WellnessWednesday

APRIL IS NATIONAL LABORA-TORY MONTH. To mark the occasion, this month’s Wellness

Wednesday will bring you valuable information on how to interpret your lab results.

On Wednesday the 19th, pick up your healthy lunch special at the Coit Street Café. Then swing by the Wellness Wednesday table between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to fi nd out what your lab results can tell you about the state of your health.

By the way, did you know that, as an MCP or MCF employee, you can get your labwork done once each year at no cost to you?

Simply stop by the Outpatient Lab-oratory at the north end of MCP (close to the ED) with your hospital ID badge between 8 a.m.–5 p.m. After your blood is drawn, wait at least three days, then go to the Main Laboratory to pick up your results.

When you go to pick them up, be sure to carry some form of identifi cation, such as your driver’s license or hospital ID badge. Included in your results will be your cholesterol levels, complete blood count, and information on thy-roid, kidney, and liver function.

If you have questions about any of the fi ndings, please take them to your doctor, or call Employee Health.

Chaplain’s Corner

A Month That Contains Multitudes

APRIL IS A MONTH of many dimensions and emotions. It begins, needless to say, on April 1. With what is that particular date associated? Why, April Fools’ Day,

of course! It may not be an offi cial holiday, but it’s one that is nevertheless widely recognized and celebrated as an occasion for practical jokes and hoaxes.

Good Friday—April 14 this year—is observed by Christians as the day of Jesus’ suf-fering and death on the cross. The events leading to the crucifi xion are set in motion by Judas’ betrayal. After several religious trials, Jesus is fi nally brought before the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate. The Gospel accounts tell us that Pilate fi nds no fault with Jesus. Bowing to pressure from religious leaders and an unruly crowd, however, he sentences Jesus to death.

A lot of my job at MCP centers on helping people as they go through their own “Good Friday experiences.” We don’t want to accept that pain and suff ering come to all of us. The rain falls on good and bad alike.

Many of us do indeed live in a Good Friday world. How ready we seem to leave it right there, just short of healing, never embracing the hope of the resurrection.

It is on the Sunday following Good Friday that we discover the meaning of the season. In the Christian faith, Easter Day commemorates Jesus’ emergence from the tomb, alive. His conquest of death is the pivotal event of Christian history. It changes

everything, and marks the start of a new beginning. It is quite common, in our culture, to associate Easter with nothing

more than bunny rabbits and Easter egg hunts. In my time, I have participated in many such hunts. My father-in-

law used to organize one for the children and one for the adults. He would hide the plastic eggs behind his house, in the yard, in trees and in the fi eld beyond.

The little children hunted for their eggs in the yard. Those eggs were out in the open, easy to fi nd, and contained lots of candy.

The adults’ eggs were fi lled with cash. In my mind’s eye, I can pic-ture my grown daughters lining up with the rest of the contestants, waiting for the sig-nal to begin the hunt. They have running shoes on their feet, black shoe-polish under their eyes, bandanas around their heads, and their faces are tense with concentration.

When the signal comes, it is everyone for him/her self. The grownups sprint toward the more carefully concealed eggs hidden among the trees and in the fi eld. There is some friendly pushing and shoving as disputes break out over the custody of specifi c eggs. I have to say that it all made for an even funnier spectacle than the kids’ hunt did.

After Easter, National Healthcare Decisions Day aims to help people across the nation understand the value of advance healthcare planning. This year, NHDD will become a week-long event, extending from April 16 to 22.

When it comes to important healthcare decisions, it is very important for each of us to make his or her wishes known in advance. Usually, they are documented in an advance directive. This allows you to state your choices for medical treatment before you actually need such care.

The relevant forms go by the names “Directive to Physicians” and “Medical Power of Attorney.” If you need help fi lling them out, I will be glad to do so.

Blessings,Chaplain Garry

Language Services for a Diverse Patient Population

WERE YOU AWARE it is a patient’s right (and The Joint Commission’s expectation) that healthcare services be provided in his or her preferred language?

MCP/MCF fulfills this mandate at no charge, and in a way that staff members can easily access. We use Cyracom as our interpretation service. Connecting to it can be done through Spectralink, desk

phones, or Cyracom’s own blue phones. If you aren’t familiar with the steps involved in calling a certified interpreter, ask your manager or supervi-

sor to give you a demonstration. Sign language is also available through remote video interpretation. The Joint Commission requires that, in order for an employee to act as an interpreter for a patient, he or

she must have already demonstrated proficiency in the patient’s preferred language. If this is a service you would be interested in providing to our patients, please contact Janea Carrington in Human Resources to schedule an assessment.

