cute alert! Since the fall, the Toronto Zoo has welcomed two new Grevy’s zebrafoals. The male Grevy's zebra (colt), named Luke, was born on November 22, 2013 to mom Shani anddad Jake. The female Grevy's zebra (filly), named Leia, was the Zoo’s first birth in 2014 and was bornon January 4 to mom Tori and dad Jake. The Toronto Zoo’s Endangered Species Reserve Fund supportsGrevy’s zebra conservation and is part of the Grevy’s zebra Species Survival Plan (SSP), which focuseson maintaining a genetically healthy captive population and on conservation efforts in the wild.

Thisnewborn Western lowland gorilla is the 10th baby of the critically endangeredspecies to be sired by Charles and born at the Toronto Zoo. In this case, our new baby gorilla’s name starts with “N” forNgozi, just like her older brother Nassir’s name. A contest to name the newbaby gorilla was held in April. The top names were presented to her father,Charles, through different food stations, each of which was marked with adifferent name and contained equally-favoured treats. BEAR NECESSITIES: ICE. FOOD. CUBS.PROGRAM AWARDED$100,000We are happy to announce that the Zoo wasawarded $100,000 from Shell’s FuellingChange initiative. This will support theZoo’s polar bear conservation, educationand research activities, directed towardsincreasing the population of this nationallythreatened species and inspiring people to live in ways that promote thewell-being of the natural world.

Conservation will focus on captive breeding and rearing of orphans, inaddition to reproductive and nutrition research. The Nutrition Study willinvolve putting two male polar bears, one at the Toronto Zoo and one inCochrane, Ontario, on a special diet and monitoring their developmentand health. The study is designed to support biological modeling withpolar bears, in order to guide decisions on how to provide nutritionalsupport to polar bears in the wild. Reproductive research will focus oninformation gained from the reproduction of our resident polar bears andany subsequent pregnancies and births. This award will also supporteducation activities, a new volunteer interpretive facility at the Polarbear exhibit and much more.
