We sat down with New Westminster’s Mayor Coté to talk about some of his favourite things about the Royal City. Here’s what he told us:

Q What is your favourite #MadeInNew West experience?

A There’s so much to do and see here… but I’d have to say the River Market on New Westminster’s waterfront is one of my favourite spots. I often bring my family here for lunch before heading to the Curious Floor – perfect for exploring.

Q What do you think makes New West so unique?

A First, there’s our history as Western Canada’s oldest city and BC’s original capital. New Westminster also has a diverse, vibrant community and an incredible sense of place with its heritage buildings, beautiful parks and big city appeal.

Q How do you think the city has changed over the past few years?

A New Westminster has seen some amazing transformations – including new developments and newly revitalized areas that make it easy to explore. Our historic downtown has also once again become a lively destination for residents and visitors.

Q What is the best time of year to visit New West?

A That’s a tricky question because, in my opinion, it’s always a good time to visit. There’s so much going on here – from great shopping and festivals and events to live theatrical productions and simply discovering (or rediscovering) all of the city’s attractions and diverse neighbourhoods.

Q Do you have any special tips for visitors?

A Take some time to explore the different areas. We are an extremely walk-able and friendly community with lots to offer – from local breweries and wineries, to riverside attractions and dynamic, interesting neighbourhoods.

17SHOPPING

SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROPNew Westminster is a shopaholic’s paradise, complete with fun and funky shopping experiences that can be tailored to your style and sensibilities. Each neighbourhood offers something different – vintage and upcycled treasures, special interest stores, and multicultural and farm-fresh markets are only the beginning.

DowntownLooking for a shopping experience within easy SkyTrain distance? Check out Columbia and Front Street in Downtown New Westminster, featuring everything from convenient shopping and hand- made jewelery to boutiques where you might just be tempted to say yes to that dress. Even better, it’s all within walking distance of the New Westminster and Columbia SkyTrain stations. Downtown New Westminster boasts vintage and local items, contemporary furniture and elegant home décor. For a full list of hip, funky and fresh boutique shops, visit www.downtownnewwest.ca.

The QuayIf you’re interested in some leisurely browsing, try strolling south along the waterfront board- walk and you may find yourself entering a hub of activity. Welcome to the New West Quay, where you can shop right on the riverfront. Food artisans and boutique owners work side- by-side, giving visitors a glimpse into their inner workings. The winter market also makes its home on the Quay. Interested in some Fraser River swag? We’ve got that too, alongside some beautiful handcrafted First Nations products at the Fraser River Discovery Centre gift shop.

QueensboroughIf you think the only good outlet deals are across the border, then you may want to think again. One visit to Queensborough Landing is likely to change your mind. Take a trip to the other side of the Fraser River, and you’re sure to find some much-deserved retail therapy at the outlet’s name-brand stores. The Landing presents a variety of shopping options, ranging from supercentres to high-end clothing shops. And when you’ve shopped ‘til you’ve (almost) dropped, take a break and grab a bite at one of the local restaurants or Starlight Casino.

Uptown New WestLooking for a one-stop shop? Uptown New Westminster is “business central,” with services and shopping ranging from essential amenities to funky finds. All along 6th Street is where you’ll find most of the stores, culminating in the Royal City Centre Mall – a shopping centre in the heart of Uptown New Westminster. Be sure to explore the area around 6th Street, too. In the summer, nearby Tipperary Park is home to a farmers’ market, where you can meet and greet local farmers and sample their homemade wares.

Did You Know...?Columbia Street offers more bridal shops and services (over a dozen!) than any other street in Metro Vancouver.

CULTURE & HISTORY New Westminster Then & Now A Trip Down Memory LaneNew Westminster has the unique distinction of being Western Canada’s oldest city, and BC’s original capital. Nicknamed the “Royal City” by Queen Victoria, New Westminster was used as a main berth for steam paddlewheelers traveling up the Fraser River during the Gold Rush. Once considered the heart and soul of British Columbia, the city has retained its exceptional charm, while its intriguing history and strong character continue to define the city. Discover (or rediscover) the character, charm and history of the Royal City through a walking tour book.

New Westminster Museum & ArchivesVisit the city museum at the Anvil Centre to explore New Westminster’s development over the past 150 years. Exhibitions combine history with contemporary stories of New Westminster. There’s even a genuine stagecoach on display. Be sure to visit the archives, where thousands of historic photographs are available for viewing.

Canadian Lacrosse Hall of FameDid you know that lacrosse is Canada’s national summer sport? Located inside the Anvil Centre, the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame presents important milestones and moments in the sport’s history, including national championship trophies, Hall of Fame inductees, and exhibits of field and box lacrosse at the Olympic Games.

Samson V MuseumHave you ever boarded a real wooden steam-powered paddlewheeler? Now is your chance. New Westminster has the last working paddle-wheeler on the Fraser River, which has been converted into a maritime museum. Tour the interior of this completely restored and authentic paddlewheeler at the Quay, and imagine life on the Fraser River in days gone by.

Fraser River Discovery CentreWhat’s so cool about the Fraser River? For starters, it has its very own Discovery Centre – located right on the Quay. Here, you’ll learn some fun and interesting facts about how the Fraser River has helped shape British Columbia’s past – and why the Fraser River is still so important today – through tours and interactive exhibits.

