Parshat Noach and Arvut
A D'var Torah by th
e Teachers and Children of K
-2
13
It was Erev Yom Tov and my family was cooking in the kitchen. All o
f a sudden we heard a bang outside and
went ru
nning to see what had happened. A Jewish woman driving alone had been in a car accident and skidded
into the tre
e on our fro
nt la
wn. W
e went ru
nning to see if e
veryone was okay and called Hatzalah. The woman was
visibly shaken and feeling pain in her rig
ht side. I to
ld her to
remain calm, th
at help was on the way and that she
would be fin
e. I a
sked her w
ho I c
ould call to
accompany her to
the hospital and she gave me the phone number of
a local re
lative. She was very concerned about th
e contents of her tru
nk, glove compartm
ent and bags that w
ere in
the car. S
he asked me if I c
ould please empty out th
e car and take the things into my home and keep them for her
until s
he was able to come get th
em. I a
ssured her th
at w
as not a problem and waited with her w
hile help arriv
ed.
I told the officer on the scene that I w
ould be taking things into my home for th
e woman. The officer lo
oked
dumbstruck and asked “D
o you even know each other?” I s
miled. I w
anted to say “D
on’t y
ou know that KOL
YISRAEL AREIVIM ZEH LAZEH?” But in
stead I s
aid, “I th
ink we may have met at some point.” T
he officer (s
till a bit
in shock) needed to hear th
e woman’s statement th
at she indeed wanted a total stranger to
go through her car
and hold on to her th
ings.
Since then, I h
ave given a lot of th
ought to
our school’s theme of th
e year - a
rvut and what K-2’s children have
learned so far about caring for each other and how we could continue our le
arning throughout sefer B’reishit. L
ast
week we spoke about Hashem not w
anting us to live in a world of T
ohu V
avohu. Each day he added a new
dimension to the world until it w
as ultim
ately ready on the sixth day for A
dam
Haris
hon. But Hashem was not
finished. He said “L
o to
v h
eyot h
eadam
levado…
e’e
seh e
izer k
’negdo.” It is
not good for Adam to live alone. I w
ill
make a helpmate who can care for him and for w
hom he can care. Here we see the beginning of a
rvut.
In P
ars
hat N
oach, w
e see Hashem’s caring for us by having Noach build the ark and take his family and all th
e
animals with him. It is
interesting to note (id
ea by Rabbi Yisroel Gottlie
b) th
at all th
e animals came in pairs (kosher
animals were in pairs of 7, non-kosher in
1 pair). W
e might ta
ke fro
m this that th
e animals were also responsible
for one another (y
et another example of a
rvut). W
e learned that th
e te
vah that Noach built w
as a rectangle and
had 3 flo
ors. Noach and his family took care of th
e animals during the flo
od. From these examples we see
that a
rvut is
a Jewish value practiced not in
a vacuum but in
our in
teractions, and is expressed through caring for
others.
After th
e science, m
ath, lite
racy, and SMART Board experiences that th
e children of K-2 had learning about P
ars
hat
Noach, th
ey were asked, “W
hat Can You do to practice a
rvut?” H
ere are their w
onderful answers…