The list at the right shows the 10 languages for which interpretation services were most frequently provided in the past 12 months. It is striking evidence of the language diversity found within our patient population.

This information comes from the Population Specific Council, in collaboration with Guest Services.

MCP Campus Project Update

THE THIRD-FLOOR RENOVATION of Building II on the Plano campus has officially begun.

The project will bring online an additional 19 beds, in what will initially be a Med-Surg unit. Plans also call for a refresh of the ground-floor visitor bathrooms and waiting area. Completion is expected by year’s end.

Meanwhile, our rebranding project continues early this month with the updating of exterior signage.

Phase I includes the large signs attached to building exteri-ors, as well as the two street-facing monument signs.

It’s an exciting way for us to introduce our new name to the community.

Grief Support Center Pays Tribute to Ginny Robinson

HATS OFF to Ginny Robinson, manager of Women’s Services at MCP, who on March 20

received the Founders Award from the Journey of Hope Grief Support Center.

Journey of Hope is a Plano-based non-profit organization that provides support to those grieving the death of a loved one. Its services are provided especially to children and adoles-cents, but also extend to their parents or adult caregivers.

Ginny was cited by Journey of Hope as someone who has been “a vital force … in providing outstanding programs.”

“Your expertise in the field of grief and your willingness to share with others have been of great benefit to the families,” said the center’s directors in their letter of commendation.

Ginny was active in the formation of Journey of Hope in the late ’90s. It maintains offices across the street from MCP’s main hospital.

Since July 1989, Ginny has served as the lead moderator and facilitator for the Healing Matters Support Group at MCP. The group is for couples mourning the loss of an infant.

Health Setback Doesn’t Deter Pharmacy Student

CONGRATULATIONS to our patient, Joseph Lee!Illness prevented Joseph from attending the white-coat ceremony that

formally welcomes students into the University of North Texas Health Science Center’s College of Pharmacy.

So, on March 3, a delegation of UNTHSC faculty members came to Joseph’s bed-side at MCP and personally presented him with his white coat, symbolizing the start of his pharmacy career and commitment to the principles of service and care that underlie it.

The hearts of all in attendance at the impromptu ceremony were warmed by Joseph’s big smile and excitement at having achieved such an important professional milestone. Chad Friece, director of Pharmacy Services at MCP, stands to Joseph’s immediate right in the picture above.

Joseph has been accepted into UNTHSC’s Doctor of Pharmacy program as a member of the Class of 2020.

AT THE BEGINNING OF MARCH, Medical City Plano/Medical City Frisco came to the successful conclusion of its third Magnet site-visit appraisal.

Our application for Magnet re-designation had been submitted last October. That document consisted of 97 narrative documents (totaling 327 pages), 163 attachments, 197 pieces of evidence, and 161 outcome graphs.

The appraisers spent three months reviewing the application prior to their site visit. The purpose of their visit was to verify what was in the written documents, clarify any questions they had, and amplify those stories to identify exemplars of best practices.

During the site visit, the appraiser spoke to nearly 500 staff members, physicians, and community lead-ers. These conversations took place in a variety of settings, including breakfast meetings, lunch meetings, and tours of all departments and units on both campuses. In addition, they met with 15 specialty groups, and listened to presentations about our professional practice model and evidence-based practices.

Although this recognition is awarded by the ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) for nurses, in reality it recognizes the entire team of professionals who work at MCP/MCF. The appraisers cited sev-eral of our multi-disciplinary initiatives as best-practice exemplars, including EMS Medical Control, the collaboration with Plano ISD’s program for teen mothers, and the teamwork required to integrate MCF’s operations with those of MCP.

In their exit interview, the members of the survey team commended the teamwork they witnessed at MCP/MCF, as well as the strong relationship between the medical and hospital staff s, the commitment to professional development, the ability to innovate, and the commitment to serving the needs of our com-munity.

A tremendous debt of gratitude is owed to those who assisted in compiling the application document, as well as those who helped host the site visit. We especially wish to acknowledge the contributions of the following persons:

PRESENTERS: Jessy Mathew, Nidhi Singh, Amy Bowers, Jeanne Cross, Dee Williams, Ginny Robinson, Susan Seitz, Lisa Ayala, Tabitha South, Jennifer Germarino, Christie Gutierrez, Sharon Wacht, Amy Atnip, Isabelle Njomgang, and Katie RothardtESCORTS: Lisa Bryan, Karishma Patel, Stacy Varghese, Brin Morris, Andrea Abbott, Shannon Biggers, and Elizabeth Doyle

Special thanks also go to Emily Romano, chair of the Professional Practice Committee, and Mary Bailie, who has served as the Magnet coordinator throughout this journey.

