There are a number of scholarships offered by various countries and international bodies to ease the burden of tuition fee and living expenses of the students. With more than three lakh students going abroad for higher studies from India, we are provid-ing the information about the top scholarships offered by the Indian Trusts to study overseas.



The Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation offers Inlaks Scholarship for the students who wish to pursue their higher studies abroad. The Inlaks scholarship is offered to university courses and specific programmes.

University coursesThe Inlaks scholarships are offered to university courses in top American, UK and European universities. This scholar-ship offers $85,000 for the students and if it is not sufficient

to meet their expenses including tuition fee, the students must look for external resources for funding. The Founda-tion has joint scholarship schemes with the following uni-versities and institutes: Imperial College (London)

The prospective students from the following institutes applying for the scholarship need not look for external fund-ing in case they are selected for Inlaks Scholarship.

The Foundation does not provide scholarships for the stu-dents who wish to pursue the following courses: Engineering

Computer Science

Business Studies

Medicine

Public Health

Fashion Design

Music

Film AnimationHowever, the prospective students from Imperial College from London are offered Inlaks Scholarships for Engineer-ing and Computer Science.

Specific programmesThe Inlaks Foundation also gives out scholarships to indi-viduals who pursue research, training and professional improvement abroad either independently or attached to a university which may not lead to a degree. The candidates must submit:

An agreement with the institute for the specific pro-gramme

Eligibility to apply for Inlaks Scholarship The scholarship is opened only for Indian citizens. The

candidates must be Indian citizens and residents of India during the time of application.

The candidate must be holding a first class undergradu-ate degree from a recognised university in India. The candidates who hold a foreign university undergraduate degree and wish to apply for the scholarship must have been working in India for at least two years after the completion of the course.

The candidates who hold a foreign university postgradu-ate or PhD degree are not eligible to apply. The candi-dates who have enrolled for a postgraduate programme abroad and did not complete it are also not eligible to apply for the scholarship.

The candidates must have obtained admission in a reputed university abroad during the time of application for the scholarship. The candidates with no admission and pending admission decision are not eligible to apply for the scholarship.

The candidate must be below the age of 30 years during the time of application. The candidates who have already stated their course in a university abroad are not eligible to apply.



Application checklist for Inlaks Scholarship The candidates must submit the following documents dur-ing the application of Inlaks Scholarship: Completed application form

Evidence that he candidate got admission in a foreign university

Proof for the financial requirements of the university

Candidates in architecture, fine and applied arts, and related subjects must submit a maximum of 10 samples of their work on a CD / DVD only, giving the size of the original, the material used and the date of completion

Candidates for Film, Dance, Acting, and Music (Western classical singing) must submit three sets of CD / DVD

Evidence for any outstanding achievements and extra-curricular activities

Up to three letters of recommendations (not mandatory)

The academic transcripts to be brought during the time of interview

Selection process for Inlaks Scholarship The scholarship selection is held in three stages:

Stage 1: The candidates need to fill in the application form and send to the Inlaks office along with the given supporting documents before the deadline. The application forms will be out in January. The applications must be mailed to:

Mumbai 400021.India.Stage 2: The shortlisted candidates are called for an inter-view. The interviews will be held in Delhi and Mumbai in May or June.

Stage 3: The selection committee will select the best can-didates from the prelims to appear for the final round of the interview. The best finalists will be offered the scholarship.

The suitability of the course for the ambitions and future plans of the candidate

Inlaks Scholarship valueThe scholarship amount is up to $85,000 depending on the requirement of the candidate. The scholarship covers the tuition fee, living expenses and one-way ticket fare.

Inlaks - Imperial College Collaboration The Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation joins hands with Imperial College London to provide joint scholarships to the Indian students who wish to pursue PhD course (4 years) or Mas-ters programme. The scholarship covers the full tuition fee, living stipend and air tickets.



The J.N. Tata Endowment Scholarship is a loan schol-arship offered to the students who wish to pursue their postgraduate higher studies in a foreign coun-try. The scholarship is offered to any Indian national plan-ning to study abroad irrespective of the course and duration.

The candidate must be a citizen of India

The candidate must have obtained graduation from rec-ognised Indian university with high marks

The candidates in their last year of graduation are also eligible to apply

Academicians and mid-career professionals below the age of 45 years who wish to study abroad can also apply

The candidates must have applied for higher studies in any recognised university abroad

The candidates waiting for the admission decision can also apply for the scholarship

Duration of the Award:One time

Value of the AwardJ.N. Tata Endowment Scholarship is a loan scholarship of the amount ranges between Rs. 1.5 lakh and 6 lakh provided to the scholar on the basis of norms laid down by the trust. The trust will not provide the amount to cover the full tuition fee. The selected scholars will also be eligible for Jamsetji Tata Trust and a Travel Grant from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust worth up to Rs. 10 lakh.

If the scholarship is cancelled or the candidates change the citizenship status, the entire loan amount must be paid immediately

Eligibility: The candidate must have obtained a first class degree

from a recognised university in India or must be in his/

her last year of Bachelors study which will end before 30 June of the year of applying

The candidate must have submitted application to a university abroad for the course commencing between August of the current year and February of next year

The candidate must be an Indian citizen

Value of Award: A maximum of Rs.8 lakh per scholar, awarded to the top

Aga Khan International Scholarships are loan schol-arships given to the postgraduate students from developing countries who get admission in reputed universities abroad. The Foundation gives preference to Masters candidates, but the PhD candidates can also apply with recommendation from their professors for doctoral studies who need a PhD to fulfill their career objectives and goals.

Eligibility: The eligibility criteria for Aga Khan International Schol-

arships are:



The candidate must have obtained admission for a full time taught Masters course in a reputed institution

The candidate must not have exceeded the age of 30 years during the time of application

The candidate must be a citizen of one of the following countries:

The candidates doing short term courses are not eligible to apply

Duration of the award: One time

Value of Award:Aga Khan International Scholarships is a 50% loan and 50% grant scholarship given towards tuition fee and living expenses. The loan scholarship amount must be reimbursed with 5% service charge. A guarantor is needed to give the loan scholarship amount. The PhD candidates will be given the scholarship only for the first two years. Afterwards, they will have to look for other funding options.



The British Council IELTS scholarship 2015 is given to ten students from India this year who are planning to pursue a higher degree (both undergraduate and postgraduate) in an English speaking country. Till last year, the award was given to eight students.

How to apply?The students can either apply online or offline for British Council IELTS Award 2015. The candidates must complete a task of writing an essay in less than 300 words along with the application. The candidate can write on any one of the topics given below (2015 questions):

Eligibility:The eligibility criteria for British Council IELTS Award 2015 are: The candidate must be a resident and citizen of India

The candidate must have obtained admission for either undergraduate or graduate course in a recognised uni-versity in an English speaking country

The candidate must have appeared for IELTS test not earlier than 01 August 2013

The candidate must have obtained admission in a uni-versity which accepts IELTS score as English language proficiency test score

The candidate must have a minimum of 6.0 band score in the test

Value of Award:Rs 3 lakh
