2008 Foundation Highlights

n The Jean Baton Swindells Resource Center for Children and Families

expanded services to the Oregon coast by adding a fourth satellite site

in Toledo. Other satellite centers are located in Redmond, Medford

and Hood River. In Portland, more than 6,000 families used the

center’s resources in 2008.

n Russ and Ann Humberston were honored at the 2008 Heart of Gold

Dinner. The event raised $100,000 for augmentative communication.

The funds will provide staffing and equipment to give the residents at

the Center for Medically Fragile Children the ability to communicate,

some for the first time in their lives.

n The Center for Medically Fragile Children was able to reach out

to more than 20 families through the respite program. This is in

addition to caring for the 58 children who live at the center.

n The 2008 Partners in Health event, Providence Milwaukie Foundation’s

signature fund-raising gala, raised more than $61,000 to support

expanded endoscopy services. This record-setting amount, contributed

by generous individuals and corporations, provided significant

philanthropic momentum for the $1.4 million capital campaign.

n Outreach to our community is always a priority and helps fulfill our

Mission of treating the poor and vulnerable. Through foundation

funding, the clinic staff of Providence Family Medicine – Southeast

offers prenatal education, medical care and social services to low-

income pregnant women to help their babies get a healthy start

in life.

n The Emergency Department furthered its long-range expansion

plans with a second area of exam rooms. The foundation provided a

$30,000 grant for the project. This new area includes an automated

medication storage and dispensing unit.

n The 2008 opening of the Providence Cancer Center at Providence

Portland Medical Center marked a significant transformation to our

campus. Foundation donors played a key role in providing funds for

construction and for research conducted within the building.

n The foundation is grateful for the generous support that made the

following possible: Jill Lematta Learning Center, Earle M. Chiles

Conference Center, Bill Gray III Courtyard Garden, Stuvland Integrative

Medicine Clinic, Transitions: The Mary Clark Appearance Center, and

Moore Fountain of Hope, in memory of Rosemary Moore.

n Safeway Foundation committed $1 million for breast cancer research

at Providence by encouraging shoppers to donate by “rounding up”

at the cash register. Safeway’s support has been critical in developing

our breast cancer-specific research capabilities.

n A new cell sorter was purchased through the special appeal at the

2008 Festival of Trees. This half-million-dollar piece of equipment is

the heart of the research laboratory.

n Providence Brain Institute patients needing specialized neurological

care soon will benefit from a new intraoperative MRI suite. Thanks to

philanthropic support, the technologically advanced suite will open

in late 2009.

n Donor support is helping several research projects move forward.

The Optical Beacon Lumpectomy project is showing better surgery

outcomes for breast cancer patients. The integrative medicine team

is studying an encouraging yogurt-based therapy for chemotherapy

patients with mouth sores.

n Donors also responded to calls to establish two medical-record

registry projects to improve treatments for multiple sclerosis and

breast health. Also, the Oregon Medical Laser Center received a

$1.5 million grant from the u.S. Army to participate in national

research aimed at helping wounded soldiers

n Thanks to foundation donors, atrial fibrillation patients at Providence

Heart and Vascular Institute soon will have access to a new cardiac

rehabilitation center and a third electrophysiology lab.

Providence Brain institute is a virtual neurosciences center, bringing cohesive guidance to all neurology and neurosurgery services offered by Providence health & services in the Portland area. The institute focuses solely on patients

who suffer from diseases or injuries of the brain or spinal cord.Five years into its existence, the award-winning Providence Brain institute has a

solid clinical presence. it has a foundation of specialists, a framework of services and excellent technological furnishings.

Tom Lorish, M.D., medical director of neurosciences, orthopedics and rehabilita-tion, and of ambulatory services for Providence health & services in Portland, remembers when it all started. “We wanted to provide the very best neurological care to our community. Our vision is based on the Mission of Mother Joseph. We’re here to serve our community, and the patients we see here are among the most vulnerable.”

specialty services have become the “rooms” in the Providence Brain institute “house.” With stroke and Ms programs already in place, the institute collaborated more closely with Providence’s Gamma knife Center of Oregon and Providence Acute Rehabilitation Center. it also developed specialty programs for epilepsy, ALs, cognitive health, cranial and spine surgical services and Parkinson’s disease.

When Dr. Lorish considers the future of neurological services and the role Providence Brain institute will play, he likes what he sees.

“We’re in a new frontier,” says Dr. Lorish excitedly. “We can now do things in the brain that we couldn’t do before: Gamma knife. intraoperative MRi scanners. Deep brain stimulation. neurointerventional techniques. it’s a huge opportunity for us.”

What if …

What if everyone could be immunized against Alzheimer’s disease? What if the invading paralysis of Lou Gehrig’s disease could be stopped? What if a single medication could lower a person’s risk for

stroke, heart disease and peripheral artery disease? What if patients in small and rural communities had the same access to specialty medical care as patients living near urban medical centers?

Physicians at Providence Brain institute are in hot pursuit of answers to these and other questions. They are tackling the job with enthusiasm and determination.

in just one example, Providence Cognitive Assessment Clinic is engaged in national research that could significantly advance the way Alzheimer’s is diagnosed, treated and, eventually, prevented.

