It’s Australia’s turn to rock the PierWednesday as an electric group of Aussies
burst onto The Pier Wednesday, ushering indistinct blends of electronic, pop, alternativeand synth tunes. Infectious jams from up-and-coming pop stars Betty Who and Cxloe areguaranteed to have fans dancing up a storm.
“I just think it’s going to be a fun ‘end ofsummer’ party vibe,” said Liz Garo, who
helped curate the performers at Twilight onthe Pier as Vice President of Talent atSpaceland Presents. “Betty Who has such afun live showl.”
While she’s been crafting head-bobbingsingles for years, Sydney-born Betty Whomade her mark on pop culture in 2018 withappearances on ABC’s The Bachelorette anda remake of the Queer Eye theme song “AllThings (Just Keep Getting Better).” BettyWho’s reliable powerhouse performancesand support for the LGBTQ community havemade her a mainstay at Pride festivalsacross the country. So much so, OUT maga-zine recently called her a gay icon.
“It’s great. She’s been playing a lot of festi-vals and people just fall in love with her,” Garosaid. “Her performance is upbeat and fun anddancy and I think it’s perfect for The Pier.”
Before she takes the stage, electronicmusic producer Touch Sensitive will set the
scene with a more relaxed vibe. His 2013single “Pizza Guy” has 2.6 million listens onYouTube.
At the West End Stage, Australian-bornCxloe brings raw, honest lyrics and a fore-boding pop sound. Her appearance inSanta Monica brings her to the United Statesafter tour stops in Birsbane, Sydney,Melbourne, Newstead and Darlinghurst.
“We really wanted the feeling that youget all the way to the end of The Pier andyou can watch the sunset and take in thisawesome music and it’s a place to take a lit-tle bit of rest while listening to somethingawesome,” said Pier Director Negin Singh.
The stage in Pacific Park will pivot to arock vibe with indie band Death Bells. Garosaid the alternative group gets to the roots ofAustralian rock.

Los Angeles’s biggest weekly celebration ofstreet food will be serving up multicultural
eats every Wednesday this fall duringTwilight on the Pier. The carefully curatedvendors are the cherry on top of the immer-sive music festival that aims to be a beaconof cultural exchange.
“Nowadays people obsess about food inthe same way people have always obsessedabout music,” said Smorgasburg founder andgeneral manager Zach Brooks. “Food andmusic both reflect a very specific time andplace. It can evoke all those same emotions.”
Over the past two years, Smorgasburghas become the largest open-air food marketin Los Angeles, attracting as many as12,000 guests each week. Brooks said the
eclectic street food festival in downtown LosAngeles is a natural fit with the iconic con-cert series on the Santa Monica Pier. Theteams have worked together to hand-pickvendors that complement the eclectic lineupeach week.
During Latin Waves, for example, musicgoers listened to classic Cuban mambo jamsas The Ricans served up Mofogo, a beloved
Puerto Rican dish made with pickled, friedand mashed plantains. Nearby, Little LlamaPeruvian Tacos delighted concert goers withtheir 100 percent organic, hand-pressed corntortillas and mouth-watering fillings like pome-granate-glazed pork belly, garlic and gingermarinated beef and Peruvian potatoes.
When the Australians rock SantaMonica on Sept. 12, the Paramount Coffee
Project will keep fans caffeinated. The cof-fee house first launched in Sydney as a col-laborative project to explore roasting stylesand brewing methods while educating thecoffee aficionados who frequent the cafe. The Paramount Coffee Project later expand-ed to Los Angeles with a location onFairfax Avenue.
“Australia has a really great coffee cul-ture and Paramount really reflects that,”Brooks said. “I’m super excited to have themjoin us on the Pier.”
Fan favorite Cheezus, known for fun, funky and sophisticated grill cheese sand-wiches with ingredients like black summertruffles, fontina, comte and manchego, willbe on tap for multiple concert nights. SantaBarbara’s beloved Goa Taco has signed onfor Sept. 26.
With more food on the way,Smorgasburg’s Twilight offerings will berounded out by a record booth each nightwith tunes curated by Beat Swap Meet.
In addition to their curated vendors forTwilight on the Pier, Smorgasburg LA isopen from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. everySunday on the five-acre site of theAlameda Produce Market in DowntownLos Angeles.

