To the Liberation Route Europe

Introduction

Liberation Route Europe is a continuously growing, international remembrance trail that connects important milestones from modern European history. It forms a link between the main regions along the Western Allied Forces’ advance from southern England, to the beaches of Normandy, the Belgian Ardennes, Brabant, Arnhem, Nijmegen, the Hürtgen Forest and on to Berlin. The route then continues to the Polish city of Gdansk, where a democratic revolution for overcoming the division of Europe was launched nearly two generations later.

Liberation Route Europe gives you the chance to discover and experience the route that the Allied Forces took during the final phase of the Second World War. It focuses on the liberation of continental Europe from the National Socialist occupation, and specifically, the long-lasting consequences of World War II.

Liberation Route Europe reaches across national borders that have divided our continent for far too long. It deals with individual nation states’ selective memories of the war, and calls for an international response, by seeking to examine the complex heritage of the Second World War from multiple historical perspectives. It connects this history with life in modern-day Europe, as well as other parts of the world, underscoring the role of in-ternational reconciliation and the promotion of reflection: reflection on the value of our hard-won freedoms.

Our aim, is to combine the Liberation Route with innovative and sustainable tourism products and special offers, in collaboration with our international partners, in order to make this core part of European history more visible and more accessible for visitors from all over the world.

Liberation Route Europe FoundationThe Liberation Route Europe Foundation works with government organisations, univer-sities, museums, veteran societies, commemorative events organisers, travel agents, tour operators and other tourism organisations in Western Europe and Poland, to bring to-gether national perspectives on the liberation of Europe, to learn and share experiences and understanding, in order to create a unified awareness of the importance of freedom. The foundation commemorates the events of the Second World War and encourages the citizens of Europe to celebrate and cherish it for the future.

The foundation’s mission is to monitor and develop the Liberation Route Europe concept; to organise promotional activities, provide knowledge and information to regions that are interested in the concept; and to work on the further expansion of Liberation Route Europe. Furthermore, the foundation would like to function as a portal for the public for accessing museums, events and other related activities in these regions of Europe.

The Liberation Route Foundation promotes the route using modern communication such as websites, apps and social media that can be accessed on route to unlock the stories from people who were involved in the final phases of the Second World War. The aim is to bring an important episode in the history of Europe back to life; one in which freedom was lost and won back again, and to keep it alive for the people of today and generations to come.

PartnersFor the realisation of the Liberation Route Europe, the Liberation Route Europe Foundation works together with a consortium of leading European WWII mu-seums ans other partners, of whicht the key partners are:• Alliiertenmuseum, Berlin, Germany• Museum of the Second World War, Gdansk, Poland• Région Basse Normandie, Caen, France• Rureifel Tourismus, Hürtgenwald, Germany• Visit Kent, Kent, United Kingdom• Bastogne War Museum, Bastogne, Belgium• National Liberation Museum, 1944-1945, Groesbeek, the Netherlands

To the Liberation Route Europe

Introduction

The Liberation Route Europe originated from the Liberation Route - the Netherlands, founded in 2008. This Dutch route takes you to over 170 audio spots in the five southern provinces, each with its own interesting and often moving story about civilians and sol-diers who lived and fought there in 1944-1945.

The Liberation Route has been designed so that you can plan your own route. How you follow the Liberation Route is entirely up to you. You can walk, cycle or drive and be your own guide. Of course you can also book an organized (guided) bus tour or a ‘liberation tour’ in a historical vehicle!

All of the audio spots are marked on a map on our website and in our brochures. Here you can find information about the nearby memorials, museums and cemeteries; photos, vi-deos, teaching packs for youngsters between 10-14 years old, routes, touristic package deals, events and you can download all audio stories in (at least) three languages.

These audio stories can be downloaded for free as MP3’s from our website www.liberationroute.com, or streamed via our app.

Our guide to the Liberation Route ExperienceThe LRE Tour and Travel Guide aims at providing a comprehensive tool gathering a wide range of tour and travel packages along the historic route. The tour suggestions included in this edition are either focusing on a specific area or event, or transnational and cover longer stretches of the historic allied forces’ advance. Many of the tours suggested are being offe-red and operated by our Tour Operator partners in their respective regions. We cordially in-vite you to contact the Liberation Route Europe Foundation to join our network and extend this experience to your region of interest. This edition of the LRE Tour & Travel guides consists of the following main sections:

∙ The first section is a Liberation Route Modules based suggestions which can be of- fered by travel operator separately or combined with other modules to create a variety of tours. ∙ The second section consists of Transnational Tours along the route, combining stretches of the Allied Forces’ advance covering more than one historic chapter and more than one country. ∙ The third section, The Special Tour Suggestions, either focus on a specific historic event or special theme such as hiking or cycling the route. ∙ The fourth section consists of Educational School packages. By partnering with Educational Travel specialists in different LRE regions we hope to reach out to educational institutions and educators with suggestions of packages to connect the future generations with important milestones of modern European history along the Liberation Route. ∙ The fifth section, Site Suggestions, of the LRE Tour and Travel Guide lists , per country and region, the major museums, War Graves, Memorials and important historic sites along the route related to the events leading to the end of WWII.

