All seniors who are considering postsecondary education after high school should complete this application ASAP. The results are used by postsecondary institutions to determine eligibility for federal, state, and some local grants and loans. Waiting to complete the application may cause students to miss out on funding for which they may be eligible. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and get started now! Our district FAFSA Completion event is being hosted in the upcoming weeks. SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS

All students are encouraged to check their school’s counseling services page on a regular basis. This page often provides important updates and information to be aware of each year of high school. Click on your school mascot to be connected.

October is College Application Month! Each high school will host an Apply Kansas event this month to encourage all seniors to complete at least one application for postsecondary education. Check with your college and career advocate, or your counselor, for the date of the event at your school.

The Topeka Public Schools College and Career Fair will be held Wednesday, October 9th from 1:00-3:00PM at the TCALC. Over 100 college/universities and employers will be onsite to speak with students. Students who

are eligible to attend have received permission slips at their respective high schools. Schools attending include the following:

Tradition of Caring® Mortuary Science Scholarship Program Deadline: October 27th Requirements: Graduating senior who intends to enroll in a mortuary science program; must enroll in a minimum of 12 semester or 18 quarter hours in a mortuary science program accredited with the ABFSE; minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale; U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident Application: Online application, high school transcript, one (1) professional reference letter, one (1) character reference, 500-word essay about why you choose the mortuary science profession and provides and example that demonstrates one of their Core Values Amount: 14 awards (6-$3,500, 8-$500) VFW Post 1650

Requirements: High school senior planning to enroll in an accredited, non-profit four year college or university in the U.S.; US citizen or legal permanent resident Application: Online application including three (3) short essays Amount: $500 (2 awards) .

Seniors, can you believe it’s your last year of high school? The time moves so fast when you’re having fun! As you start making plans for life after high school, look through the list below to ensure you are on track. If you need help getting any of these tasks completed, contact your college counselor. OCTOBER __ October 1st--the 2018/2019 FAFSA is available! Complete and submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after Oct. 1. The FAFSA may be accessed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Completing the FAFSA online is recommended as it cuts the process down in about half of the normal time. You will need your 2016 tax information. You can select up to 10 schools to receive your FAFSA information. __Continue submitting college applications and drafting scholarship essays. A big deadline is November 1! __Request required letters of recommendation, at least three weeks in advance of the deadline, from your teachers, community leaders, and employers. Furnish an addressed, stamped envelope when making the request. __If applying for Early Decision, you should complete your application and request school transcripts at least three weeks in advance of deadline. Make sure to request that your ACT/SAT scores are included on your transcript. Remember, yours is not the only transcript being processed! __Start pursuing any outside local or private scholarships. Check the district scholarship page often for new opportunities. Watch for deadlines! __Register for the NCAA Clearinghouse if you are a Division I or II prospect. Student-athletes considering smaller colleges may need to register for NAIA Eligibility. __Check to see if your colleges require the CSS Profile for financial aid consideration. __Create/revise a professional resume and begin looking for employment, if desired.
