The commercial cattlemen are our No. 1 priority. We are trying to provide bulls that fit their environment and make useful, long-lasting, fertile maternal cows that will keep their producers in the business for a long time. As you know, we have many Pathfinder cows in the background of our herd. We have hand-picked our cows one by one for over 17 years now. We feel like we have created something pretty special. We didn’t start with average cows, but rather hand selected ideal cows that we knew would work. We feel you have a real advantage when you invest in the right cows. The genetic differences in cattle shine in the performance of each individual. We know feeding cattle requires performance, feed conversion and carcass traits, while trying to keep a balance with the commercial cattlemen in mind. Our end goal is to produce bulls to go out and be useful and work over the long term. That means “our job is to produce genetics that make your cattle business more profitable.” We pay a great deal of attention to maternal, carcass traits, production, fertility and efficiency traits.

Thank you for taking the time to look at our sale offering. We have quality, uniformity, and production performance in this set of cattle on the sale. This is our opportunity to showcase our genetics and to be very grateful that our beef industry allows us to keep breeding better and better cattle. Technology today is amazing and mind- boggling. It has truly allowed us to become a student of numbers and grow a nice cow herd rapidly. The longer we are in this business and the busier we get, we have very little tolerance for cattle that require any kind of special treatment. They simply must be culled because there are too many good cattle out there to have to deal with that. Any commercial cattle you may see in the sale line-up are proven and good or they would not be in our herd or on our sale. We know their backgrounds and can assure you that you are looking at a good animal that will go to work for you. Our son Cooper has added two red bulls to the line - up this year. He has a passion for Red Angus cattle and a nice cow herd in place. Take a look at his crossbred red bulls. They pack a lot of power. CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. BIRTH WEIGHT (ACT BW)

WEANING (WW) WEIGHT RATIO AND YEARLING (YW) WEIGHT RATIO, are a direct comparison of one calf to all the others in his contemporary group. A ratio of 100 is average. Embryo transplant calves will have an ET in place of a ratio.INTERMUSCULAR FAT (IMF) RATIO, is the percentage of fat in the ribeye muscle. It is the primary factor in determining quality grade. Higher levels of intramuscular fat improve quality grade.RIBEYE AREA (REA) RATIO, the surface area of the ribeye muscle at the 12th rib interface on the beef forequarter. Ribeye area is expressed in square inches.ADJUSTED RIBEYE FAT, is an external fat measurement taken between the 12th and 13th rib. Rib fat is used in USDA yield grade calculation and is the most important determinant of retail yield.

The Pathfinder Angus program was started in 1978 in an effort to identify superior cows in the breed based on their records of performance from Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR). In identifying these superior cows, emphasis was placed on early puberty, breeding and early calving, followed by regularity of calving and above-average performance of the offspring.

While outstanding cows can be identified after their first or second calves, the Pathfinder Report requires a minimum of three calves from a cow to determine her regularity of calving and ability to produce superior calves for weaning weight year after year. In addition, an important part of the report is the list of bulls that have sired five or more qualifying females.

The program identifies Pathfinder Cows in herds actively involved in AHIR. First, the female must produce her first calf near the herd’s average age for first calving. More specifically, the maximum age accepted for first calving of a Pathfinder Cow is the within-herd average for first calving plus 30 days. The within-herd average is determined separately for each herd on AHIR. As a second criteria, the Pathfinder Cow must maintain a regular calving interval. The maximum calving interval is:

365 Days + ( 30 Days / Number of Calving Intervals)

Next, the Pathfinder Cow must produce at least three calves with an average weaning weight ratio of 105 to qualify for the report. A minimum of 10 herdmates or contemporaries must be evaluated together each year to determine the weight ratio. Additionally, her calves must be sired by registered Angus bulls. To continue to qualify each consecutive year, the cow must produce regularly and wean a calf that helps maintain the average weaning ratio of 105 or above. It is pointed out that once a cow is designated Pathfinder, she is always a Pathfinder, even though she might not qualify for listing each year.