The most promising candidate among the clinical trials is a drug that eliminates the build-up of a sticky substance in the brain called amyloid beta protein. This protein is thought to “gum up” the workings of memory center neurons. The medication may stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and – better yet – allow the body’s natural functions to repair damaged brain circuits and improve memory.

Medication patches for Alzheimer’s patients also are being tested. When applied to a patient’s skin, the patch allows a slow, continuous dispersal of medication, as opposed to the sudden spike that occurs with other methods. This may reduce some disagreeable side effects of Alzheimer’s medications.

“Providence is uniquely positioned as a multi-hospital-based health care system to improve health care deliv-ery,” says Dr. Mega. “if we bring together the population data, a research team and physician leaders who drive clinical trials forward, we could help the worldwide efforts to eliminate Alzheimer’s and other neurological disorders.”

Everything a cancer patient needs – under one roof

The northwest’s oldest and most respected cancer care provider is also its most modern. In spring 2008, Providence Portland Medical Center threw open its doors and welcomed visitors to 490,000 square feet of new technology, new labs and patient rooms, and new treatment, education and counseling services. With the help of generous donor support, Providence has set the standard.

Providence Cancer Center is large enough to house the most sophisticated technology avail-

able anywhere, but small enough to gather every service a cancer patient needs under one roof.

Personalized service sets the tone with help locating doctors’ offices, recommending dining and extended-stay accommodations, or setting up impromptu tours. The smell of home cooking wafts through a galley kitchen and dining area reserved for patients and their families.

Gone are the noisy central nursing stations that are great for Tv drama, but less than ideal for patient care. When not at the bedside, nurses on the Providence inpatient oncology unit

Putting patients first

with access to the latest in cancer research

disperse to tactical pods where a fast check-in with fellow nurses and attending physicians can get them back to their patients so quickly that it almost seems they are in two places at once.

Physicians and nurses update charts and prepare medications at individual work stations outside patient rooms. This keeps care providers right where they are most needed – at the patient’s bedside. With the help of a privacy window into the hospital room, nurses can monitor their patients’ comfort without disturbing them.

Just off the center’s main thoroughfare on the first floor, the Jill Lematta Learning Center offers a peaceful retreat for reading or browsing the internet. Patients and families can visit with a full-time health educator or survivorship mentors from the Breast Cancer Outreach Program.

Patients also can attend free classes at the center, talk to a patient advocate or enjoy a massage. hour-long massage sessions not only provide some much-needed stress relief; if researchers are correct, they also may stimulate the immune system to fight disease. Licensed massage therapists at the stuvland integrative Medicine Clinic have special expertise in treating people undergoing cancer treatment. Acupuncture and nutrition services also are available.

With its cheery atmosphere and big, airy open spaces filled with light, Providence Cancer Center can almost make you forget you’re in a hospital.

Swindells branches out[PROviDEnCE ChiLD CEnTER]

It took 2,800 miles and three weeks traveling the state for Anne Saraceno, director of the Jean Baton Swindells Resource Center for Children and Families at Providence Child Center, to understand the concerns of families with special-needs children living far from a big city. What she discovered was a great need for a sustainable, personal presence in these communities. The journey toward setting up Swindells Center satellite facilities had begun.

When Carol and John Glaser’s son Jack was diagnosed with Down syndrome shortly after his birth, the couple learned it wasn’t easy finding answers to their questions about the disability in southern

Oregon’s Rogue valley. Little did the Glasers know that hours north in Portland, a plan was taking shape

to help families like theirs – families who live in outlying areas with limited resources for children with disabilities.

“A very generous gift from Ann and Bill swindells, [Jean’s parents] the major philanthropy source for the swindells Center, allowed us to open four satellite locations,” says saraceno.

A free resource, the swindells Center offers books, reference materials, training and seminars to families and caregivers of children with disabilities. On-site staff also help visitors and callers connect with a broad scope of resources and information regarding specific disabilities, as well as educational options, therapies and day-to-day issues.

in 2007, Providence opened similar resource facilities in hood River and Medford. “Providence already had a presence and services that we could partner with at Providence hood River Memorial hospital and Providence Medford Medical Center,” saraceno notes, and those campuses provided a natural home.

“We also really felt a need to have something in Central Oregon,” saraceno continues. so the swindells Center partnered with Deschutes Children’s Foundation to open a satellite facility in Redmond. A fourth site, with the support of Lincoln County school District, opened in Toledo in 2008.

Carol Glaser learned about the swindells Center in Portland when little Jack was a baby. she has borrowed books, kept in long-distance touch with staff for advice and support, and has visited there when taking Jack to therapy appointments in Portland.

And Glaser was even more delighted when the swindells Center opened its satellite just five miles away in Medford.

“i thought it was great because it was right here close to home. it’s a comfortable feeling to know that you have a resource much closer than Portland,” she says. “Without that, you feel kind of isolated. When you talk to someone from the center, you get inspiration; you get motivation. You say, ‘hey, i can do this!’”

Dying to live

World-class athlete and marathon winner

Alberto Salazar now coaches premier

athletes in life lessons, as well as running.