The 2018 Twilight on the Pier series has a newtheme, new schedule and new layout but
sometimes, the more things change, the morethey stay the same and no matter how great theshow will be, getting here can be a hassle.
First off, if you drove here it’s OK, every-one makes mistakes. What is important is thatwe learn from them and the lesson here is thattraffic is terrible and public transit is great.
The Expo Line offers a direct connectionfrom Downtown Los Angeles to DowntownSanta Monica, just four short blocks to the Pier.
Even Santa Monicans can benefit from thetrain as the city’s two other stations, 26thSt./Bergamot and 17th St./Santa MonicaCollege are less than ten minutes to the terminus.
The regular fare is $1.75 one-way and thatincludes two hours of free transfers to otherMetro lines for those using a TAP card. TAPcards are $1 at TAP vending machines (avail-able at most stations) and onboard buses or$2 at pass vendor locations.
The reusable, credit-card sized passesallow customers to pre-load multi-ride passesor store cash.
The train’s great advantage is it avoids roadsaltogether but for those who can’t reach a sta-tion, busses are also a useful option. Most BigBlue Bus routes now have at least one stop with-in blocks of the Pier and at $1.25 per personper ride, it’s hard to beat the value of the bus.
Neighboring bus systems also bring ridersinto Downtown Santa Monica for a pittancecompared to parking prices.
If you want to get to the show but steerclear of all motorized transit options, bikesare the way to go. The Expo Line includes abike path connecting Santa Monica to itsneighboring cities and as bikes are allowedon the train, you can bike in and train home.If you do ride to the show, The City of SantaMonica will provide two free bike valet sta-tions on the South side of the Pier, so youcan check your bike in safely.
If you like the convenience of a bike but
don’t want the hassle of parking your own,Santa Monica has the Breeze Bike Share sys-tem (sponsored by Hulu).
Breeze has more than 500 bikes locatedat stations throughout the city and neighbor-ing communities. Bikes can be located viathe smartphone app or at one of the stations.Bikes have individual locking mechanismsand can unlocked with use of a membershipcard or entering an account number/pincode on the bike itself. Memberships providea finite amount of ride time per day or any-one can pick up a bike for $7 per hour.
Parking is available around the city if you
really, really want to drive. Prices vary basedon the lot you choose.
To plan trips, customers should visitmetro.net, www.bigbluebus.com/Routes-and-Schedules/ and www.culvercity.org/how-do-i-/find/culver-city-bus/bus-schedules.
If you want to get to the show on fourwheels, the best option is rideshare and Lyftis the preferred partner for the concerts.Riders can get dropped off at one of theconvenient downtown locations to avoid traf-fic on the way in and after the show, thedesignated pick-up at Main/Olympic willget you on the road in no-time.

With over nine million visitors a year, the Santa Monica Pier is a busy place
but it’s getting a little easier to get to andfrom the Pier’s many shows thanks to a newpartnership with Lyft.
The company has announced a 3-yearcollaboration focused on improving mobilityaround the Pier and Downtown SantaMonica that includes dedicated pickup anddrop-off locations for the concert series.
During Twilight on the Pier, The Free Rideshuttles will transport festival-goers from thePier to the dedicated pick-up zone at MainSt. & Olympic Dr. Lyft passengers cominginto town for the shows will be advised todepart at one of the Downtown drop-offlocations (based on their route) to avoidgridlock along Ocean.
Information about the system will come
from the app and via in person contacts.Allen Narcisse, GM of Lyft SouthernCalifornia said Lyft Ambassadors will bestationed on the Santa Monica Pier andalong the walkway towards the pick-upand drop-off zones to help direct passen-gers for a seamless, swift departure. Lyftwill have signage throughout the pierwith a map indicating our designatedPick Up/Drop Off locations. Furthermore,Lyft will have signage and additionalambassadors at the Pick Up/Drop Offlocation to help drivers find their passen-gers and ensure a swift egress. Prior tolarge events at the Pier, such as Twilighton the Pier, Lyft and the Pier will be shar-ing out these locations via email, social, blog and websites.
“We know that driving to and parkingat events like the Pier concerts is a majorpain point for passengers – they wouldrather enjoy their time at the event itselfwithout the hassle of finding a parking spot
and designating a driver,” said Narcisse.“We think that the best way to navigatepopular events is to streamline the wayspeople get rides to and from the Pier. Withdesignated pick-up and drop-off areas andon-site Brand Ambassadors, we are able toease and direct the flow of the pick-upprocess, making getting to and from eventsat the Pier less of a hassle.”
Narcisse said the Pier team were lookingfor solutions to help visitors avoid traffic andthat Lyft’s services are already integratedinto the City’s transit solutions making thepartnership a natural fit.
“By partnering with existing modes ofpublic transportation in Santa Monica, ourgoal is to encourage more people to sharethe ride to and from their favorite spots inthe city,” he said. “We are also workingwith Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus to bridgethe gap between public and private trans-portation modes with ease.”
Lyft currently operates the BBB Blue atNight program offering late-night Expo
riders a way to get home from the sta-tions and BBB is considering replacingsome weekend bus service with discount-ed Lyft service.
"Working with Lyft has provided usinvaluable insight,” said SMPC ExecutiveDirector Negin Singh. “Learning about theintricacies of ride share, and how we canbest implement a system that encouragesquicker service, safer drop offs and pickups, and better communication with drivers willimprove not just the Twilight on the Pierexperience, but all of our events.”
