INTRODUCTION

1954 : Hindustan Steel Ltd. was created to oversee the Rourkela Steel Plant.

1959 : By now, HSL is responsible for two more plants in Bhilai and Durgapur.

1964 : Bokaro Steel Ltd. Is created. 1973 : The Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL)

is created as a holding company to oversee most of India’s iron & steel production.

1993 : India sets plans in motion to partially privatize SAIL.

2003 : SAIL’s output surpasses ten MT of saleable steel.

2009 : (jan-jun) SAIL became the world’s largest profit making steel company by leaving behind Tata & Arcelor-Mittal.
