Topic: Review of the MoonBell RInger
Describe what an equinox is. How many times a year do we experience an equinox?
Objective
SWBAT: Describe the features, formation, and characteristics of the moon on a foldable.
InstructionsCreate a foldable with 3 columns
Label the columns
1. The Moon’s Surface
2. Characteristics of the Moon
3. The Origin of the Moon
The Moon’s SurfaceMaria- Dark, flat surfaces on the moon
Latin word for “seas”Hardened rock from lava flow that occurred 3-4 billion years
ago
Craters- Large, round pits on the moon’s surfaceSome craters are hundreds kilometers acroosCaused by the impact of meteors ( chunks of rock or dust
from space)
The Moon’s Surface Cont.Highlands- Light colored features on the surface of the moon known as highlands or mountains
Characteristics of the Moon Size and Density
3,476 kilometers in diameter ( a little less than the distance across the United States)
The moon only has 1/80th the mass of Earth
Temperature and Atmosphere Temperature on the moon’s surface ranges from -180 degrees Celcius to
130 degrees Celcius The moon has no atmosphere because of weak gravity that allows gases
to escape
Characteristics of the Moon Cont.Water• There is no liquid water
on the moon’s surface• There is evidence of
large patches of ice near the poles on the moon
Origin of the MoonCollision-ring theory
When Earth was very young, the solar system was full of rocky debris (some the size of planets)
Scientists theorize that a planet-sized object collided with Earth to form the moon
Material from the object and Earth’s outer layers was ejected into orbit around Earth where it formed a ring.
Gravity caused this material to combine to form the moon