However, the journey has not yet reached its fi nal destination. Although the site visit went very well, the Magnet Commission must now calculate our scores. It is our hope that this process will be completed sometime this month.

In MemoriamPatricia Ann HillAugust 19, 1953—March 9, 2017

PATRICIA “PAT” HILL, who passed away in our hospital on March 9, was a much-loved

administrative assistant in Respiratory Therapy for 17 years.

She will be remembered by all who knew her as a warm, friendly, and caring member of our MCP family—someone who always shared a smile and heartfelt greeting with those she passed in the hallway or greeted on the telephone.

Our Patients Speak

A NUMBER OF RECENT patient comments illustrate “Excellence Always” being put into practice:

“Dr. Schaffer was absolutely terrific – he explained the tests he needed to take and the reasons for each one. He also reviewed all the results and made cer-tain I understood the need and use of medications he prescribed.” (Medical City Plano ER)

“The service was excellent. I felt like we were at a five-star hotel. The accommodations were wonder-ful, our nurses were courteous and caring. They checked on us regularly. It was a very pleasant experience from the moment we arrived at the hos-pital till the moment we left.” (Medical City Frisco)

“New, clean, beautiful facility but more important-ly excellent care from doctors involved and ALL hospital staff. It was obvious they care about the patient experience. Excellent and COMPETENT care from my doctors!” (Medical City Frisco)

“I am very impressed with the changes to the reception area. I am amazed as to the fast response of care in the Emergency Room. Been there a few times, this was the best of all.” (MCP Emergency Department)

“I received the most caring service that I could possibly imagine, from the woman who cleaned my room up to the doctors. Anyone and everyone, never left my room without asking, if I had further questions or if they could do something more for me.” (6th Floor)

“The care I received was exceptional. The nursing staff you have at Medical Center Plano is phe-nomenal, they were so attentive, so nice, tried to make me feel better when I did not feel good at all. I would go back to Medical Center Plano in a heartbeat, for any illness or surgery that I needed.” (4th Floor/Oncology)

“Labor and Delivery as well as Postpartum staff were awesome. As a fellow RN, the nursing staff was wonderful, made me feel safe, and were super professional—thanks for a great experience!” (Women’s Services)

“The ER staff, the nurses and techs on the 7th Floor and everyone I encountered were simply…EXCEL-LENT!” (Cardiac Stepdown)

“Agnes made the CT Scan very simple, painless, and quick! She’s really good at what she does, in-cluding asking me how I am and informing about each step of the procedure!” (Radiology/CT)

“The technician who performed the bloodwork was great. She was very professional and competent. I believe her name was Michele. She made me feel comfortable and explained everything. She gets a five-star rating.” (MCP Laboratory)

Desk Etiquette

IN LAST MONTH’S “Communication Matters” podcast, CNE Sandy Haire shared an “Excellence Always” tip for good desk etiquette.

Always remember that, when a guest approaches your desk or work station, you should stop what you’re doing, smile, and ask how you can help.

Then provide, to the best of your ability, whatever information has been requested, and inquire whether you can be of further assistance.

Perhaps you can escort the guest to the desired destination, or offer to connect him or her with someone who can supply additional help.

It all goes toward making a positive first impression, and letting our patients, visitors, and other guests know they are important to us.

Thank you for making “Excellence Always” a daily commitment.

April Standard of the Month

What Does Right Look Like?

“Safety”

THIS NEW SPOTLIGHT

shines the light on one sta£ member who is frequently complimented on patient comment cards or letters.

As a member of the hospital’s Security staff , it’s John Ryder’s job to safeguard the welfare of our patients, visitors, and staff . John goes way above and beyond, however, in carrying out his duties. He is constantly looking for ways to help improve safety, both at Medical City Plano and Medical City ER Plano. Safety measures championed by John include the removal of trip hazards, and the slowing of parking-lot traffi c to ensure all our Life Safety systems and devices are in good working order. John takes part in training not only fellow members of our Security staff , but those in other departments as well. He is truly dedicated to Safety.

When it comes to “great catches,” Linh Tran, of our Inpatient Rehab Unit, is the standard by which others should be measured. She maintains a high awareness of patient safety and intervenes to improve outcomes. From identifying process barriers to developing new tools and guidelines that help protect our patients, Linh is highly skilled and vigilant about main-taining an environment-of-safety.