We also offer a section listing members of LRE’s tour guides network organization com-posed of knowledgeable and qualified guides to enrich the travel experience of your cus-tomers and add a professional historic input to your tours. We invite professional guides to contact LRE in order to join the growing LRE Guide Network. We also invite you to use the supporting tools developed by LRE, such as the website the Mobile App and soon to be released LRE Virtual Reality. By combining the use of these tools and the suggestions of our Tour and Travel Guide, we hope we can enhance your existing tour offerings and help you reach a greater audience to experience the historic Liberation Route Europe.

On the evening of 6 June 1944, the Allied forces had established a foothold on all five landing beaches. There was still a long way to go, but the day’s operations, that took the German command by sur-prise, were successful. Fought between the iconic June 6 landings and the libe-ration of Paris on 25 August, the Battle of Normandy is often overlooked. Yet this campaign decided the course of the war in North-western Europe. The military cemeteries and memorial sites dotting the landscape of Normandy remind us of the heavy price that was paid for Europe to regain its freedom.

The liberation of Paris didn’t have Allied priority, but an uprising of the popula-tion against the Germans on 19 August made it necessary. The German com-mander of Paris, Lieutenant-General Choltitz, was ordered to crush the insur-rection and to destroy the city, as the Germans did in Warsaw. To prevent this disaster, Charles de Gaulle insisted to in-terfere. Allied Command sent in Major-General Leclerc’s 2nd French Armoured Division, supported by the U.S. 4th In-fantry Division of Major-General Bar-ton. A first group managed to infiltrate into the heart of Paris on the evening of August 24, and on the 26th of August a huge triumphal parade was held on the Champs-Élysées.

The Battle of the Bulge (16 December 1944 – 25 January 1945) was a major German offensive campaign launched through the densely forested Ardennes region of Wallonia in Belgium, France, and Luxembourg on the Western Front toward the end of World War II in Eu-rope. The surprise attack caught the Allied forces completely off guard. Uni-ted States forces bore the brunt of the attack and incurred their highest ca-sualties for any operation during the war. At the end of December 1944, the Allies, reinforced by Patton’s army and the 30th British Corps under Montgo-mery, launched their counter-offensive and gradually pushed back the German armies. By the end of January 1945, the Germans had retreated behind the Sie-gfried Line.

The Battle Of The Scheldt – North Bra-bant: The Battle of the Scheldt occupies a prominent place in the collective me-mory of the local Zeeland population and beyond.. During this often called “forgotten battle” that was fought here at the end of 1944, the area around the Western Scheldt provided the scene of ac-tion that will prove to be crucial to open up the waterway into Antwerp, which had already been liberated. Because the airborne landings known as operation “Market Garden” near Arnhem and Nij-megen had failed, the opening up of the harbour in Antwerp was of vital impor-tance for the shipping in of troops and essential supplies for rapid transporta-tion to the front. Thus the Battle of the Scheldt played a key role in the liberation of The Netherlands and the ending of the Second World War.

To ensure the success of Operation Mar-ket Garden, the Allied forces had to capture the bridge in Arnhem. But the light-armed airborne forces stood no chance against two SS Panzer Divisions that happened to be in the area. After desperate fighting and many casualties the Arnhem bridge proved to be ‘a bridge too far’. The British and Polish paratroo-pers that were dropped near Arnhem faced many problems. The paratroopers in Arnhem were expected to hold out for four days at the most. During the autumn and winter of 1944/45, the longest battle of the Second World War on German soil took place in the Hürtgen Forest. With this battle, the war precipitated by the Nazi regime re-turned to Germany. The battle caused numerous casualties on both sides. For the American soldiers, it’s very name – with its first syllable ‘hurt’ – became a byword for injury and death. The Hürt-gen Forest consisted of thick woodland, bare hilltops and deep gorges. In the fall and winter, heavy rain and snowfall and a lack of roads made it extremely difficult to penetrate, either by foot or in vehicles. Nonetheless, the Allies pushed into the rough and unfamiliar terrain in order to secure their advance towards the Rhine. The battle proceeded from mid-September 1944 to mid-February 1945, and ended with an Allied victory.

Battle of Britain Tour

Come to England on an 8-day tour to explore the fascinating war in the skies known as the Battle of Britain. After the fall of France in 1940 and their own dis-couraging defeat in Belgium and France, the United Kingdom regrouped, dug in and took to the air to defend their island nation against the Luftwaffe, causing Hitler to abandon his plans to invade the country. We visit sites such as 800-year-old Dover Castle, where the planning of Operation Dynamo took place, Bletchley Park, where the Enigma code was crac-ked, and Churchill’s Cabinet War Rooms, as well as the Imperial War Museums in London and Duxford.

Guarding the shortest sea crossing to Europe, Kent has been on the frontline of England’s defence for centuries, and this role came to the fore in World War II.

