Tourists in Lucan Demesne

This was the scene at the sluice weir in Lucan Demesne back in 1903. The postcard shows well-

dressed ladies and a couple of gentlemen posing at the gate, perhaps after taking the spa water.

Tourists still come to Lucan these days, and while not for the spa water, a good proportion appear

to be visiting the place of their ancestors. Since the 1860s, Lucan people have emigrated to the

U.S.A, and Canada – some to farm land miles from anywhere, and some even went to the gold

rushes! Over the years, Lucan Newsletter has had numerous queries from their descendants, who

strive to make it back to their roots. We are glad to see them all, and are delighted that Lucan is

looking so attractive these days, making it a very welcoming place.

Many of us will travel far and wide over these summer months, but it’s always nice to come

home.

We hope that all have a safe and memorable holiday time!

Woodville Downs Residents Association (inc Esker Lane)

Wishing all in Newsletter a nice break and indeed to all our residents.

At our recent AGM our long-standing Secretary, John Kelly, stepped down after being in position

since 2007, our sincere thanks for all his dedication and work. Our association has been a crucial

part of keeping this a nice and sharing community.

We now are in a position where our association needs residents to make themselves available for the

positions of Secretary and Chairperson in order for our association to continue to function. The

recently elected committee and indeed any resident. who was unable to be present but is interested

in keeping our residents' association operating, plan to meet in early Sept to consider this dilemma.

Please give consideration over the next few weeks.

As we approach the end of July we can assume

that the adjudicators have been and gone by now.

While this lifts the pressure somewhat, we really

want to keep up our standards in terms of

presentation and tidiness. We ask everyone to

help us with this task by doing the obvious,

looking after your own patch. Big no no's are

cigarette butts as they are very hard to pick up

and are soooo bad for our birds and wildlife

generally. We hope you are enjoying the fine

weather and availing of some of our natural

beauty spots in Lucan such as the village green,

the weir and the demesne. Just please ensure you

look after your own litter.

As they set off on their well-earned summer

break we want to thank the newsletter team for

their consistent support of our work. Have a

great summer everyone!

Thank You I would like to thank most sincerely everyone

who helped and supported us during Pat’s stay in

Connolly Hospital. It was touch and go a few

times and the support, moral and emotional, has

kept me going.

Thanks to family, neighbours, golf and pitch and

putt club mates, and all who lent a hand in some

way. Special thanks to neighbours and friends,

they know who they are, for cutting grass and

lifts here and there, and all who enquired and

prayed. The support was heartfelt.

Pats loves you all, and so do I.

38th Anniversary – 3rd August Late of Cooldrinagh and Dodsboro, Lucan

In memory of our mother

She always learned to watch for us

Anxious if we were late

In winter by the window

In summer by the gate

And though we mocked her tenderly

Who had such foolish care

The long way home would seem more safe

Because she waited there

Her thoughts were all so full of us

She never could forget

And so we think that where she is

She must be watching yet

Waiting ‘til we come home to her

Anxious if we are late

Watching from Heaven’s window

Michael Farrelly

1st Anniversary Late of Sarsfield Park and Leixlip

Sometimes when I first awake

I think that you’re still here

And for a fleeting moment

The clouds all disappear

For you brought endless sunshine

Until you went away

And now I miss you desperately

Each minute of the day

You would not like to see me sad

So what I try to do

Is live a bright and happy life

In memory of you

For though I’ll always miss you

And it’s dreadful being apart

I haven’t really lost you

You’re still here in my heart

Sweet dreams, sleep tight my darling

Love and miss you so much, your heartbroken wife

Beryl

Our lives go on without you

But nothing is the same

We have to hide our heartache

When someone speaks your name

Sad are the hearts that love you

Silent are the tears that fall

Living here without you

Is the hardest part of all

You did so many things for us

Your heart was kind and true

And when we needed someone

We could always count on you

The special years will not return

When we are all together

But with the love in our hearts

You walk with us forever

Sadly missed by your loving daughters Diane, Yvonne,

Wendy, sons Michael, Wayne, Darroll, Russell, sons-

in-law, daughters-in-law.

RIP Dad, love and miss you so much

If we could write a story

It would be the greatest ever told

Of a kind and loving Granddad

Who had a heart of gold

If we could write a million pages

But still be unable to say, just how much we love and

miss him every single day

We will remember all he taught us

We hurt but won’t be sad

Because he’ll send us down the answers

And he’ll always be our granddad

Love and miss you for always Granddad, you were the

very best.

All your loving grandchildren and great

grandchildren

Alarming Seagulls!

Have you noticed the amount

of these birds around Lucan

these days? We’ve

discovere

d that in

Hillcrest

alone,

there are at least two nests on

rooftops!!!

Residents are being rudely

awakened from 4.30 am daily. Not too long ago,

seagulls so far inland, heralded rough weather.

The theory now is that coastal fish stocks have

become so depleted, they are scavenging inland

all the time.

Alarming also is the number of Cars being

stolen from houses in Lucan! There are reports of

at least a dozen high-end vehicles being taken

within the space of one week – very worrying!

A Bug Hotel and a big welcome for the Bees!

Chadwicks on the Lower Road are doing their bit

for the environment with this pretty display –

well done!

