TOUCHMARK AT HARWOOD GROVES

When Sunny Crahan visits the Touchmark Health & Fitness Club, it can be a family affair! Her good health, vitality, and commitment to her health and well-being have inspired her daughter and grandson to follow in her footsteps and join the club, as well.

But it’s not the opportunity for a chance encounter with family members that motivates this 91-year old to continue her regular visits to the club. She has never seen a sedentary lifestyle as an option. “I’ve never thought anything about staying active; it’s just the way I’ve always been,” says Sunny. “My mother lived to

be 101, so I’ve got to keep myself going. I better do something to make my health better while I’m here. I take it a day at a time and enjoy myself.”

A lifelong resident of Fargo areaSunny can’t imagine living anywhere else. “Fargo-Moorhead has three colleges, a symphony orchestra, and we don’t even have to go to Minneapolis for good theater,” she says. “We’re very fortunate, and I’ve always been grateful to live here.”

Born and raised in Minot, Sunny moved to Fargo, met her first husband, and enjoyed 47 years of marriage with him before he died. Just over two years later, she reconnected with her college boyfriend. They married and enjoyed 14 years together until his death. “I’ve had two wonderful husbands,” says Sunny. “With the happiness I’ve had in my life—even with the deaths of my husbands, and my oldest daughter died of cancer—I’ve never felt sorry for myself, I really felt that I was blessed. That makes a difference in how you age gracefully. Accept those difficult things without regret or anger. Regret and anger will age you. I tried to teach my girls that, and I think they have the same philosophy.”

So much to do!When Sunny moved to Touchmark nearly three years ago, she was no stranger to the Touchmark Health & Fitness

Club. She had been enjoying the club’s warm pool and water-exercise classes for two years before making Touchmark her home. “I’d had two knees and a hip replaced and couldn’t walk for exercise, so I decided to exercise in the water, and it has been wonderful,” she says. “I’m now good friends with the other people in the class. It’s really nice at my age to meet new, younger people. We stop for coffee and popcorn before I go back to my room.”

In addition to regular exercise, Sunny appreciates the many activities and opportunities offered by Touchmark. “They have something for us to do almost every day,” she says. “They bring in people to entertain, they bowl and have beanbag games—there’s always something going on. The Heritage Garden is beautiful, and they have teas, get-togethers, and wine-and-cheese gatherings. They take us to movies, symphonies, corn feeds, down to the lake—it’s absolutely wonderful.”

“I don’t feel like I’m 91, and I don’t dwell on it either.”Were it not for the passing days on the calendar, Sunny almost wouldn’t even realize she was aging. “I don’t feel my age at all. I sometimes feel like I’m 19, because I keep myself active, and I play a lot of bridge and cards—that’s my favorite hobby. I try everything you read about what to do and not do. My doctors ask me why I take so many vitamins, and I tell them

that I’ve done it for 30 years, so why stop? Then they say, ‘well you’re the healthiest 90-year old I’ve ever met!’”

Touchmark salutes Sunny for being a true champion of active aging and epitomizing how people are changing the way they age. She truly lives the {FULL} Life!

The “right” to happiness “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” – Thomas Jefferson

Is it a right or a privilege—the right to happiness, that is? Whatever your interpretation of the wording of the Declaration of Independence, it has become a multimillion-dollar business to help us all find our “right to happiness.”

We may have come equipped to pursue our own version of happiness, but North Americans seem to be endowed with the pursuit-of-happiness impulse. Many have the urge to find that greener pasture or nirvana … just over the hillside (or online, for that matter).

What does that mean? It means that the outdated definition of doing more, owning more, conquering the next challenge has become an ambition to “best” our neighbors, whether by straight-out purchase or credit. The snatch-and-grab phenomenon has become a job description for many and an “oh well” for our neighbors.

Interestingly, this is not true of those who live long and well. Studies repeatedly tell us that philanthropy and a spirit of

giving are essential to well-being. While it may not be the barn-raising or neighborhood party in this day and age, the impulse to help others is deeply imbedded. All of the current studies on “happiness” bear out the fact that compassion, concern, and action (in the way of helping hands or physical donations) make a difference in the quality of life we all seek.

So, pass up the infomercials and appeals you get in your mailbox to “feel good about yourself” with this tape or class. Release even an ongoing commitment to “feel good.” Instead, contact the Full Life wellness team at Touchmark at Harwood Groves to get involved in programs and services that do make a difference.