The county played a crucial part in pi-votal episodes of World War Two (1939–1945): Dover, ‘Lock and Key of England’, was one of the most important military centres in Britain and tells a thrilling story of its crucial importance during WW2. The Battle of Britain (1940) that raged over Kent skies, the epic evacua-tion of Dunkirk (1940) and covert opera-tions to make the D-Day landings (1944) for the long-awaited invasion of Europe a success.

Normandy 1944: Beyond the beaches

This tour will look at operations of the Anglo-Canadian armies of 21st Army Group initially in trying to stop the Ger-man forces in the eastern bridgehead in order to support American breakout operations further west. We then follow their drive out of the bridgehead to join up with American forces. This led to the destruction of the German Army in Nor-mandy in what became known as the ‘Battle of the Falaise Pocket’. Both British 2nd Army and the Canadian 1st Army closely supported each other with many joint operations. For Canadians this will be an insight into the fortitude and resol-ve of their forces as they fought the best of the German Army.

This tour tells the story of Canada’s invol-vement in two of the iconic operations of the Second World War – the Dieppe raid in 1942 and the Normandy campaign that began on D-Day 6th June 1944. For Cana-dians this will be an insight into the for-titude and resolve of their forces as they fought the best of the German Army. In Canada the Dieppe raid remains the most controversial action of World War II. Was it necessary or worth the sacrifice? On this tour you will be able to address these ques-tions and discover what happened on that violent August morning. The landings at Normandy and the subsequent breakout saw the Canadians forces involved in some of the toughest confrontations in WWII against a skilled and fanatical enemy. The Canadians got furthest inland than any other force on D-Day, 6th June, then took on some of the most difficult challenges in June and July after D-Day with their repu-tation for courage and skill enhanced by their considerable successes.

“Crossing the western German borders“ Rureifel Bike Tour

The German region “Eifel” is located at the German western boarder and used to be known as the poorhouse of the Prussian Rhineland. For both these reasons a railway (`Vennbahn`) system was established, starting in 1882. In the following decades the railroad became important for the population and the coal and ore industry but was also used militarily. Alongside two wars the changing borders exert a major influence on its development. The former railway is the heart of the tour. It starts in Aachen and the border triangle that is situated there. While crossing the border many times the tour will lead to Schengen. In Schengen another border triangle is introduced. The World Wars will be the main topic of the tour. The history will be explained for example in city tours, by visiting bunkers or even in literary excursions. It is therefore the major objective of the tour to point out that free-dom did not come without war.

Krakow - Auschwitz Tour

Join us on a tour to Krakow and the heart of Hitler’s reign of terror - Ausch-witz. There are few names that stand for the horror of the Nazi reign over Europe quite like that of Auschwitz. A death camp cannot tell the true na-ture of a place that turned killing into a mechanized process, humans into a raw material and murder into a factory system. The attempted genocide of Jews, Gypsies and other demonized groups is one which we all still find hard to ex-plain. How did a rational intelligent na-tion like the Germans allow themselves to get into a position where this could take place? How did a man take part in what went on here by day and go home to play with his children in the evening? How did the camp function and eventu-ally fall? How did you survive this place? What do we learn about ourselves when we visit this place? This is a special tour not to be missed as we tell an incredi-ble story about a time and place – and more than one nation.

From these three bunkers, there is a splendid panorama of the entire valley extending to the town and country-side of Lucca, the countryside of Pisa, the Versilia coast and sea, and the Apuan Alps. These sites were strategic positions that controlled the line and stopped the trains and the advance of the Allies who had pe-netrated the valley and had begun to move forward toward the Gothic Line at the be-ginning of September. The walk continues through the woods of the Villa of Cature-glio, the 17th century summer residence of the Mansi family that housed a number of SS officers during the war.

Historical introduction

Britain played a key role in the resistance against Germany and its final defeat. After the defeat of France in 1940 Britain was left to face Nazi Germany on its own until the United States and the Soviet Union entered the war. British forces fought on almost all fronts while the civilian population endured attacks by the German Air Force and later by the V-weapons. In 1944 Britain also became the staging ground for the Allied invasion of Wes-tern Europe.

Kent

In 1944 Britain became the staging area for the Allied invasion of Europe. To ensure the success of the invasion large scale deceptions were set up to trick the Nazi’s into believing the main landings would in take place at Calais instead of Normandy. In Kent an entire fictional Army Group was set up to achieve this goal. This deception was so successful that even after the landings in Normandy the German Army kept strong forces in Calais in anticipation of another Allied attack.

Hampshire

During the Second World War the county of Hampshire was home to several military and naval bases. The ports at Southampton and Portsmouth were important locations for the preparation and execution of the D-Day landings. During the war both these cities were bombed by the Luftwaffe. Furthermore Hampshire was an important location for the production of the iconic Spitfire airplane which was designed and constructed here alongside other aircraft.

