The rolling mill is a machine designed toproduce thinner gauges of sheet metaland wire. Most studio jewellers use ahand cranked mill (although automatedmills are used as well). Each mill consistsof two smooth, highly polished, hardenedsteel rolls, mounted in the housingparallel to each other. The rolling mill isused for reducing the thickness of sheetmetal. The rolls for wire are cut with 'V'shaped grooves arranged in decreasingsizes, allowing for gradual reduction ofwire diameter and producing a squarecross section of wire. Most studiojewellers choose a “combination” mill -half of the roll is smooth (for sheet metal)and half is grooved (for wire). This limitsthe width of metal to be rolled (averagingabout 2"- 2.5").
