PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATION In1949,EMDintroducedtheGP7.Thebasicdesignfollowedmostdieselswitcherswiththeadditionofashorthoodinsteadofanend-cab.Thehoodswerealsofullheighttobetteraccommodatethedieselengineandmechanicalandelectricalcomponents.
In1954EMDupgradedtheGP7tobecomethe1,750horsepowerGP9.Externally,thefirstGP9swerevirtuallyunchangedfromthelastGP7s.Laterversionswouldincludedifferentlouverarrangementsandthelastoneswouldcomewithouttheframeskirting.TheGP9wasavailablewithallofthefueltank,steamgenerator,anddynamicbrakeoptionsastheGP7,including“torpedotube”airtanksmountedontheroof.
ManyrailroadschosetorebuildtheirGP7sandGP9sforcontinuedservice.Oftentimes,itwascheapertodothisratherthanpurchasingbrand-newlocomotives.
