Reading is regarded as one of the main factors for socialization. It makes a significant contribution not only in the accumulation of social experience, but also in building values, instilling feelings, developing imagination, right attitude towards other people and ability for orientation in the world.

International studies show that the development of reading needs in childhood and teen years significantly contributes to building a sustainable further interest in reading for a lifetime.

In light of a larger study about the quality of literary education, in November 2016 we did a survey about reading attitudes among students from primary and secondary classes in our school, "Dimitar Talev". The measurement tool was a survey with questions and also the students had to select a favorite book by a Bulgarian and a foreign author. Students’ participation was voluntary. The students completed the survey in school and the time they had to do that wasn’t limited. The survey covered 220 students.

With an extremely dynamic development of cinema and video games reading is placed in a highly competitive environment. It has to compete for people’s time, resources and attention.

Summarizing the results of the survey we found that more active were the girls - 57.3%. The most active in the survey were the ten year olds - 30%, followed by 12 and 9 year olds, respectively 17, 3% and 16, 8%.

Children who read for pleasure in their spare time are mainly in primary school - 69.5 percent.

By foreign authors Astrid Lingrend with "Pippi Longstocking" won the love of young readers with whole 67 percent. Close to readers' interests proved also "Winnie the Pooh" with 43 percent, "Matilda" - 37% and "Alice in Wonderland" - 36%.

Not surprisingly, children from the primary school selected in the Top 3 of their favorite books "Patilan’s kingdom" - 60.8 %, "Ian Bibian" - 56.9 %, "Fairy World" – 49 %. They are written by some of the favorite Bulgarian children writers - Ran Bosilek, Elin Pelin and Angel Karaliychev. The characters not only entertain young

readers, but carry a strong emotional response and moral charge.

"Magic Pearl" is the only award for children's and youth literature in Bulgaria, whose jury are young people between 6 and 15 years old.

There are no books that children are taught in school among the nominated titles. Every child has the right to read ... modern literature. These books speak the language of the modern young people. It’s easy and enjoyable to “communicate” with these books.

And the illustrations in them are truly divine!

The children from our school, "Dimitar Talev", are included in this campaign every year. They are very happy because they touch the books of authors unknown to them. These new titles generate curiosity and desire for reading.