London

London played an important role in nearly every aspect of the Second World War. The city was host to several governments in exile after the Nazi conquest of Europe and was an important centre for the planning of the Allied war efforts. London was bombed during the Blitz and later on during the war it was hit by V1 and V2 rockets. Despite these at-tacks the population of London remained defiant until the victory over Nazi-Germany was achieved.

Portsmouth

Because of its location and its large port facilities Portsmouth gained a large military importance during the last stages of the Second World War. It was for the same reasons that the city also was an obvious target for the German Luftwaffe who bombed the city on multiple occasions. Hundreds of civilians died during these attacks and the city was badly damaged. In 1944 Portsmouth became one of the main embarkation points for the D-Day landings and the site of the headquarters of the supreme Allied commander Eisenhower.

Historical introduction

In 1940 Nazi Germany invaded and occupied France. This marked the beginning of four years of oppression in which a large part of the Jewish population was deported. In June 1944 the Allied invasion of Western Europe began and one of the largest battles of the war was fought in Normandy. During these fights tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians lost their lives. France emerged from the war as one of the major powers and played an important role in the shaping of post war Europe.

Normandy

On the 6th of June 1944 one of the largest fleets ever assembled crossed the English chan-nel towards France: the Allied invasion of Europe had begun. After the storming and cap-turing of the beaches a fierce battle broke out that was to last for two months. In some of the heaviest fighting of the war many soldiers and civilians lost their lives and the Normandy countryside was left completely devastated.

Paris

After the Allied forces broke out of Normandy they headed north in pursuit of the retre-ating German army. Paris was not a priority for the Allies since they did not want to risk damaging the city. This changed when the Parisians started a revolt on the 19th of August 1944. The Allies quickly send the French and American forces to liberate the city. The first units reached Paris on the 24th. The next day French and American soldiers were welco-med by the Parisians.

More than a museum dedicated to the lan-dings on D-Day, the Juno Beach Centre is a place of memory representing a whole na-tion. It recalls the participation of Canada in the Second World War and its important contribution to the liberation of Western Europe. Canada itself emerged transfor-med from the conflict.

Open since 2003, the Juno Beach Centre is located opposite the beach in Courseulles-sur-Mer, on one of the strongpoints which protected the harbour entrance and which the 3rd Canadian Division had to neutralize on 6 June 1944. More than just a museum dedicated to the landings on D-Day, it is a place of memory for an entire nation. It is devoted to the participation of Canada in the Second World War and its important contribution to the liberation of Western Europe.

At war alongside the United Kingdom as soon as September 1939, Canada had made a considerable effort by mobilizing all its economic and human resources. After a rapid industrial transformation, it had be-come, with the United States, the ‘arsenal of democracy’.

If conscription was restored, Canada sent fast only volunteers overseas. Painful me-mories of the First World War evoked in-deed tensions arising between English-speakers and French-speakers on this question. More than one million Canadi-ans were mobilized during the conflict, ne-arly half of the men in the age to bear arms.

At the end, the country came out of the war transformed and with its national unity in-tact. The Juno Beach Centre offers visitors a comprehensive overview of Canada’s wa-refforts, through six thematic showrooms.

The Pointe du Hoc

Pointe du Hoc was a strategic point in the German defences on the Normandy coast. Under the orders of Colonel J. E. Rudder the soldiers achieved the incredi-ble feat of reaching the top in just a few minutes despite the slope being very slip-pery, the climbing ropes made heavy by seawater, and intense fire from the de-fenders. In a lunar landscape full of deep craters, the fierce battle which ensued was even bloodier than the climb.

Historical introduction

In May 1940 the German army invaded Belgium and managed to encircle the Allied ar-mies via a bold advance through the Ardennes. During the occupation that lasted for four years thousands of Belgians lost their lives and a large part of the Jewish population was deported. In 1944-1945 Belgium again gained large strategic importance as the Allies tried to bring the port of Antwerp into use and the German army made a last attempt to turn the tide of the war during the Battle of the Bulge.

The Battle of the Bulge

By late 1944 the military outlook of Nazi-Germany was bleak. On the Eastern front the So-viet Union had won several large victories and was pushing towards the German border. In the West, the Allied forces had broken out of their Normandy beachhead and raced across Northern France and Belgium before capturing the Southern part of the Nether-lands from September 1944 onwards. The German army was on the back foot and defeat seemed almost inevitable. Adolf Hitler and the German high command where however unwilling to surrender and decided on one last big gamble to change the course of the war. The idea was that if a major victory could be won in the West, the British and American forces could be persuaded to sign a peace treaty favourable to Nazi-Germany. After this was achieved the German army could then focus all of its attention on the battle in the East.

