 31 August and 31 December 2013. Each tournament will consist of Singles play, held on
Saturday afternoon, with Men’s and Women’s doubles on Sunday morning and Mixed doubles on Sunday afternoon. American Doubles will also be catered for
over some of the tournaments. For new members to Tennis Seniors’ competition, American Doubles means
that you enter the event and are put in a group of five players of equivalent ability, whereby you play one set with each of the other players in the group (so if you
don’t have a regular doubles partner, this event is perfect for you to meet new people).
Entries for each tournament will close four days prior to the tournament (only emailed entries will be accepted) and will be co-ordinated by the Committee of Tennis
Seniors NSW and run in consultation with the Club Professional at each tennis centre. Each tennis centre will have refreshments available to
purchase for attending players. The success of this “Pilot Programme” will determine if similar tournaments
are programmed into 2014, so come on get out there and participate!! If they are not patronized, they will not be continued into 2014.
For further information please contact Greg Scott on 0416 246 111.
