Reels equipped with a recess have a shallow well in the outside center hub that can be used to coil up a few feet of the fixed end of the cable for more convenient storage and handling.
Reels with a lock have a pin or other mechanism that locks the hub in place and prevents the reel from accidentally unwinding when not in use.
Most reels are equipped with a stand and integrated handle, and are intended to be hand carried and portable. The pictured reel has a mountable base, and is intended to be welded or bolted in place (typical of reels intended for grounding applications).
Reels may be equipped with a brake that resists but does not prevent the hub from turning. This slows down the unreeling and helps prevent free-wheeling of cable off the reel.
Reel is equipped with a flange that can be used to coil up a few feet of the fixed end of the cable for more convenient storage and handling.
Some reels are intended for use in applications where the cable is used to electrically ground or connect components (i.e. for protection against static discharge). This requires that the reel has solid metal bushings between the cable hub and the base and a “clean” (non-anodized, non-painted) surface to ground the reel to a mounting surface.
Reels may be configured to accept a bulkhead connector on the fixed (reel) end of the cable. This allows users to connect the cable in-line without unspooling.