On the 16th of December the German army launched its attack and burst through the Allied lines. Initial progress was good as the US forces were taken completely by surprise and because bad weather prevented the Allied air force from intervening. The German armies managed to advance for about 40-50 miles but were then halted by hastily as-sembled allied forces. The Allied forces managed to keep hold of some key positions. In the north the high ground of Elsenborn ridge remained in Allied hands while in the south the critical road junction of Bastogne also never fell to the Germans. The Battle of Bastogne was to become one of the most famous operations of the Ardennes Offensive. Here Ame-rican units were surrounded by German forces and managed to hold out under bitter winter conditions and heavy fighting for several days. On the 26th of December the Allied units in Bastogne were relieved by elements of George Patton’s US Third Army. Now the roles were switched and the Allies went on the offensive along the entire front. By the 25th of January 1945, after more heavy fighting, the German forces had been pushed back to their starting positions of the 16th of December. They had gambled their last elite re-serve units in a futile battle and could no longer have any hope of winning the war. From now on Germany would be on the defensive until the end of WWII.

Belgium has not been spared the horror of Nazism and its concentration camps and the fortress of Breendonk is a mo-ving and striking example. The Memorial reaches out to those who, in one way or another, have fought for freedom, have stood up to oppression, have suffered, victims of racism and blind fanaticism: war veterans, Resistance fighters, priso-ners of war, the concentration camp prisoners and Jewish Resistance fighters.

Located just a stone’s throw from the fa-mous Mardasson Memorial, the Bastogne War Museum represents a new way to re-member the past, specifically devoted to the Second World War in Belgium. We are offered a fresh perception in a modern and interactive framework of the causes, events and consequences of World War II through the lens of the Ardennes Counteroffensive – the “Battle of the Bulge”.

The Bastogne War Museum covers the Se-cond World War, from its origins up to au-tumn 1944, and then focuses on the Battle of the Bulge. Key events of the war and the combatants’ ordeal are reproduced here with the aim of clarifying the broad sweep of its history. The centre provides a very clear picture of how the civilians lived

during the occupation, during the battle itself, and afterwards. The many conse-quences of what was probably one of the most serious battles in world history are very clearly described.Housed in a brand-new building displaying an adventurous architectural concept, the Bastogne War Museum is located on the former Bastogne Historical Centre site. The original set design of this commemorative centre is the latest in modernity. The new journey through the museum is dotted with flashbacks, genuine multi-sensory, three-dimensional scenes in a completely new format. You will find yourself in a state of total his-torical immersion!

Historical introduction

Luxembourg was invaded by Nazi Germany in May 1940 despite the fact that the coun-try was neutral prior to the war. Luxembourg had no army to speak of so the German invasion went virtually unopposed. At the end of the first day of the invasion most of the country was occupied. The Luxembourg government and royal family did managed to flee to France and would reach Britain and Canada via Portugal. The Grand Duchess Charlotte went into exile in London and became an important symbol of the countries unity. Her son Jean, the later Arch Duke of Luxembourg, joined the British army and took part in the fighting in Normandy near Caen, the liberation of Brussel and further fighting throughout the war.

After the invasion Luxembourg was first put under a military and later a civil adminis-tration before being annexed into the German Reich. The Nazis saw the people of Luxem-bourg as a ‘’Germanic race’’ and tried to convince the Luxembourg population that it was only natural for them to join the Nazi-German state. There was a collaborationist as well as a resistance movement present in Luxembourg but for the most part the population tried to keep out of trouble and went on with their daily lives as best they could. Before the German invasion some 3.900 Jews lived in Luxembourg. A large part of the Jewish population fled to France in May 1940. A further 1.500 Jews fled the country under order of the government in 1941 and tried to go to Spain and France. The Jews remaining in Luxembourg were transported to extermination camps and of these only a few managed to survive.

A large part of Luxembourg was liberated by American forces in September 1944. After the country was liberated the Luxembourg resistance movement set up a militia to pro-tect the country from any further German attack. This attack did take place in November 1944 when 250 men of the Waffen-SS tried to capture the town of Vianden where they were repelled by militia forces. In December 1944 the country as once again invaded by German forces during the battle of the Bulge. German armies penetrated the country in an attempt to break through to the west. After an unsuccessful campaign the German forces were once more pushed out of Luxembourg in the first months of 1945.

Historical introduction

Gelderland

In September 1944 Gelderland would become the main stage of the fighting in Western Europe. With Operation Market Garden the Allies attempted to capture bridges over se-veral large rivers to ensure a swift advance towards the heart of Germany. Paratroopers were dropped around Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Arnhem to capture and hold the bridges until they could be relieved by the ground forces. Unfortunately for the Allies the bridge at Arnhem turned out to be a bridge too far.

Overijssel

While in 1944 the southern parts of the Netherlands were largely liberated the Northern part of the country, including the province of Overijssel, remained in German hands. The population of Overijssel underwent several more months of occupation before they too were liberated in 1945. During these months Overijssel was bombed, saw actions of the re-sistance networks and was used by the Nazi’s as a launch site for V1 and V2 rockets against Antwerp and London.

North Brabant

In September 1944 the Allied forces reached the province of Noord Brabant during Opera-tion Market Garden. American paratroopers where dropped near Eindhoven, while ground forces pushed through the eastern part of Brabant. Via the Hell’s Highway they tried to reach the paratroopers in Nijmegen and Arnhem. The heavy fighting during this operation caused the death of many soldiers and civilians until late 1944, when the province was liberated. A frontline was formed on the Meuse river.

