TOP 10 THINGS I LEARNED IN PUBS…Ally Kupcewicz
10. SEGMENT YOUR PUBLICSIn PR Pubs this
semester we did a group project on segmenting publics. Our designated public was gender. I never realized how important it was to learn about your target audience and make sure that you are designing your ad so it will be understandable to them.
9. TYPOGRAPHY IS KEY!Picking fonts, colors,
sizes etc is essential to creating a great brochure, ad, flyer, letterhead and more. And there is more to typography than a font and a color. It is about HOW and WHERE you use these specific things.
8. LOGOS LAST A LIFETIMEIt is important that
when designing a logo, you make sure it contains 4 things: the business it is representing, a purpose, the products or services it supplies, and the use of PR tactics throughout.
7. WHITE SPACE, USE IT!You may think
that the use of white space is boring but really it is key. Too many words or colors can confuse readers and defeat the purpose of getting your point across to them.
6. LEARN TO TWEET.Last Spring I signed up
for my first twitter account. Although I thought the concept weird at the time, I know now that it is crucial in the PR world to be up to date on everything going on. Twitter allows you to do this, but the only way to stay in with what's going on is to TWEET as much as you can.
5. INDESIGN WILL KILL YOUAfter dealing with
Adobe InDesign this semester to create my brochure, I quickly learned that it was anything but easy. The program was extremely difficult to use and to be honest I think that they need to come up with a better program for designing publications.
4. CRAP, CRAP, CRAP
Contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity. This theory is a book in the PR bible.
3. ALL ABOUT THE EAGLE PRINT SHOPWe got to take a
tour of the Eagle Print Shop this semester. It was great because I really had no idea how much you could do through the print shop. I use it ALL THE TIME now!
2. GROUPS ARE IMPORTANTThis semester I
learned that working in groups is essential in the work world. We are so used to doing everything on our own in college that we forget that once we get into the real world, about 90% of our work will be group related.
1. DON’T PROCRASTINATE!This is
something that I learned not only in PUBS but in all of my classes this semester. It pays to finish things early, your work will be better quality and you will be A LOT less stressed.
