Our Regional Housing Crisis Hotline is the central point of contact for all persons experiencing a housing crisis throughout Greater Hampton Roads.

Our Regional Housing Crisis Hotline is the first point of entry to ForKids, as well as hundreds of public and privately funded resources in 13 jurisdictions. Through the Hotline, we have been entrusted to connect anyone in crisis to our community’s extended network of resources for assistance and to prevent them from falling into homelessness whenever possible. The Hotline also allows us to collect an enormous amount of data about the homeless population in our region; armed with more knowledge about their specific needs, we are now better equipped to help move these families towards stability.

During the period of July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016, the ForKids Regional Housing Crisis Hotline received a total of over 27,000 calls from 13,000 callers, 35% of whom were requesting emergency shelter because they had nowhere else to go. On average, the Regional Housing Crisis Hotline receives 528 calls each week.

BEYOND THE BELL - TUTORINGWhen school-aged children enter one of our housing programs with their family, the ForKids education team evaluates their academic standing. If they fall below their peers in reading and/or math, we offer targeted remediation through our after-school tutoring programs located in six neighborhood-based education sites . Our educators create a customized plan to focus on each child’s individual needs. Two days a week students are transported to ForKids’s sites where they work one-on-one with trained staff and volunteers to improve skill levels. Students who do not need tutoring receive baseline services including clothing, enrollment assistance, and immunizations, and academic monitored to ensure their continued progress. The team also tracks attendance and behavior, connecting families to community resources as needed. 395 children received assistance from the ForKids Education team last year; 118 students received intensive, customized tutoring

from our trained staff and volunteers through Beyond the Bell.

FORKIDS IN SCHOOLSAs part of a privately-funded 3-year pilot project, ForKids-in-Schools operates on-site at James Monroe and Little Creek elementary schools to provide comprehensive services for McKinney-Vento identified children who would typically not otherwise be eligible for HUD-funded services. Remediation tutoring is offered to students who need it, led by a full-time credentialed educator, and core services such as attendance tracking, connections to community resources, and providing supplies, clothing, and nutrition are coordinated through a full-time family case manager. Last year, 89 students participated in ForKids’s Education Pilot project within two

local public schools.

KICKSTARTDuring the month of July, ForKids’s rising kindergartners are eligible to participate in our four-week kindergarten readiness program. Students are evaluated to determine which academic areas need improvement, and they meet four days a week to practice writing, fine motor skills, math, and reading comprehension – the skills needed to start kindergarten prepared and in better alignment with their peers. 20 children participated in Kickstart in July 2016.

JUMPSTARTDuring the month of August, ForKids’s educators work with school-aged children to help prepare them for the upcoming school year. The main focus of this exercise is to support and promote 21st Century skills using technology: planning, critical thinking, reasoning, creativity, and strong communication. Academic deficits are identified and addressed with individualized plans that promote and provide engaging educational opportunities. Fun activities and field trips are planned each Friday for those students who participate regularly. This much-needed intervention is provided to help overcome the “summer learning loss” that is experienced by many students and to create an experience that motivates children to learn. 32 children participated in Jumpstart in August 2016.

EMERGENCY SHELTERForKids provides emergency shelter for families in Norfolk at our Haven House emergency shelter. The families we serve at Haven House come from a situation of poverty and crisis, and many have experienced homelessness multiple times. Haven House Emergency Shelter currently operates at overflow capacity on a daily basis to shelter families who would otherwise sleep on the street. ForKids’s emergency shelter programs provided a warm bed to a total of 150 families experiencing homelessness last year.

SUPPORTIVE HOUSINGFamilies who need additional time to stabilize after shelter are placed in ForKids’s transitional housing programs, and families with a disability that prevent them from remaining stable without support services are placed in our permanent supportive housing. These families can stay in permanent supportive housing until the youngest child is 18 or has graduated from high school. ForKids provided supportive housing to 65 families last year.

RAPID REHOUSINGFamilies in these programs are placed in housing as quickly as possible using rental assistance funded through various local, state and federal programs. ForKids uses a “Critical Time Intervention” model to stabilize families within the community over a period of approximately nine months. Our rapid re-housing programs worked with 172 families throughout Greater

Hampton Roads.

SUPPORT SERVICES FOR VETERAN FAMILIESForKids serves veterans living in Norfolk through federally-funded homeless prevention and rapid re-housing programs. These services include case management, housing placement, emergency and rental assistance. Sixty-seven veterans and their families received assistance from ForKids in FY16.

HOUSING PLACEMENTFamilies at ForKids work with one of our Housing Specialists to search for appropriate housing, assist with landlord negotiations if needed, and access housing assistance from dozens of different available sources.

JOB COACHINGAdults and teens in our families work with ForKids’s Job Coaches to determine employment and education history, and job readiness. Our coaches develop and maintain relationships with local employers to provide credible employment leads culminating in job placement. Coaches also provide resume assistance and childcare or transportation as needed for job-related appointments.

MENTAL HEALTH CONSULTATIONSMental Health Specialists at ForKids assess mental health needs, provide information about accessing resources in the community, provide referrals and hands-on assistance with appointments, and provide crisis intervention as needed. We maintain direct partnerships with a psychologist, an in-home mental health provider, outpatient counseling clinics, and community health centers to increase access to free or income-based mental health services.

COORDINATION OF CARE & CRITICAL TIME INTERVENTION CASE MANAGEMENTFamily Case Managers at ForKids provide adults and children with initial assessments, health consultations, referrals to resources, and on-going coordination of care. Family Case Managers quickly connect adults and children to these partners, creating pathways to long-term stability. Through critical time intervention case management, we provide nine months of support starting with high-intensity services that slowly transition to periodic support to assure stability. ForKids has established key partnerships with over 400 qualified housing-related resource providers in Hampton Roads with whom we collaborate to ensure our families are connected to care. Approximately 100 of those resources are located in Norfolk.

The mission of ForKids is breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty for families and children. Your support connects us to homeless families throughout Hampton Roads and provides help through a combination of housing, education, and other vital services.

$10,000 - Keep our kids out of cars, off the floor, and in school by providing ten homeless children with tutoring and education programs, counseling, case management, and enrichment activities for an entire year.

$5,000 - Break the cycle by giving Beyond the Bell tutoring to two children for the whole school year with $200 left over for school supplies.

$2,500 – Begin to heal the scars of homelessness by making Mental Health Counseling available for two ForKids kids for an entire year.

$1,500 - Make sure our kids are ready to learn by stocking the Haven House Emergency Shelter with food for its ten families for one fill month.

$1,000 - Keep ForKids kids from falling further behind by enrolling them in our five week Jump Start tutoring program in August.

$500 - Give ForKids kids the experience of a lifetime and an opportunity to just be a kid with one week of overnight summer camp.