Limburg

Limburg was the first Dutch province to come into contact with the Allied liberators with Maastricht being the first large city to be liberated on the 14th of September 1944. After Operation Market Garden heavy fighting took place in Limburg as the Allies tried to push the German troops back across the Maas river. The Germans stuck to their ground tena-ciously and it would cost the lives of many soldiers and civilians before the entire province was liberated early in 1945.

Zeeland

Late 1944, Zeeland and the western part of Brabant became the scene of subsequent bat-tles. At stake was the control of the Scheldt river that flows through Zeeland. The Allies desperately needed a large harbour to supply their troops. They had captured Antwerp and its ports intact in September 1944 but they could not use the port while the German troops held the banks of the Scheldt. In the heavy fighting that ensued many lives were lost and enormous damage was done to the province by floods and fighting.

The Netherlands was occupied in 1940 after five days of heavy fighting. During the occu-pation thousands of civilians died in Allied bombings and as a result of the Nazi-rule. The Jewish population suffered especially greatly: three quarters of the Dutch Jews did not survive the war. In late 1944 the southern part of the country was liberated during Opera-tion Market Garden and the Battle of the Scheldt, while the north remained occupied until 1945.

The Netherlands

The Liberation Museum Zeeland show the moving history of Zeeland during the Se-cond World War. The museum also pays attention to the Zeeuwse war volunteers who served in the Dutch East Indies, direct-ly after the liberation.

The Battle of the Scheldt plays a central role in the museum. The Battle took place between 18 September and 8 November 1944. It disappeared unfairly to the back-ground of Dutch history because of the failed Battle of Arnhem. Not only did this Battle liberate a big part of the province Zeeland, but it also helped the Allies con-quer the essential harbour of Antwerp. Thanks to this, the jammed offensive could start again and the end of the war was approaching. However, what we cannot forget are the many victims (soldiers and civilians) and the overwhelming material damage the Battle caused. The Battle in Zeeland didn’t only make Zee-land the worst-hit province, it also resulted on the Canadian side in the most victims in the Second World War during one opera-tion in the Netherlands.

Liberty Park ZeelandAt the moment, the museum is being en-larged with a Zeeland Liberty Park (7 acres).

The concept of the Liberty Park is unique. Nowhere in Western-Europe can be found a similar design. The Park visualises the middle of the elements water, beach and dikes (which are particular for Zeeland) during the war period 1939-1945 and the Battle of the Scheldt in particular. In the

park a unique and preserved emergency church from Ellewoutsdijk was restored and rebuild. This emergency church was, after the destruction of the original church by bombings, reconstructed from so called ‘Nissenhutten’. From the summer of 2016 the church is open to visitors!

Sunset March

Sunset March is a daily tribute to the Allied soldiers who fought for the libe-ration of The Netherlands. And especi-ally for those soldiers who lost their lives. The March goes over the new City Bridge called: de Oversteek (meaning: Crossing). The bridge has been constructed at the location where 504 Parachute Infantry Regiment of US 82nd Airborne crossed the river the Waal on September 20, 1944 as part of Operation Market garden. 48 Allied soldiers lost their lives during this “Waalcrossing”. Each and every night a veteran walks the Sunset March at the ignition of the 48 pairs of street posts at sunset to honour the fallen soldiers.

Operation Market Garden and the Rhineland Offensive

In late 1944 and early 1945 the area around Nijmegen was to become the scene of some of the heaviest fighting on the Western front.

The bridges over the Waal river in Nijmegen were one of the main objectives of Operation Market Garden in September 1944. They were captured after heavy fighting by British forces and American paratroopers. Although the bridges at Nij-megen were successfully captured, Market Garden failed because the bridge at Arnhem could not be taken. Another way had to be found into Germany.

In early 1945 this way was found. Over 500.000 soldiers, 1.000 canon and 34.000 vehicles were assembled in the area around Nijmegen and Groesbeek for Ope-ration Veritable. This operation was part of the larger Rhineland Offensive and aimed to clear the area west of the Rhine in preparation for a crossing of the Rhine itself. It was the largest offensive ever initiated from Dutch soil and the largest operation in the Northwestern part of Europe.

Experience Freedom! From history came a modern museum, si-tuated between hills and woods and loca-ted in one of the most beautiful areas of the Netherlands. South-east of Nijmegen and Arnhem, history is brought back to life again at the National Liberation Museum 1944-1945. Operation Market Garden, the largest airborne operation in history took place here in September 1944 and Opera-tion Veritable, the Rhineland Offensive, the final road to freedom in Europe, started from here in February 1945. The museum shows the historical events of the libera-tion by the American, British, Canadian and Polish troops. In the museum, you also live through the period preceding the war, experience the occupation, celebrate the liberation and witness the rebuilding of the Netherlands and Europe after the war. Fragrances, interactive presentations, di-orama’s, models, original films and sound fragments captivatingly depict the libera-tion. The museum shows both young and old the current value and importance of democracy, freedom and human rights.

