The ACA is in its 7th year now, going from strength to strength–we’re seeing more support than ever from companies entering and sponsoring, and we had one of the liveliest ACA judg-ing days we’ve ever had. Expert judges, based all over the world, assessed contestants on relevance and clarity of content, customer testimonials, and financial data, to select the most compelling entry in each category. Congratulations to the winners, who can be confident that an independent panel deemed them the best.

The pace of change is fast and unrelenting but a common theme across categories is the impact of digital transformation on everyday life and lifestyles, particularly as competition for capturing the hearts and minds of users intensifies. Creating a memorable and positive experi-ence for customers now features in brand campaigns and it is a driving factor in re-shaping culture to align with business strategy.

‘Fast and agile’ is the mantra of customers who are ever more demanding and who want their expectations met by their suppliers. The standard of entries this year reflects the impres-sive effort that telcos in Asia are making to use the latest technology to address the dynamic and ever-changing expectations of corporate and consumer customers, while vendors are helping them to transform their infrastructure to be more efficient and effective.

Smart Communications launched the Welcome Change campaign to communicate its ongoing digital transformation as it embarked on a $1 billion network upgrade programme, and to boost its mobile data business by encouraging more Filipinos to embrace a digital lifestyle.

The campaign saw Smart adopt a new logo, and produce video, digital and social media ads highlighting its role in helping people overcome their differences and strengthen personal relationships. Two new tariffs accompanied the campaign.

Welcome Change exceeded Smart’s expectations, driving strong financial and operational growth. One of its promotional price plans reached 190% of its target activations in just a month. “A well designed and executed campaign with evidence of good measurable results,” said one of our judges. “The growth in revenue for mobile data, broadband and digital platforms speaks for itself,” said another.

Airtel Business’ SAARC Connect initiative aims to lower the barriers to doing business in emerging markets by doing what a telco does best: deploying high-capacity backbone networks. So far, it has launched in Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. In 2016, Airtel Business also broke ground in Myanmar, a country that until recently had one of the world’s lowest Internet penetration rates, and just one subsea cable for international connectivity serving a population of 53 million.

In Bangladesh alone, improved Internet connectivity enabled by SAARC Connect has helped to improve uptime, connection speed, and most importantly, lower the price of broadband access.

The judges were impressed with the scale of Airtel Business’ ambition. “The implications for users in a number of emerging markets could be profound,” said one member of the panel.

Telstra’s Cloud Gateway enables enterprise customers to connect multiple cloud environments, giving them the flexibility to configure their own infrastructure according to the unique demands of their business.

Australian customers can use it to connect to Microsoft Azure, AWS, IBM SoftLayer, and VMware vCloud Air, while international customers can currently connect to AWS and IBM SoftLayer; more SaaS platforms are in the pipeline. Telstra has already recorded strong revenue growth from cloud services.

Telstra’s entry went down well with the judging panel, which was on the lookout for solutions that address the latest industry trends. “Telstra’s Cloud Gateway seems to offer a pragmatic solution to supporting companies operating in a multi-cloud world,” said one judge, while another said that Telstra is doing more than any other carrier to drive inter-cloud and multicloud interconnectivity.

In this category, the judges were looking for a project that delivered a step-change in operational excellence, and that is exactly what Ooredoo Myanmar’s 4G network transformation achieved.

The operator planned and executed a sweeping network upgrade in just three months, achieving population coverage of 4.6 million. Ooredoo also drove strong service uptake by offering 4G services for the same price as 3G services, and by launching affordable 4G devices. Local celebrities were also enlisted to inform consumers about the benefits of high-speed mobile broadband.

Ooredoo Myanmar’s entry certainly caught the attention of the judges, with one member of the panel concluding that the operator had done a successful job of describing “an ambitious, well-executed network upgrade in a fast-growing, but low ARPU market”.

eSports, or professional video-gaming, is a fast-growing area, attracting millions of spectators from all over the world, and in Asia, they don’t come much bigger than the League of Legends Master Series (LMS).

For the Summer Playoffs Grand Final in Hong Kong, PCCW Global established in two weeks direct fibre connectivity between the event and the game servers in Taiwan. This provided the high capacity and low latency connectivity required by professional gamers, who can send more than 300 commands per minute to the server. The project proved so successful, PCCW Global won a contract with the Electronic Sports League (ESL), the largest eSports company in the world.

“PCCW Global seized what has proved to be a lucrative opportunity, which is what good business is all about,” enthused one judge. Another said PCCW Global served as “a good example of a carrier responding to the customised needs of a client”.

Indosat Ooredoo’s Kota Digital platform can be used to create and deliver a range of smart city services, for which there is a vital need in Indonesia, as it transitions from a rural to an urban economy.

Designed as a portal, Kota Digital focuses on six fundamental areas: smart governance, smart mobility, smart economy, smart living, smart environment, and smart people. It has been rolled out by, or is in the process of being rolled out by no fewer than 42 cities and municipalities in a bid to enable Indonesia’s rapidly-grow-ing cities to become more adept at delivering public services.

Indosat Ooredoo’s ambition and the early traction gained by Kota Digital made the entry stand out above all others. “An all-encompassing platform that will genuinely improve how cities function,” concluded one judge. “This is an excellent example of how a developing country can put itself on the digital world map,” said another.

NTT Communications’ IoT platform draws on the strength of its global reach, secure M2M network, private cloud, and its 140 owned data centres. The platform itself focuses on three areas: manufacturing, vehicles, and products.

The company is actively trialling IoT services in all three of these focus areas, including health monitoring of staff at a major construction company and an airline, and gathering data from connected factory equipment for a factory automation specialist. It is also a technology partner for the McLaren Formula One team.

