TOP 10 biggest football stadiums in Europe Part one 10-6

The coming weekend holds very few interesting matches, so i

thought i’d start a new TOP 10 segment. Starting with TOP 10

Biggest football stadiums in Europe.

TOP 10 biggest football stadiums in Europe. Going through different aspects, such as: Capacity,

who plays their matches in the stadium, what/if any important matches/events has taken place in the

stadium etcetera. Going upwards starting from the number 10.

TOP 10 biggest football stadiums in Europe: Number 10

Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany

Allianz Arena, home of Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich, occasionally also home for the German

national team. One of the most beautiful stadiums in Europe. The outside is made entirely out of

some sort of plastic panels, which gives the ability to fully change the colour of the exterior. The

name Allianz Arena, cant be used in EUFA or FIFA competitions, therefore its just called Football

Arena Munich in UCL and other UEFA/FIFA events. The stadium capacity of Allianz Arena is

75000 which ranks in at number 10 of the TOP 10 biggest football stadiums in Europe.

The construction of Allianz Arena started in 2002, and it was finalized in 2005 making it one of the

most modern stadiums in Europe(already the first look tells you that much, it looks weird, in a good

way!). The changing colours are simply awesome. When Bayern plays its red, when 1860 Munich

plays its blue and when German National team plays the stadium glows white.

Despite the stadium being new-ish, it has hosted many big events, such as the 2006 world cup semi-

final between Portugal and France. And the 2012 Champions League final between Chelsea and

Bayern Munich. Bayern Munich had the chance to become first ever team in UCL to win the

Champions League at their home stadium. But, we all know how that turned out don’t we…

Chelsea eventually won the Champions League on Allianz Arena. Wasnt the most interesting ever

UCL final that’s for sure, but it had drama and all that other good stuff.

TOP 10 Biggest football stadiums in Europe: Number 9

Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England.

Old Trafford is a majestic Stadium. Also known as the “Theater of Dreams”. One of the most iconic

stadiums in the world. The largest CLUB football stadium in england. Wembley stadium has

bigger capacity, but Wembley is not a home for any club(except it was/is for Spurs in European

competitions). The capacity of Old Trafford is 75635, making it the overall 9th biggest football

stadium in Europe. Old Trafford was established in 1910, making it one of the oldest stadium in

Europe. Sure there are older, but they aren’t as big. Such as Celtic park, Anfield and St. James’ Park

of which all are decent sized stadiums, but nowhere near the TOP 10. Funny fact about Old

Trafford, is that the record attendance on the stadium, was to a match when Manchester United was

NOT involved. That record is 76692 spectators, watching FA Cup semi-final between

Wolverhampton and Grimsby Town.

Old Trafford has hosted many great events throughout its rich history, such as: World Cup 1966

matches, Euro 96 matches and an Champions League final in 2003 between Juventus and Milan.

Which AC Milan won after a penalty shootout.

TOP 10 biggest football stadiums in Europe: Number 8

Ataturk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul, Turkey

Home of the Turkish national team, but teams like Galatasaray, Besiktas and Istanbul BB have also

used the stadium as their home ground at some point. Ataturk Olympic Stadium has capacity of

76092. Making it the 8th biggest football stadium in Europe. The stadium is named after the first

president of Turkey: Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

The Ataturk stadium was built in 2002, the construction started in 1999. It cost somewhere around

$140million at the time, you could say it was on the cheap end, if you consider how much clubs

have put into their stadiums in recent years. Most notable sporting event taking part in Ataturk

Olympic stadium, would have to be the infamous 2005 champions league final between Liverpool

and AC Milan.

TOP 10 Biggest stadiums in Europe, number 7:

Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow, Russia

Home of the Russian national football team, Luzhniki Stadium has a capacity of 78360. The

stadium used to be named Central Lenin Stadium from when it was built, in 1956 to 1992. Luzhniki

stadium has overseen many big football events. Such as 1999 UEFA Cup final and more famously

the 2008 Champions League final between Manchester United and Chelsea. As well as other

sporting events such as the Summer olympics of 1980, at the time the capacity of Luzhniki(then

known as Central Lenin stadium) was a mind-blowing 103000. Luzhniki Stadium is being

TOP 10 Football stadiums in Europe, number 6:

Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain

There are not many football following people in the world, who doesn’t know Santiago Bernabeu.

Calling Santiago Bernabeu legendary, would be an understatement. It is as iconic as Old Trafford, if

not more. While it is not the biggest stadium in the world, it might be one of the most well-known

football sanctuary’s in the world. Home of Real Madrid, the most successful football club in

Europe(and while at it, the world). Capacity of Santiago Bernabeu is 81044, making it the 6th

biggest stadium in Europe. Santiago Bernabeu is a host to the 2nd biggest single football match in

the world on yearly basis(only behind UEFA Champions League final). That football match being

El Clasico, Real Madrid vs Barcelona, of which practically the whole football viewing world stops

to watch.

Santiago Bernabeu was built in 1947, at the time it was called Nuevo Estadio Chamartin(New

Chamartin Stadium). The original name comes from the district of Madrid the stadium is located at,

Chamartin. At the time the capacity of the stadium was little over 75000. In 1955 the capacity had

increased to 125000, and was the biggest football stadium in Europe(now that is a frightening

number, considering the building technique’s at the time). In 1955 the name of the stadium was

changed to Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, to honor the current club president and former player,

Santiago Bernabeu.

Santiago Bernabeu has been a host to Champions League Final once, in 2010 when Inter beat

Bayern Munich in the final. Santiago Bernabeu has also hosted the final of the previous version of

Champions League, European Cup 3 times: in 1957, 1968 and 1980. The FIFA 1982 World Cup

final was also played on Santiago Bernabeu.

Those are the first 5 of the TOP 10 biggest football stadiums in Europe. I will post the other

5 tomorrow or day after tomorrow, whenever i get the time to do so. This post stretched longer than

i originally intended, so if i posted them all at once, this would be a short book instead of a post…
