The idea of having a cartoon character came about as a way of retaining the children's interest in the subject. By focusing on the character they would pay attention to all the rules, tips and measures that would be imparted.

On arrival, the children are divided into two groups. One group is given a tour of the site while the second is given a presentation on HSE standards and road safety along with a demonstration of basic first aid and proper disposal of oil.

The site tour focuses on the various facilities offered at the site such as regular fueling (super, diesel), car wash, tire shop, sun wash etc. Each of these features are explained in a manner that is uncomplicated and appealing to children. TOTAL Parco Pakistan Limited launched its first road safety campaign, "Activate Drive Safe" on April 7, 2006. The campaign utilized all media in varying degrees and was launched on a network of 118 retail stations.

The "Drive Safe" concept has proven to be a true image builder for Total Parco justifying its corporate slogan of "TOTAL Care, TOTAL Trust". The primary objective of the campaign was to work on the behavior of the vehicle drivers especially the youth. Using emotive imagery and matching words, it sought to make

the drivers aware of their responsibility in a major way and help them to change their driving habits. The ads simply but surely drove home the messages: "Wear a seat-belt", "Stop at a red light" and "Do not use a mobile phone while driving".

The distribution of free helmets, T-shirts and stickers on the network through an "activate your luck" promotion also added to the overall effect of the campaign and earned immense goodwill for the company.

Eleven renowned colleges of Pakistan were invited to join a contest organized by Total Parco. Four winners were named Road Safety Ambassadors through their individual creation of safety posters. The contest proved a great launching pad for the four Road Safety Ambassadors as they received tremendous media coverage.

Total Parco as a unit believes in the message that it was preaching, and the campaign kicked off with the senior management of Total Parco signing a declaration in a press conference to abide by the safety rules laid out in the campaign.

3.19) Every Drop makes an Ocean

With a presence worldwide, Total believes in helping the communities among which it operates. Working with specialized organizations, we continually assess and manage the impact of our industrial operations, helping us to monitor the health of people living or working near our facilities.

During the establishment of our bulk oil depot at Machike, a very comprehensive exercise for stakeholder mapping and risk assessment was carried out in order to ensure that the depot would not have any adverse impact on the surrounding areas The exercise results indicated that even though the establishment depot had no negative impact on the surrounding areas and their inhabitants there were some fundamental deficiencies in the area’s infrastructure.

One of the main deficiencies that came to surface was the lack of clean drinking water. The poor sewerage system and waste disposal system had permeated the area’s current water table with impurities resulting in several recurring health issues. The solution for this would be to bore deeper in order to reach a new water table and thus attain cleaner purer drinking water. To this end, Total Parco has set up two units with boring up to 300 ft. which is much lower than the existing water table with a tank for water storage along with an electric pump. The two units have been set up in two local schools in the area surrounding the depot with outlets both within and outside the school premises so that both the school children and the surrounding community can have access to the clean drinking water. This is but a drop in the ocean however we hope that by establishing two such units we can make a difference however small, in the living standards of the local community. Our aim is to establish a long and mutually beneficial relationship with the local community

3.20) Vapor Recovery for Retail stations – Reducing environmental impact

Two Vapor Recover systems installed at retail stations in Lahore. The system gives the filling station a large measure of environmental control helping it to recover fugitive vapors escaping from underground storage tanks during decantation causing environmental damage. The system also provides a reduction in the general atmospheric pollution levels.

Our aim is to have zero accident and operate without fatalities or significant incidents despite the difficult Environment in which we operate. TOTAL has gradually organized a process for evaluating and strengthening safety culture. This includes regular safety training and skills development, setting targets and performance monitoring, HSE communications and rewarding successful performance.

4.1) Safety Management System (SMS) -ISSSRS

To strengthen safety in its different units, Total uses Safety Management Systems (SMS) based on organizational principles and best practices recognized by the industry. After defining a safety policy and objectives, the means to implement it are set in motion. Then the results are measured and action plans are adjusted if need be.

ISSSRS (International Small Site Safety Rating System) is being implemented at TPPL storage facility. This Safety Management System is developed by DNV for TOTAL and implemented at the group level. TPPL has achieved the highest level rating 4 for its Machike Depot in Lahore , which is assessed by DNV as a third-party. This achievement reflects commitment from TPPL Management for maintaining highest safety standards at their facilities.

It helps to know how to prevent an incident in the workplace by properly operating machinery respond quickly to a dangerous/unsafe situation TOTAL has an extensive human resource, training & development system. Employees are selected as per pre-defined competence criteria. On joining, training orientation program covering awareness about TOTAL’s health, safety, environment & general rules with appropriate technical knowledge is being done for all employees to ensure that they are competent enough to perform their specific task in compliance with group standards.