The combination of capability and real-world examples made for a strong entry that found favour with the ACA judges. “In terms of sheer scope, NTT Communications is the Connected Asia leader,” declared one member of the panel. Meanwhile, another judge praised NTT for looking beyond connected ‘things’ to connected people: “It’s about enabling the connection between things and human beings.”

Telkomtelstra’s Delivery Robots (Dbots) represents a new approach to service delivery. By using software to replicate human interaction with network devices, Dbots carries out device staging, testing and configuration for managed network services customers.

With Dbots, thousands of devices can be automatically staged, tested and configured, reducing human error, and creating an agile service delivery process that improves cost and time efficiency. The solution has been shown to reduce the time to activate customer premises equipment (CPE) by 83%.

These impressive capabilities made Telkomtelstra stand out in what was a very competitive category. “Very innovative and seemingly unique in the industry,” said one member of the panel. “What differentiates Dbots from other innovative offerings is its ability to achieve fast and agile delivery,” said another.

India has a mobile gender gap. 28% of women own a mobile phone compared to 43% of men. 33% of Indian women identify harassment from strangers as a barrier to mobile adoption and usage.

Private Recharge addresses this issue by enabling Idea Cellular’s female customers to top up their prepaid credit without revealing their mobile phone number. Powered by Mahindra Comviva’s PreTUPS solution, it instead shares an alias number with the retailer. It has proved popular, with 4,000 Private Recharges carried out within two months of launch.

While there were many worthy entries in this category, the elegance of Mahindra Comviva’s solution won over the judges. Private Recharge “is so pragmatic, so effective, and so easy to implement. It decreases harassment, and increases independence for women. This should become a world initiative,” said one judge.

Singtel Satellite pulled off that rarest of feats at the Asia Communication Awards: winning a category two years running. It achieved this by submitting an entry that convinced the judges that it has continued to innovate over the past 12 months, adding new capabilities that meet the evolving needs of its customers.

This year, the judges were impressed by Singtel Satellite’s work on improving cyber security, and working with partners to tailor solutions for its diverse customer base, particularly those in emerging markets and those in the maritime sector.

The combination of continued innovation, glowing testimonials, partnerships, and sheer scale, made Singtel Satellite a firm favourite in this category. Huawei made a strong case for why it deserved to win Vendor Initiative of the Year, submitting two case studies that demonstrate how its cloud services portfolio is helping real-world customers develop new services and business models. For telcos, migrating to the cloud is imperative in order to tap new revenue streams that offset the decline in traditional services, and to drive efficiencies right across the business.

Huawei’s entry showed how its cloud solutions helped one operator achieve a 30% reduction in operating expenses, and a 40% reduction in capital expenditure, while rolling out a new converged billing system.

Customer proof points tipped the scales firmly in Huawei’s favour, with one judge impressed by the company’s commitment to investing in technology innovation, “which is a prerequisite to becoming the vendor of choice.”

Evidence of innovation is high on the judges’ agenda for this category, and NTT Communications certainly delivered; its entry showed that it has been busy using the latest network technology to further extend its global reach and to keep up with customers’ exponentially-growing demand for IP transit.

NTT Communications also reeled off an impressive list of customer wins and renewals, including retail telecom service providers and multinational companies. The entry also came with three very convincing testimonials from happy customers.

This category is one of the most fiercely-contested at the Asia Communication Awards, so it is particularly impressive that NTT Communications has emerged victorious for the second year in a row. One judge said the company showed an “excellent approach to global engagement, which is the mark of a good operator”

These days, more and more and telcos are moving beyond providing basic connectivity services, and instead are re-positioning themselves as a digital life partner for their customers. The Digital Service Provider of the Year award recognises those players that can demonstrate they are championing this new way of thinking.

Smart Communications stood out in this category by demonstrating that it is undergoing the technical, operational, and cultural transformation that is necessary if telcos are truly going to succeed in this new, digital age. It is a transformation that is delivering results too, with Smart showing how its strategy has driven strong growth in smartphone uptake and mobile data revenue.

“A clearly-articulated digital strategy that positions Smart Communications as more than just a connectivity provider,” said one member of the judging panel.

NTT Communications impressed the judging panel with an entry that highlighted its impressive global reach and the investments it has made in network capacity, service innovation, and cloud infrastructure. These investments are clearly paying off, with NTT Communications recording consolidated revenue growth for three consecutive years, which is to be commended in such a highly-competitive industry.

NTT Communications’ strategy is also finding favour with its ever-expanding customer base: its submission included a who’s who of multinational companies it signed up during the entry period.

The judges were full of praise for the winner. “Many telcos have tried to transform their business and have ended up going backwards. NTT Communications on the other hand is inching its way into the new digital world,” said one judge.

Total Telecom asked its readers to vote for their top Asian telecoms CEO from a shortlist of candidates, noting that their preferred choice should be the CEO who they believe exemplifies the broad range of characteristics needed to be a successful leader in this industry. Readers voted in their thousands and Globe Telecom’s Ernest Cu emerged victorious.

Ernest Cu was appointed president and CEO of Globe in April 2009. Since then, he has been driving a sweeping transformation of the company, including modernising its network and IT infrastructure, creating a collaborative and service-oriented culture, and fostering product innovation in its mobile business. More recently, Cu has overseen the rapid deployment of Globe’s 700-MHz spectrum, which is helping to deliver faster and broader mobile Internet coverage. Globe Telecom has also been busy investing in fixed-line broadband in an effort to connect 2 million households nationwide by 2020.
