On February 14 Armenian ApostolicChurch celebrates the Feast of the Lord'sPresentation to the Temple. The celebration ofthe feast has some features deriving fromtimes immemorial connected with sun wor-ship, symbolizing the coming of spring.According to Moses of Khorenatsi the infantChrist was brought to the Temple by Mary andJoseph and presented to God.

A man named Simeon was there, to whomit had been revealed that he would not seedeath before he had seen the Lord. Simeonheld the infant in his arms, blessed God, andsaid, "Lord, let your servant now depart inpeace, for my eyes have seen your Salvation,which you have prepared before the face of allpeople".

In the tradition of the Church, EveningServices (Nakhatonak) are conducted on thenight preceding the Feast Day. At the conclu-sion of the service, the priest lights a candlefrom the Holy Altar, and distributes the flameto all present. With great care, the faithful takethe lit candles home to their families.

According to the Armenian tradition,family members dance around the fire 3 or 7times and jump over it. These numbers arebelieved to be symbols of fertility, and the fireis a symbol of light and purity, here the firewas also used for telling the future: if theflames faced the south - east, the year wouldbe plentiful and rich - the opposite, if theyfaced north - west.

String players continue to dominate thelist of winners of the Credit Suisse YoungArtist Award, with Armenian violinist SergeyKhachatryan receiving this year's accolade,which carries a cash prize of CHF 75,000(£50,000).

Khachatryan also received a concerto per-formance with the Vienna Philharmonic atLucerne Festival on 13 September, under thedirection of Gustavo Dudamel.

The award is given every two years to ayoung soloist under 30 and is presented joint-ly by the Lucerne Festival, the ViennaPhilharmonic, the Friends of Music Society inVienna and the Jubilee Fund. This year's jurywas chaired by Lucerne Festival executiveand artistic director Michael Haefliger, andthe result was announced following auditions

in the Vienna Musikverein.Khachatryan, 28, became the youngest

winner of the Sibelius Violin Competition in2000, and won the Queen ElisabethCompetition five years later. Besides, He hasperformed with such internationallyacclaimed orchestras and conductors as theBerlin Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Parisunder Andris Nelsons, the BambergSymphony under Jonathan Nott, the NewYork Philharmonic, the PhiladelphiaOrchestra and the Boston Symphony.

Only one of the eight awards given outover the past 14 years has gone to a non-stringplayer (pianist Martin Helmchen in 2006).Previous string player recipients include vio-linist Vilde Frang (2012) and cellist NicolasAltstaedt (2010).