Grandad Shopping

Pick up my basket and search out the bread,

Two sliced pans I think she said,

A muffin for her and a muffin for me,

When I get home she’ll be making the tea.

Met Michael John by the fruit and the veg,

Moaning his aches had him close to the edge,

Raw eggs and garlic is what I prescribed,

But I get the feeling he’d rather have died.

Turn up my collar and zip up my coat,

Find the fish counter, what’s fresh off the boat,

A hake or a haddock or a slice of John Dory,

Fresh from the ocean around the island of Tory.

The milk shelf has super and low fat and slim,

A carton for all shapes the plump and the trim,

Two girls from the Balkans packing a shelf,

Pretend not to hear me talk to myself.

A packet of crackers, a bottle of wine,

Then to the checkout standing in line,

A little girl in sandals perched on a trolly,

Coaxing her Granny to buy her a lolly.

They’re paying with plastic, paying with phones,

Paying with money I feel old and alone,

Pack up my shopping, go on my way,

Thank you: I want to thank Lucan residents in

the Palmerstown-Fonthill electoral area for their

support in the recent County Council elections. I

was honoured and humbled to be elected and will

do my utmost to represent our community over

the coming years. I was also honoured to be

chosen as Chairperson of the Lucan-

Palmerstown-Fonthill Area Committee for the

coming year. As the only Lucan-based councillor

of the five elected for Palmerstown-Fonthill, I

am keen to ensure that the interests of residents

in Lucan are highlighted and acted upon. If there

is any issue you would like me to raise on your

behalf or if you have any questions or concerns,

please do not hesitate to contact me using my

details above and I would be delighted to assist

you.

Transport Users

We had a very satisfactory meeting with many

councillors and interested people who attended

our transport evening in Wynn's Hotel on our

new plan for the city centre. By getting the city

centre right there will be no need for massive

destruction of so many trees around Dublin. The

main delay to our transport system is in the city

centre. This is addressed by the Quay Bus

Contraflow that allows the bus easy access in and

out of the city, leaving adequate space for

cyclists. This is the first step in our effort to get a

full transport system for Lucan to meet the

massive demand due to the large number of new

houses in the area. Luas is the answer and after

the summer the campaign begins. T. Newton

086 3127364.

For the summer period our

shed will open only on

Tuesdays, Wednesdays or

Thursdays, as requested by

a member. Shedders can

still work on particular

projects but must arrange

access arrangements with a

committee member. This will be the format until

Monday, 09th September when we will return to

our usual Monday - Friday opening schedule.

We continue to seek advice from anybody with

hands-on experience of laying out or setting up a

serious workshop. We also urge people who have

power tools or hardwoods they no longer use to

consider gifting them to us -we will make good

use of them.

Our next open, general meeting is on Monday

16th September; 18.30 to 19.50 in Lucan

Library. This meeting will allow the committee

deliver updates on key projects and on our

Constitution review, which is expected to be

completed and voted on at our 2019 AGM, on

07th October 2019. The meeting will also

provide attendees with an opportunity to voice

their opinions and/or bring forward suggestions.

League Champions -Well done to the Minor

footballers who secured the Division 1 league

title with an impressive win away from home vs

Na Fianna, well done to Dave Cullen and his

management team, the team have been very

impressive throughout the campaign.

Disappointment for Senior Footballers, on

Wednesday, as they lost to St Vincent’s, on a

scoreline of 2.09 – 1.11. Inter Ladies secured a

Cup semi-final spot with a good win on the same

night against Skerries. Our Senior hurlers, after

losing to BSJ, have left themselves in a tricky

position with two games to go, against St Brigids

(a) and Crumlin (h), they will need two wins and

St Jude’s not to pick up points to escape the

relegation play-off game. Two losses and they

could be relegated automatically. Jnr A hurlers

also lost two games in three days to leave

themselves in a precarious position near the

bottom of the table. Jnr Bs maintained pressure

at the top of the league with a big win.

Well done to Daire Newcombe, Harry Ladd,

Mark Lavin and Emmet Allen who are part of

the Dublin U20 footballers that secured a

Leinster title last Friday night and best of luck as

the play Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final

tomorrow 27th July in Longford. Disappointment

for Dublin U16 Camogie as they crashed out of

Championship, last weekend, by the smallest of

margins, a one point loss to Wexford, well done

to Lauren Dawson © Phoebe Shannon Sinead

Daly Millie Reid and Lilly Rooney who

represented the club so well over the course of

the Championship. A draw for the Dublin Senior

Camogie team last weekend with Ali, Emma and

Orla all playing their part, Chloe and Aoife also

who lost with the Dublin Inter team so a tough

weekend all round.

The U11 Camogie team played in the mini

games at half time during the Dublin/Clare

camogie match. Lucan played Whitehall

Colmcille in the mini games and show great

skill, lifting, striking and scoring a few points.

After a thrilling camogie match, with end to end

action which saw Clare equalised in the final 10

secs of the game, afterwards the U11 girls got to

meet their camogie heroes. Thanks to Ali,

Emma, Orla and John for chatting to the girls and

providing them with a great experience and

photo opportunity.

Our deepest condolences to Livinus Smith and

the rest of the Smith family, on the recent loss of

Tommie. May he Rest in Peace.
