In this era of tattoo st#les and specialisations,

it(s ineitable that an artist like Jun !ill be

pigeonholed !ith a conenient label, but that

is not something that he is happ# about.

&When people use that !ord style, the# seem

to just casuall# thro! it around. I realise that

people are simpl# tr#ing to categorise a isual

representation, but !hen I(m !orking that(s

the last thing I(m thinking about. I(m not

creating a st#le and I(m not consciousl#

deciding to !ork in a certain !a#. I(m just

tr#ing to do the best job I can. Of course, oer

time, m# touch has emerged as something

recognisable. People tr# to slap on a label, but

I !ant to end up in a place !ere there is no

st#le. With preconceied notions, #ou(e

alread# bo"ed #ourself in.' Like most artists,

Jun feels that #ou can end up thinking too

much.

Whilst learning to tattoo, Jun decided that he

needed to go to back to school to formall#

stud# art and design. This, ho!eer, led to an

interesting epiphan#. &It !as onl# b# goingthrough all that stud#ing % fine art, product

design, adertising % that I realised I needed to

let go of eer#thing, so that m# !ork could

come from a place that !as reall# the ra!

source of creatiit#. Education is a structured

!a# for #our mind to learn and gro!, but at

the same time it is being conditioned. I had to

go through that to discoer the ne"t step.'

Jun finds creatie freedom in e"ploring

different artistic disciplines and tr#ing to find

the right balance bet!een them. &When #ou

are tattooing, there are so man# realities in

pla#. Its not just art, it(s also a surgical process,and of course it(s collaboratie too. I !ork

er# differentl# !hen I(m alone !ith just a

canas in front of me. With painting, it(s all #ou

more personal, but the source of the creatie

past to provide a stable foundation for the future

hat comes across is Jun&s love for this great

artform and his desire for it to be recognised as

Ste!art has recentl# finished a stunning Fudo M#oo bod# front. I !as interested to kno! ho!

it felt to !ork on, and eentuall# complete, a large piece such as this. When Ste!art tells me

it(s &a string of small ictories leading to eentual disappointment' !e both erupt into

laughter. &Seriousl# though', he continues, &as a tattooist I see each section in stages. First I

plan the si$e. Then I find the appropriate design reference and I make small adjustments to getit to fit perfectl#. That(s one small ictor#. Then I place it on to the bod# and put the line in,

OPINION

Whenever I"m sitting listening to my older

friends in tattooing talk about the good ol"

days" the old times, when tattooing was

underground, and had a little more mystery about it

I can"t help wishing that I"d been there. And this is

partly due to the changing attitudes and behaviours of

people outside tattooing. Years ago, people tried not to

get in the way of someone who was heavily tattooed;now, they"ll come up to you and tell you all about their

next idea for a tattoo, in memory of their grandma"s

friend"s next door neighbour"s dog. I"m obviously

talking about my own experiences here, but I"ll bet

they mirror some of yours!

Have you seen any changes in the tattoo industry that concern you?

I guess the main thing that bugs me is that there are so man" tattooers out there no, doing bad

tattoos out of their homes or garages. The" are destro"ing skin and the" are also destro"ing the

integrit" of this industr" that I love so much. That's a shame. I kno I am "oung and part of the

neer ave of tattoo artists, but I feel like there are just too man" people out there doing it for

the rong reasons.

Do you have any advice for young tattooers?

Get into a shop and learn the right a" to tattoo. A traditional apprenticeship is the best a" to

learn ho to tattoo ell and in a safe, sterile a". Dra ever" da", take some art classes to

e!pand "our artistic abilities, and sta" open minded. Be illing to learn and ork reall", reall"