Linh’s most recent great catch required her to investigate and trace a patient’s medication reconciliation history during her entire hospital stay. As a result, Linh was able to prevent the patient from receiving a mood-altering medication that had inadvertently been entered as a home medication.

Linh is a paragon of good patient-safety practices—truly one of MCP’s best!

A Message fromthe CEO

Excellence on Parade

DURING THE MONTH OF MARCH we had a chance to show Magnet surveyors how

our culture of nursing excellence has continued to flourish, a full decade after we were first recognized by the program.

Sandy Haire and her team have been working hard to secure the third renewal of our Magnet designation, as you’ll read on page 7. We congratulate them and everyone else involved in hosting the successful site survey, which is expected to end in our official re-designation before the month is out.

While we’re on the subject of nursing excellence, let’s be sure to include the accolade recently bestowed on our Ortho/Trauma unit. It was singled out for Honorable Mention in HCA’s “Unit of Distinction” awards program.

Keep reading for still more examples of how we’re driven to do a better job each day meeting the healthcare needs of the people we serve.

Awards of DistinctionI hope you were able to attend the ceremony and celebration on March 31, when we announced the recipients of several presti-gious honors. Congratulations to this year’s winners of the highest awards HCA bestows:

Watch for photos from the event in the next CityLife.

Coming Up in AprilYou’ll see on page 3 that Employee Forums are planned this month on both campuses. I encourage you to attend one for an update on developments around our three pillars of success – Quality, Service, and Stewardship. A nice gift will be waiting for you as you leave the session.

Also, be sure to read the information at the right, which dis-cusses the long-awaited transition to our new uniforms. Thanks for your flexibility and cooperation as we’ve progressed through this piece of the rebranding process.

Another prominent piece of that process will be put into place this month, when our new exterior signs go up. Soon, the entire community will see our new name and know we’re part of the Medical City family.

What isn’t changing, though, is our dedication to excellence, and to embracing our heritage as the healthcare leader for Collin and adjoining counties.

Thank you for joining me in the commitment to Excellence Always.

Go-Live Date for New Uniforms

IT’S OFFICIAL! Monday, April 17, has been set as the date to transition all uniforms to the new Medical City Healthcare brand. Please review the following

important excerpts from the new dress-code policy, which pertain specifically to staff in patient-care areas.

The purpose of the policy is to ensure that employees of MCP and MCF always present a positive, professional image to patients, visitors, and co-workers. Being appropriately dressed when on-duty, and embracing role-identity through consistency in uniform selection, are criti-cal to gaining the confidence and trust of those we encounter as we go about our jobs.

Dress Code Excerpts for Patient-Care Areas“Patient-care area” is defined as any area in which patients are present for clinical reasons.

Badge: Identification badges must be visible at all times on the upper right chest. Picture and title must be front-facing. No lanyards, cords or chains around the neck to hold the badge will be permitted. Badge holders will be provided by the hospital. No outside vendor badge holders are to be used.

Shoes: Closed toe shoes are required in patient care areas. They should be constructed of non-absorbent material with slip resistant soles. Mesh athlet-ic shoes that do not have a leather or man-made lining under the mesh are not permitted. Also prohibited are Mary Jane-style shoes, Croc/Croc-like with holes, slip-on shoes that are backless, and flip-flops. Footwear should coordinate with the assigned scrub or uniform color.

Jewelry: Jewelry should be small to not interfere with equipment or job duties. No more than two pierced earrings per ear and no other piercings on any other visible part of the body is permitted. Earrings should be no larger than one half-inch in diameter. Staff may only wear message pin or buttons that are provided by the hospital.

Body Art/Body Modification: Visible body art and/or modifications are to be covered while on duty. Body art or modification that is not feasible to be covered on a daily basis will be addressed individually by the department leader or Human Resources.

Logos: Uniforms or clothing displaying a logo other than Medical City Healthcare will not be allowed, including jackets with the old Medical Cen-ter of Plano or “Take me to Plano” logo. A logoed scrub top is required under the logoed scrub jacket that is approved as part of the uniform standard.

T-shirts: White, black, navy, red or color-matching t-shirt/undershirts (short or long sleeve) are allowed under the scrub top for warmth. T-shirts cannot be worn in place of the scrub top, unless specifically approved by the CEO for a specific date.

IMPORTANT: This is not a complete list of dress-code standards. To review the policy in full, please consult the HR Answers portal, or speak with your manager.