In 2016 the Liberation Museum will be offering special discounts for coach hire companies and tour operators – yet ano-ther reason to visit!

Hartenstein Villa is situated on the edge of Oosterbeek, this exquisite building is the Airborne Museum’s home. It was no coin-cidence that the museum was established in this villa. During the Battle of Arnhem,Hartenstein Villa was Major-General Urqu-hart’s British headquarters. The battle las-ted nine days, from the 17th till the 25th of September 1944. It was intended to bring a swift end to the Second World War, butthat is not what happened...

This underground space provides an im-mersive and imposing experience of the Battle of Arnhem. Stories of British, Polish and German soldiers come to life in Har-tenstein Villa. Civilians also play an im-portant role; they lived in mortal fear. The museum has a large collection of authentic weaponry, documents, footage and photo-graphs on display. Listen, watch and expe-rience the Airborne Experience!

Battle of Arnhem

In September 1944 Operation Market Garden, the largest airborne operation in history, took place in the Netherlands. The goal of the operation was to capture several key bridges in Holland and thus securing a quick route into Germany. In Arnhem a fierce battle was fought for control of the vital bridge over the Rhine river. Despite of the allied efforts the battle of Arnhem ended in failure and the bridge over the Rhine proved to be a bridge too far.

One architectural highlight in Arnhem is the Eusebius Church with its 93 metre tower. Construction work started in 1450; the church took over a century to com-plete. Historical introduction

Germany holds a unique position in the history of the Second World War. Hitler played a key role in the decision to go to war and to exterminate the Jews but it is important to re-member that he was supported by a majority of the German population. There were, ho-wever, also Germans that resisted against the regime and the German population itself also suffered greatly from the fighting and bombing campaigns. After the war Germany was split into two states until the reunification in 1990.

Hürtgen Forest

During the autumn of 1944 the Allied advance across Europe had brought them into Ger-many. In the Hürtgen Forest the longest battle on German soil would take place from Sep-tember 1944 till February 1945. Difficult terrain, bad weather and German fortifications meant that the allied advance was slow and came at a high cost. For the Allied soldiers fighting in the Hürtgenwald the first syllable of the name of the forest (hurt) became an omen of what was to be expected here.

Berlin

Berlin was where the last major battle of the Second World War was fought. By April 1945 the Red Army had pushed back the German armed forces from the outskirts of Moscow back to their own capital. In this final and decisive clash many soldiers and civilians lost their lives including Adolf Hitler himself who committed suicide in his bunker as the bat-tle for Berlin raged above him

Kreis Kleve

Early in 1945 the German municipality of Kleve became the scene of some of the heaviest fighting on the western front. After the failure of Operation Market Garden in September 1944 the Allies came up with a new plan to invade Germany: Operation Veritable. Over half a million troops were assembled along with vast amounts of material. Cities such as Kleve and Emmerich were bombed into the ground by the Allied air force. The scale of the destruction was almost unbelievable.

Germany

The Allied Museum tells a unique story: from the German defeat in the Second World War to the division of West and East Berlin between the three Western powers and the Soviet Union. The story begins in the summer of 1945. The victorious powers, the USA, Great Britain, France and the So-viet Union, aimed to free the German Reich of Nazism. Conflicts soon arose, however. The Western powers wanted to reconstruct Germany on the basis of capitalism and de-mocracy. The Soviet Union, in contrast, took its own communist social system as a mo-del. Berlin became one of the most impor-tant scenes of the struggle that has gone down in history as the Cold War.

The first part of the permanent exhibition in the former American Outpost Movie Theater explores the years 1945 to 1950. The themes are the Allied victory in 1945, the first years of the occupation, and the pro-cess of democratic renewal. The Berlin Air-lift during the Soviet blockade of 1948/49 is a central focus. The second part of the per-manent exhibition in the Nicholson Me-morial Library examines the period 1951 to 1994. The focus is on the military confron-tation between East and West. Berlin was an especially important scene of rivalries between opposing intelligence services

Apart from everyday life in the garrisons, the exhibition also highlights the events from German unity in 1990 to the with-drawal of the Western forces in 1994. Al-ongside the permanent exhibition, the temporary exhibitions address a variety of relevant topics. Events, film screenings and guided tours of the exhibitions round out the programme.

Historical introduction

The Second World War began with the invasion of Poland in September 1939. The country was attacked and occupied by both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Both occupying powers immediately established ruthless regimes that were responsible for the deaths of countless Polish citizens and especially Polish Jews. Nominally, Poland ended the war as one of the victors. In reality, as a result of the war, Poland lost its independence, half of its territory and its freedom.

Gdansk

On the 1st of September 1939 the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on the Westerplatte in Gdansk. These shots are regarded as the first shots of WWII. After se-veral days of fighting the Poles on the Westerplatte surrendered. After the war this battle became an important symbol of Polish resistance. In the 1970’s and 1980’s Gdansk would again become the scene of resistance in the form of the Solidarity Movement which play-ed a large role in the fall of the Soviet Union.

