One centre also offers an annual pampering day where children can have a massage, enjoy a foot spa and have their hair and nails done. In the past few years extra- curricular activities, including language and health and fitness lessons, for children between two and six have become the norm at childcare centres – and parents are lining up to enrol their offspring. Pippies at Balmoral offers Mighty Mites, a weekly program teaching children about a healthy lifestyle. The 30-minute session in- cludes a warm-up, cardiovascu- lar exercise, physical develop- ment games, yoga and meditation. Private daycare centre,Sally’s Place at GeorgesHeights, Mosman, offerseverything from dramaticyoga classes to a weeklysport program, Frenchlessons and cooking classeswith the centre’s full-timechef.

Extra-curricular activi-ties are included in thedaily fee, which rangesfrom $115 to $125, and thecentre is full with a waitinglist.

‘‘Most kids participate inthe extra-curricular ac-tivity on offer that day.They love it and it’s in-cluded in the price any-way,’’ owner Sally Locksaid.

‘‘Whilst we’re a bit moreexpensive than othercentres, there’s nothingelse like it in Sydney.’’

The centre’s pamperingday during school holidayslast year was a success, shesaid, with parents bookingtheir children in for mass-ages, manicures, foot spasand treatments. Hair-dressers were brought infor the day.

‘‘We will do it again thisyear because it was such asuccess,’’ Mrs Lock said.

Caroline Coupland’sdaughters Millie, who turnsthree this year, and

14-month-old Charlotte, at-tends the centre three daysa week.

Millie participates in thedramatic yoga – a mix be-tween yoga and drama – artand craft classes and musicprogram Kinder Musik.

‘‘She loves the yoga,’’ MrsCoupland said.

‘‘The centre does Frenchon Thursdays and ballet onFridays so it was reallyhard to pick what days tohave the kids there.

‘‘I can’t see how it couldbe too much for a child. It’snot like it’s jam-packedwith activities all day andactivities only go for half-an-hour.’’