Alberto salazar walks across the nike World Campus in Beaverton with the elite runners he coaches. it’s a perfect training day. suddenly salazar feels dizzy. he drops to one knee. he collapses.

he is conscious but turning blue as paramedics rush him to Providence st. vincent Medical Center. There, experts work furiously to save a man who once won the 56-mile Comrades Marathon in south Africa. The heart of a lion is nearly lifeless.

salazar is taken into a cardiovascular lab, where interventional cardiologist Todd Caulfield, M.D., and the team began exploring his arteries. “We found two surprises,” says Dr. Caulfield. “Alberto had a significant amount of cardiovascular disease in multiple arteries, and yet no artery was so critically narrowed that i could look at it and say this is absolutely why he collapsed.” An ultrasound identified what appeared to be the worst artery and Dr. Caulfield inserted a stent to open the artery.

Alberto Salazar had won major marathons, but nearly two years ago, the pleasure of running had turned into a plodding necessity. He could no longer keep up with his peers, who seemed to be running so effortlessly. On June 30, 2007, he learned why.

Daily, salazar improved dramatically. his color returned. his energy grew. he even coached by phone and com-puter from his hospital room. At the end of salazar’s hospital stay, electro-physiologist Randy Jones, M.D., implanted a defibrillator in his chest. After reading the heart rhythm strips recorded by the paramedics who worked on salazar, Dr. Jones knew salazar had experienced ventricular fibrillation – sudden cardiac death.

Dr. Caulfield says the precise cause of salazar’s heart attack may never be known. salazar has a family history of heart disease. he takes blood pressure and cholesterol medications. he watches what he eats. Clearly, he exercises. sometimes all the things that can be done are done, and it’s not enough. That is when a person begins a lifelong relationship with a team of cardiac specialists.

so salazar’s life marathon continues with another team of coaches at his side – Providence heart and vascular institute specialists.

“God helps those who help themselves,” says salazar. “i have a firm belief i should seek the best doctors and do the very best to take care of myself. That is what God expects me to do.”

A simple thing to do[PROviDEnCE MiLWAUkiE FOUnDATOn]

After his father died of colon cancer, Mike Richardson, founder of Dark horse Comics in Milwaukie, decided to get screened regularly. it was a decision that may have saved his life.

The second-leading cause of cancer deaths in Oregon is colorectal cancer. Yet this disease is both highly preventable and, if detected early, highly curable. A colonoscopy offers the most effective way to detect colorectal cancer – and Providence Milwaukie Hospital is aiming to make this procedure more readily available.

May 1994 should have been the best of times for Mike Richardson. his film

company, Dark horse Entertainment, had just released its first big hit, “The Mask.” But Richardson wasn’t celebrat-ing. he was mourning the death of his father, who had died of colon cancer a few weeks after his 65th birthday.

The screening is such a simple thing to do, and it saves lives.

polyps in Richardson’s colon. Doctors

were able to remove them before they

became cancerous.

“he didn’t even get to cash his first retirement check,” says Richardson.

Colonoscopies – screenings for colorectal cancer – weren’t standard practice in 1994. But a neighbor had heard about them. With Richardson’s family history, he said he should look into it. he knew that Richardson’s grandmother also had died of intestinal cancer when Richardson was a young boy.

The friends made a pact to be screened. For Richardson, that was the first of

five screenings. The first four were normal. The fifth, in July 2008, revealed seven polyps. Three of the polyps were found to be precancerous.

“That was a scary thing to hear,” says Richardson. “But at the same time it felt great because they could erase them.”

Routine screenings – recommended at age 50 or earlier for those with a family history – enable doctors to detect and remove polyps before they become cancerous. Once colon cancer produces symptoms, it has most likely spread and the odds of survival are reduced.

“The screening is such a simple thing to do,” says Richardson, “and it saves

lives. i know people worry about it and there’s a bit of an embarrassment factor, but it’s a piece of cake. The worst part is getting up after the procedure because you’re so comfortable!”

Getting a colonoscopy should be as routine as any other health precaution, he adds.“People spend all this time working out and keeping their bodies healthy. it doesn’t

make sense to ignore this.”That’s a message Richardson is sharing with his six brothers and sisters. All but two

are over 50 and several have not had a colonoscopy yet. “i think they will now,” he says. “i think my scare shocked them.”

Providence Milwaukie Hospital has only one endoscopic procedure room to serve both inpatients and outpatients. The hospital will soon surpass its capacity of 1,500 annual screenings,

as the demand for endoscopic procedures is projected to increase at least 10 percent each year.

In response to this critical need, Providence Milwaukie is set to begin a 3,553-square-foot expansion of the endoscopic procedure area. This 18-month project will cost $1.4 million and will create two additional procedure rooms. Providence Milwaukie Foundation is raising funds toward this crucial project.

“This expansion will have a direct impact on providing excellent care for both patients in the hospital and those who are having a preventive endo-scopic procedure as an outpatient,” says Anne Wang, M.D., a physician with The Oregon Clinic and chair of gastroenterology at Providence Milwaukie Hospital.