1895 Irving HouseIrving House is named for Captain William Irving, also known as the “King of the Fraser River.” Stepping into this historic house is like taking a step back in time to the Victorian period. Take a free, guided tour, and relive the past!

Did You Know...?In 1898 the Great Fire decimated much of downtown Columbia Street? Much of what you see today has been rebuilt.

Together, the length of the Pier Park and the Boardwalk creates 2.5 km of riverside accessibility, sandwiching the Fraser River Discovery Centre, River Market, the Inn at the Quay and more.

LIVING IN NEW WEST!After one visit, you might just move here. Here are a few reasons why people love living in New West!

Its central location, which makes commuting a breeze via car or transit. There are five SkyTrain stations

within city limits!

As one of British Columbia’s first cities, New Westminster retains its cultural heritage with a contemporary urban vibe.

Each neighbourhood features its own distinct character and history, and suits every type of lifestyle. Safe and attractive neighbourhoods with high walkability scores.

A sense of city pride in the locals, who are super-friendly and engaged in their community.

Exciting urban developments such as The Brewery District and the RiverSky towers continue to bring new energy, business and opportunities to the city.

Did You Know...?New Westminster is home to thirteen neighbourhoods, six central areas, and countless incredible experiences!

35STAY

Page 36: Tourism New West Travel Guide 2015-2016

NEIGHBOURHOODSThough New Westminster comprises 13 exciting and culturally-diverse neighbourhoods, we’ve taken the liberty of condensing these into six key areas for your convenience.

DowntownFrom Royal Avenue to the sandy volleyball beaches of Westminster Pier Park, you’ll find Downtown New Westminster. With two SkyTrain stations on Columbia Street, this area is convenient and easily accessible. Columbia Street is the main thoroughfare for this lively area, where the buildings have an old-world feel – many of which showcase their original foundations. Stroll along Columbia Street – nicknamed “Bridal Row” – and do some shopping at the locally-owned shops. During the summer, the street hosts the Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Festival – welcoming sweet and savoury treats as well as plenty of hungry festival-goers. Visit the many funky, small artisans in Downtown New West and you’re sure to find something amazing. Check out the map and feel free to explore. For more information, visit www.downtownnewwest.ca.

The QuayFrom Stewardson Way to the Fraser River, and between 3rd Avenue and Begbie Street, is the New Westminster Quay, encompassing the Waterfront Esplanade Boardwalk and the River Market. Towards the end of September, the Quay presents RiverFest, an event celebrating the importance of the Fraser River to British Columbians. The River Market features several local and vintage artisans, as well as many award-winning eateries. Check out the Hungry

Floor for some great eats, and visit the top floor to satisfy your curiosity. While here, stay at the chic and modern Inn at the Quay, tickle your tastebuds with some freshly-shucked oysters at The Boathouse and drop by the Fraser River Discovery Centre to learn about the future of the Fraser River.

QueensboroughKnown as New Westminster’s very own “island suburb,” Queensborough is a unique neighbour-hood separated from the rest of the city by a river. Steal some deals at the outlet stores in Queensborough Landing, or catch some excitement at the nearby Starlight Casino. They have live shows and promotional events happening all the time! Join in the fun at our local parks and communal gardens, or grab a bite at Frankie G’s Boilerhouse Pub, ideal for relaxing and meeting up with friends.

UptownAt the heart of the city is Uptown New Westminster

– also known as “business central.” Most of the action can be found around 6th Street and 6th Avenue and just beyond. If you’re looking for some green space, pay a visit to Queen’s Park where the Arts Council of New Westminster can be found, or visit Moody Park with its outdoor swimming pool. Across the street is the Massey Theatre, which puts on an amazing theatrical production every year. Tipperary Park is where the Royal City Farmers Market sets up shop in the summer months. In Uptown you’ll find nearly everything you need (or want) at your doorstep.

Sapperton“Eclectic” and “niche” are the words locals use to best describe this distinct, up-and-coming community in the city’s East End. Here, big businesses and charming stores blend to create a paradise for treasure hunters. The alluring Brewery District sprouts soaring office buildings, while locally-owned shops line East Columbia Street. From bakeries and do-it-yourself studios to comic book stores and more, Columbia Street is sure to be an adventure. Book an appointment at the Van Dop Gallery, an art gallery within a house, or visit the The Castle Neighbourhood Grill for a pint of beer in a one-of-a-kind venue with a very unusual history. Join in the festivities during the annual Sapperton Day Street Festival – which takes over East Columbia Street for a community-led celebration of the Sapperton neighbourhood each June.

West End – 12th StreetJust past 10th Street is where you’ll find the West End neighbourhood, where “industrial-chic” is what it’s all about. Where else can you tour the Pacific Breeze Winery or Steel & Oak Brewing Co. beside the railway tracks? Much of the action is on 12th Street, a main arterial road heading into Burnaby, which plays host to the 12th Street Music Festival – a lively day-long event of blues, rock, jazz and swing music. Featuring locally-owned shops and designers, this area offers an interesting mix of shops and eateries. Check out some hip upcycled décor and designer items from local artists. Grab some eats at the gourmet sandwich shop or organic café, or peruse the half-dozen markets specializing in an array of multicultural and hard-to-find ingredients. Take some time to explore the West End yourself, and discover something different.