Museum of the Second World War

The mission of the Museum of the Second World War is to create a modern institu-tion that will present the history of the war as the greatest cataclysm of the 20th century. Despite the fact that over 75 years have passed since the outbreak of the Se-cond World War, no museum in Europe treats its course and nature comprehensi-vely. This makes our initiative timely. One of our museum’s main goals is to show the wartime experiences of Poland and the other countries of East-Central Europe.

The Museum of the Second World War was launched in November 2008 and is located in Gdansk. Gdansk, the city where the war broke out, was selected to be the seat of the Museum of the Second World War. The Museum is being built on a lot at Wałowa Street near the city centre and will be loca-ted in a symbolic architectural space, 200 metres from the historic Polish Post Office in Gdansk and 3 kilometres across the wa-ter from Westerplatte Peninsula, both of which were attacked in September 1939.

The Museum’s mission is to create a mo-dern institution that will narrate the story of the Second World War, the greatest ca-tastrophe of the 20th century. One of its main goals is to show the wartime expe-riences of Poland and the other countries of East-Central Europe. These were often different from what the people of Western Europe and of countries outside Europe lived through, and tend to be little known in the West.

The permanent exhibition will cover 5.000 square metres. This will make it one of the largest exhibitions in the world presented by a history museum. It will be divided into three narrative blocs. The first, The road to war, will cover the roots of the Second

World War. The second thematic bloc, The horrors of war, will show the experiences of ordinary people, lives of soldiers, prisoners of war, camp inmates. The third section of the exhibition, The war’s long shadow, will serve as a bridge between the end of the

war and its reper cussions: the downfall of the Third Reich, the liberation of Europe, the border changes and the post-war di-vision of the continent. Furthermore, the museum will serve as a centre of educa-tion, culture and research.

Point of Interest

Westerplatte

Westerplatte is well known all over the world as the place where World War II began on 1 September 1939. However, to Poles, this is primarily the location of the heroic battle of the crew of the Military Transit Storehouse with better-equipped German forces, which outnumbered them eighteen to one. The exhibition in the guardhouse recreates its interiors from 1939, with the designation of the battle stations of the crew, and presenta-tions of documentary photographs, we-apons and equipment of the soldiers of the Polish Army from 1939.

Historical introduction

Italy started out as an Axis partner but later switched sites and saw a German occupation of the Northern part of the country. The country served as the proving grounds for the D-Day landings. The amphibious assaults on Sicily and at Anzio provided the allies with extremely important information and experiences with beach landings. Furthermore, the battles in the Italian heartland and in the mountainous terrain including the famous battle of Monte Cassino will add new dimensions to the story we have already told in the first phase of the LRE.

The role of Italy during the war is quite ambivalent. The control of the population by the state never reached the level that the Nazi-party managed to achieve. Mussolini, the Ita-lian dictator, was overthrown by his own countrymen and it was only with the help of German forces that he was placed at the head of an German puppet state in Northern Italy. Italy switched sides during the war and its military achievements earned them little respect of contemporaries or from later historians. The position of the Italy in the collec-tive memory of World War II is difficult to capture in a few sentences. Italy saw the rise of dictatorship long before Hitler established power in Germany. The conquests of Italy in the 1930’s demonstrated that the system of the league of nations had failed and played a role in creating a violent atmosphere form which the Second World War would emerge. The performance of Italy during the war was quite abysmal and because of its military failures Germany was forced to intervene in Africa, the Balkans and Greece, causing de-lays and bleeding forces away from their main objectives.

Umbrella organization/destination marketingLiberation Route Europe is a connection between diverse locations and organizations throughout Europe around one central theme. This is a unique international cooperation with as main focus the perspective of the visitor/the broad public. With this approach, we also contribute to enhance the visibi-lity of the regions which were affected by the war, as specific touristic destinations. By joining forces into the same organization and under the same umbrella, we also create a larger transnational ensemble which is to be seen as a specific destination based on remembrance tourism.

MethodologyThe work of LRE can be divided into three main pillars

Multi-perspective approachHistorical experts play a significant role in this project. The museums and scientific partners developed within the Liberation Route Europe project the multi-perspective approach. This project is the first on a European scale to create a multinational per-spective on war, occupation and liberation. Especially biographical stories of civilians and soldiers connected to the Liberation Route demonstrate the complexity of the in-dividual war experiences of 1944/45. The partnership acknowledges that different nations have lived the war experience in different contexts and different perception, and gives this multi-perspective approach a central place in the project’s methodology.

Multidisciplinary approach and cooperationThe partnership and methodology of the Liberation Route Europe is based on mul-tidisciplinary cooperation. We operate as a network/umbrella organization in which scientific and historical research, tourism, (future oriented) commemoration, public presentation and visibility, as well as education come together and merge into one comprehensive approach. Therefore, the partnership consists of museums, govern-ments, tourism organizations and research/education institutions.
